Introduction

Dom Ginn
Photographer

The Mondial has become a capable and increasingly appreciated Ferrari model, particularly for its practicality and relative affordability within the brand.

Ferraris have always commanded a notable appeal for status, rarity and heritage. The very sight of the prancing horse emblem equates to quality, performance and exclusivity. Uncompromising and often impractical, Ferrari owners tended to overlook such factors, which makes the Mondial a unique model in the Ferrari portfolio. Under the skin, the Mondial was very much the red-blooded definition of a Ferrari sports car, but it introduced a whole new facet to entice new customers. Recognised for its blend of sportiness and usability, accommodating four passengers and comparative affordability, the introduction of the Mondial in 1980 rewarded Ferrari with immediate success and soon became a best seller. Regular updates to include the arrival of the Cabriolet in 1983, followed by more powerful engines, improved cabins, and a revised exterior helped maintain the car's popularity.

Coming to market after ~ 2 years with our vendor this Mondial is fitted with the ~270BHP 3.2-litre V8 engine, smartly presented, the 1987 Cabriolet is finished in "Rosso Corsa" with a beige leather interior and has just ~20,414 miles recorded on the clock. It comes with its owner's wallet and booklet.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Saml the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's very much a Ferrari, but it's also surprisingly practical and easy to manage on the road.

Bought by Sam ~2 years ago, he tells us "This was the car on my bedroom wall as a child along with the 911 Targa." He hasn’t needed to do much to the car, buying it in the condition it stands in today. Its recent MOT and condition will hopefully encourage the next owner to use and enjoy the car.

He has a number of cars, including a more modern Ferrari, and with this car not getting used as much, he has put it up for auction with us.

Sam will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

It has been exceptionally well cared for over the years, which is reflected in the car's excellent body condition.

Wheels and Tyres

The standard Ferrari wheels looked in good condition, with only a few age related marks noticed. The front and rear of the car are fitted with Michelin TRX tyres, with the front showing a spec of 220/50 and 240/40 to the rear - the rears are date coded from 2019. The front tyres have mild sidewall wear, but all show legal tread.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Ferrari and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The exterior is free of panel damage or discernible corrosion. The panel fit is flush to the body with decent panel gaps. All doors open and close with no trouble. The underside looks solid, with no issues spotted in the engine bay, wheel wells or floor pan.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The red paint has a smooth finish and a positive lustre, generally free of swirls. The colour is consistent. We noted a handful of surface blemishes on the paint; there are a few bubbles on the offside front wing and light wear on the rear valance panel. There are also mild surface scuffs on the boot lid, which could polish out. There were a small number of minor marks elsewhere, including a small paint run on the driver's door and mild door edge wear on the passenger side.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass and lights display well, we spotted no issues with their seals. The trim is cleanly mounted with minimal wear. The bumpers are flush to the body.

The soft top is in decent condition, with no significant marks. Unfortunately one of the clips that holds it in place was broken on the day of the visit and was due to the roof not being undone for a while (a known issue with these cars). Sam is in the process of getting the clip fixed.

image

Interior

The cabin has lasted well, the of the era dials are iconic, but arguably the open gated manual shifter is the star of the show.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats present well, perhaps they would benefit from a clean. Creasing was noted on the driver's seat, and there is mild wear on the rear.

The carpets and mats look good, and all were reported to be damp-free.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard, facia and centre console look smart with no outstanding blemishes. The switches are cleanly presented, with decent dials. All are said to work as they should.

The trim, headlining and door cards are in decent order; again, the few surface marks and light wear could be resolved by a good clean and treatment.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The simple 3 spoke Momo steering wheel is in good shape with mild wear on the rim of the wheel, above the expectations of a car of this age.

The manual gated shifter looks great too, the black gear knob a pleasing contrast to the metal gearstick.

image

Mechanics

Known for its engaging driving dynamics and that classic Ferrari V8 sound, the Mondial also offers a civilised ride.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up without any issues, it idles smoothly and is free of unwanted noises. The dashboard lights remain off, and the exhaust doesn’t suggest any problems with the health of the engine. The 3.2L power plant is smartly presented, with decent hoses and ancillaries.

The gearbox operates smoothly, with no clutch issues reported by Sam.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is well dampened and provides a decent level of comfort. It deals with the road without any bangs or unwanted mechanical noises.

The car brakes smoothly and reassuringly, free of squeal or judders.

image

The Drive

The Mondial provides a well-balanced driving experience. The communicative steering and linear responsiveness of the engine offer a genuine Ferrari experience, complete with tubular chassis, open-gated five-speed gear change and a mid-mounted 3.2-litre V8.

The Mondial offered smooth delivery and a civilised ride, and the close stacked gear ratio and addictive ‘click-clack’ gear actions encourage you to press the car to make the engine sing. The long wheelbase is a boon to the handling; it grips the road well, with no unwanted noises from the wheels when cornering. The car feels relaxed when cruising, as the steering remains compliant.

image

Electrics and Other

All the electrics are working to Sam's knowledge. The car retains a full set of Ferrari emblem dust caps.

History and Paperwork

This car comes to market from ~2 year ownership, reading just ~20,414 miles on the clock, it has some early service history and has a fresh MOT, and presents very well.

The Ferrari was first registered in January 1987 by Ferrari's main dealer, Lancaster Garages, in Colchester. It has seven instances of servicing, including a cam belt change at 16,268. It also has receipts for sundry work, including suspension work. It comes with an MOT to July 2026 and has its owner's wallet and handbook. As documented, the odometer was replaced in 1989 at 11,718, the mileage readings of the services were calculated, whereas the MOT were the readings from the clock. The calculated mileage is ~32,132 (sum of ~20,414 current reading, 11,718 from the old clock).

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Given that the car was registered 20/01/1987
The cars just falls outside of Historic Status for April 2027
Do you have anything in the paperwork that would support a 1986 build date ( requirement for the DVLA if Historic status was to run from April 27rather than April 2028)

Thank you, that gives me a bit of reassurance.

Hi Sam, when was the last engine service carried out? And given the cam belt is advised to be changed every 3 years, do you know when this was last changed? Thanks Adam.
