Introduction
Dom Ginn
Few Ferraris divide opinion quite like the Dino 308 GT4, but time has been incredibly kind to Bertone’s wedge-shaped V8 grand tourer and prices have been on the rise.
What was once seen as the outlier in Ferrari’s back catalogue is now appreciated for exactly what it is; a characterful, analogue gated-manual Ferrari with unmistakable 1970s styling and a wonderfully mechanical driving experience.
This 1979 example has been with current owner David since 2020 and presents as an honest, usable classic. Finished in the iconic Red over black leather, it offers the raw and engaging feel that makes these early V8 Ferraris so appealing today.
This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

*** RESERVE LOWERED ***
David has decided to lower the reserve, the highest bidder is now more likely to win the Ferrari on Thursday, good luck!
Thanks,
Colin.
Hi David,
Thank you for the responses (and follow-up), along with the photos highlighting the paint bubbles.
Sorry if I wasn’t clear before, but if you freeze the “on the road” video at 13:43, there appears to be a rust hole on the underside of the car right where the outer wing meets the inner sill structure on the front left-hand side. It looks like a physical perforation rather than dirt. I can’t upload a screenshot through this website, but could you take a closer look at that specific spot underneath and let me know its condition?
HI. I examined the sills this morning and indeed, there is a little hole (much to my chagrin) slightly smaller than a ten P coin. I have sent a photo to the site for posting. It appears to be a concentrated event, as I have now examined the sills and find no other incidence. This appears to be a drainage point and perhaps in washing the car some water came to rest in that little corner and Russian steel did the rest. I have re-lanoguarded the sills and the hole, but the metal around the hole appears to be (and sounds) solid so I think it’s a collecting point.
Thanks for spotting this!
Simply to add, I have not driven it on wet days so the car washing is all I can think that would have gotten water to collect in there.
Hi David,
I’m aware the car is 47 years old, and wear/tear is to be expected, but I have a few questions. Apologies for the number of them, but I am too far away to visit.
ENGINE
Are you aware as to what exactly – a belt/pulley/etc – is causing the squeak/squealing sound when the engine is fired up from cold. It’s very noticeable in the on-road video?
When was the last service? Were there any “need to be repaired” items of note? I can’t see any invoices later than 2023. I see from the invoices that the cam belt was replaced and carbs adjusted in ’23, but the engine appears to be very rough when cold. Is that how it normally idles?
WHEELS
Are the alloy wheels corroded or just scuffed. It’s hard to tell in the photos?
INTERIOR
1. Does the air conditioning work?
2. Is the cut on the left door pocket superficial or all the way through (image 50)?
3. Is the back of the driver seat coming undone (image 91)?
RUST
And lastly, following up on DJT1’s post a couple of days ago re: rust. In the on road video around 13:30m, it appears as though rust has eaten through the front left lower sill (there are what appear to be holes).
In photo 36 and in the video around and 14:17m, it appears there is rust bubbling near the front right wheel arch well/lower sill, as well as a lot of surface rust. Can you please elaborate on the extent of rust around these and any other areas?
Thank you.
Hi
In order:
ENGINE
1. The cam belts squeal until they are warmed up. They have always done this.
2. The last service was by Omicron in May 2023. There have been approximately 600 miles put on the car since then.
The engine is very cold blooded and takes a bit to warm up.
3. WHEELS
There is no scuffing on the wheels. They could do with a refinish as the paint is corroding in spots.
INTERIOR
1. Does the air conditioning work? When it is gassed, the A/C works very well. As it is set up for old gas, and the system was drained when we refurbished the cooling system generally, I have not modified the car to take modern gas as yet.
2. There is a superficial scratch on the left door arm rest, not a cut.
3. Is the back of the driver seat coming undone (image 91)? The screw had worked out a bit. I’ve tightened it back in place
RUST
I have responded to DJT1’s post above with a couple of new photos. There are no holes in the sills. The small bubbles in the front of the left sill have come up and cover about the size of the first joint of my thumb.
There are three small rust bubbles that have arisen around the wheel arch. The car was completely stripped and resprayed circa 2020 when the prior owner recommissioned the car (Full photographic history). I think what you are interpreting as rust is dirt in the wheel well/sill areas.
Addendum. Ive spoken to my mechanic and the squeal is most likely the alternator belt requiring adjustment. I’m arranging to have it adjusted this week.
Hi,
David has send over a few photos of the bubbles, you can find them here:

Thanks,
Colin.
Good evening……could you comment on the bodywork, particularly the rust patch on the front right wing and I believe the front left wing as it wraps around the sill. It’s quite difficult to see in the video. Thank you and regards David
This car looks very nice but concerned about the mileage differences
As stated, when I purchased the car its first speedometer unit had been replaced. Given the MOT records and service book, the replacement must have occurred while the first owner had the car. I have the original odometer, showing 24,011 miles. The current clock reads 15,230. As the MOTs state, the car was virtually in storage fof almost 30 years before being recommissioned. I have no reason to question that 39,241 is the accurate mileage.
Hi,
David has send over a photo of the original clock, you can see it here:
