Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

The Ferrari California is an elegant grand tourer flawlessly balancing raw supercar theatre with exclusive luxury.

Founded by Enzo Ferrari in 1939, Maranello’s iconic brand evolved from pure racing pedigree into the world’s ultimate supercar dynasty. Channelling the status, style, and exclusivity of the legendary 1957 250 GT California Spyder, the Type F149 completely rewrote the Ferrari rulebook by introducing several ground-breaking engineering firsts for a production road car.

It marked a series of historic milestones for the brand, debuting Ferrari’s first front-mounted, direct-injection V8 engine, their first 7-speed dual-clutch transmission for seamless gear shifts, a pioneering multi-link rear suspension, and their first retractable hardtop roof that transforms from a sleek coupe to an open-top spider in just 14 seconds.

Offering a thrilling yet accessible ride, the Ferrari California pairs a roaring, 453-horsepower naturally aspirated V8 with a dynamic adaptive suspension that guarantees exceptional comfort, whether you are driving it as a polished coupe or an open-top convertible.

Representing the pinnacle of Ferrari prowess with effortless, long-distance luxury, this exceptionally well-presented 2009 Ferrari California F1 comes from over 3 years with our vendor, it is finished in iconic 'Rosso Scuderia' over a Crema leather interior with optional carbon fibre fittings. It comes complete with its original owner's pack, two sets of keys, an MOT valid until July 2026, and a meticulous maintenance record boasting 10 service stamps, with the most recent completed in June 2025, having covered only approximately 28,043 miles from new.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Adrian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A lovely car; it’s got soul and I love driving it.

With a history of owning Porsche 911s, Adrian actively sought out a Ferrari California in search of a more exclusive and emotional driving experience. He and his son almost settled on a different car at Meridien Modena Ferrari in Lyndhurst, until his son wisely noted, 'If you're going to get one, it has to be red.'

By a stroke of good fortune, this exact car belonged to a friend who was willing to sell it to Adrian. The optional carbon fibre trim and striking cream interior combination completely clinched the deal.

Always garaged during his three years of ownership, Adrian has enjoyed the car on a regular basis, predominantly on longer journeys. However, feeling that such a machine deserves to be driven even more, he has made the difficult decision to sell.

Adrian will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below, however he is away until the 27th so cannot facilitate any viewings.

Exterior

Stunning 'Rosso Scuderia' bodywork, a superb lustre, and flawless lines define this beautiful California.

Wheels and Tyres

The 20-inch alloys present positively, showing only minor, age-related marks that do not detract from their overall appearance.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Pirelli P-Zero tyres, with the front showing a spec of 245/30 and 285/50 to the rear, these are Ferrari optional tyre fittings. The fronts are date-coded from 2022 and the rears from 2020. The outside walls look in good shape with plenty of legal tread.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

Externally, the car is in exceptional condition; there is absolutely no panel damage, and the bodywork boasts a flush, factory-perfect fit with beautifully consistent shut lines.

The underside presents positively, showing nothing more than minor, light scuffs on the front tray. The wheel wells, suspension mounts, jacking points, and engine bay are all remarkably clean.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The 'Rosso Scuderia' paintwork is free of any significant marks, radiating an exceptional lustre with a deeply consistent hue and almost no suggestions of road wear.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen shows only a handful of minor marks, along with a small area of lamination damage noted at the very bottom on the driver's side. The remaining glass is in excellent condition, with all windows displaying good, healthy seals. The lights and lenses show no signs of ageing and present beautifully.

Furthermore, the trim is completely free of issues, with all detailing securely mounted and presenting very positively. The bumpers fit perfectly flush to the body and are completely free of marks. The car also features the highly desirable, optional carbon fibre rear moulding trim.

image

Interior

Finished in Crema leather and with near-faultless trim, the cabin creates an elegant cabin, perfectly accented by carbon fibre details.

Seats and Carpets

The Crema leather seats with red piping are in exceptional condition, showing nothing more than light, age-related creasing on the driver's side bolster.

The carpets are clean, free of any marks, and bone dry.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard, optional leather central tunnel padding, and centre console are in excellent condition, showing no signs of marks or wear. While the centre console screen has some mild marks and a few of the dashboard buttons exhibit a slight sticky residue, the dials, controls, and switches otherwise present positively and are fully operational.

Additionally, the door cards, headlining, and optional carbon fibre trim are in excellent order, while the luggage compartment trim shows minimal signs of use.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The half-carbon-fibre and leather steering wheel looks good, and the paddle shifters are in good shape.

image

Mechanics

As Ferrari's first front-engined V8 and its first dual-clutch transmission, it introduced a revolutionary level of refinement to the grand touring segment.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up instantly, completely free of any unwanted vibrations or untoward noises. Every dashboard warning light remained firmly off throughout our visit, and the exhaust produced nothing but the expected cold-start condensation. There were no fluid leaks evident on the day of our visit.

Visually, the engine bay presents beautifully, well above the expectations for a car of this age.

The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission operates flawlessly. Each automatic transition is silky smooth, incredibly responsive, and completely free of any mechanical noise.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The MagneRide dampers absorb road imperfections smoothly, ensuring we did not experience any knocks or thuds at any point during the drive. The ride comfort is exceptionally smooth and even, allowing the car to track straight and true. For added peace of mind, a rear shock absorber and bush were replaced in 2023.

The car delivers highly effective braking with its carbon ceramics, completely free of any unwanted feedback or noise throughout the drive out. It also features the striking and desirable optional 'Rosso Scuderia' brake callipers.

image

The Drive

At the very core of the California’s appeal is its magnificent, naturally aspirated 4.3-litre V8 engine, a masterpiece of Italian engineering. Producing 453 brake horsepower, this powerplant was a historic milestone for Ferrari, introducing direct fuel injection for greater efficiency and sharper throttle response without sacrificing any of the brand’s signature drama.

As the journey began, the car proved incredibly docile, smooth, and well-behaved through the 30 mph zones. The engine settled into a deep, muscular growl at low revs, warming up flawlessly. Adrian was extremely satisfied with the steering, noting that it performed without fault. Wisely, he did not fully open up the car due to road restrictions, but the briefest acceleration teased an instantaneous, seamless power delivery and demonstrated lightning-fast gear changes.

Driven in Comfort mode, the suspension was highly effective at smoothing out road imperfections and rougher surfaces, proving how perfectly suited the car is for both long motorway cruises and city driving. This refinement was further highlighted with the roof up, which delivered a completely rattle-free driving experience.

Adrian has encountered no issues whatsoever regarding the car's reliability. Helped by regular servicing, the engine runs perfectly with absolutely no concerns surrounding oil pressure or operating temperature.

image

Electrics and Other

Adrian told us all electrical functions in the car worked as far as he was aware.

The aluminum hardtop roof folding mechanism is completely fault free, operating without any delay, strain, or unwanted mechanical noise. Additionally, the Advanced Frontlighting System functions exactly as it should.

History and Paperwork

The car has been very well maintained with ten service stamps, extensive invoices, and official Ferrari extras.

First registered by Graypaul Nottingham in December 2009, this Ferrari boasts an impressive maintenance history with 10 service stamps - all but one from official Ferrari main dealers. Throughout Adrian’s three-year ownership, the car has been serviced annually at Meridien Modena Ferrari in Lyndhurst.

It is accompanied by a comprehensive history folder filled with service invoices, including receipts for sundry items and a new rear shock absorber and bush fitted in 2023. Also included is the original owner’s wallet containing a full set of booklets, alongside premium extras: an indoor dust cover, steering wheel jacket, seat covers, the original Ferrari battery charger, and a wind deflector.

The car comes complete with two sets of keys, was last serviced in June 2025, and holds an MOT valid until July 2026. Please note that the retention of the cherished registration plate will be determined by the final auction price.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
