Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

One of the truly great icons of the 90s era of hot saloons.

The Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth follows on from its motorsport-bred predecessor. It retained much of the same overall feel, but subtly tweaked the handling traits of the original. Packaged in a more practical, stiffer, and manageable car, the Sierra Sapphire was rolled out in 1988 with well-weighted steering and an excellent balance of agility and stability. The Sierra Sapphire makes for a genuinely engaging drive.

What a lovely example: a 1991 Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4, which received a body restoration by a previous keeper prior to it being given away in an online competition by Redline Competitions. The competition was won by our vendor, Mark, who has now owned the car for a couple of years. It comes with a current MOT, valid until 10th October 2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Mark the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

“It’s been great fun to own… it still amazes me that I even won it to begin with.”

One Friday night two years ago, Mark decided to purchase a ticket from Redline Competitions to win a Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4. Can you imagine the shock when the phone rang late one night, telling him that he had won it?

Mark was soon the proud owner of this stunning 1991 Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4. A dream come true for someone who had always been in awe of the Cosworth as a young petrolhead growing up in the 90s.

A couple of years of owning the Cosworth has been tremendous fun, but Mark has realised he’s not really getting the full use out of it. He now wants to let another Ford RS enthusiast have the pleasure of driving this 90s icon.

Exterior

The 4x4 Cosworth featured subtle styling differences compared to the two-wheel-drive Sapphire.

Wheels and Tyres

It's fitted with a set of 18” Compomotive TH wheels, which are in superb condition with no damage or corrosion to point out. They suit the Sapphire Cosworth perfectly.

The tyres are a matching set of Davanti tyres, which haven't covered many miles at all and therefore have plenty of tread remaining.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

Prior to the car being given away, it had received a body restoration. The panel gaps appear to align as you would expect, and there are no dings or dents to point out.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourself.

image

Paint

Finished in 'Flint Grey', the paintwork presents very well, with a highly reflective finish. No chips or scratches were noted when we visited the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

All of the windows appear to be in excellent condition, with no noticeable scratches. The seals are generally very good, with no real signs of age.

The headlights, indicators, and fog lights are free from damage to the lenses. At the rear, a set of factory smoked rear lights are in good condition.

There is a very tiny amount of crazing around one of the mounting holes for the rear spoiler, but this is minimal.

image

Interior

Recaros! What more needs to be said? It’s standard seating for any fast Ford, and what a pleasure to sit in.

Seats and Carpets

The Recaro seats in the front are in really good condition. There is a tiny amount of age showing on the driver’s bolster, and the base fabric has stretched slightly which, when you consider they're approaching 40, means they have aged exceptionally well. The rear seat is also in excellent condition, as are all four door cards.

Throughout the car, the carpets are in good order, with no signs of excessive wear.

Inside the boot, the original lattice spare wheel is in place along with the factory jack.

image

Dashboard

A true survivor… the dashboard on the Sierra isn’t cracked or split, which is nice to see. There is a small amount of distortion to the passenger-side storage trim, but nothing excessive.

The instruments are working correctly, with no warning lights displayed. The odometer showed a reading of ~98,716 miles at the time of our visit.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original steering wheel and gear knob, which are both in good condition, showing no real signs of age.

image

Mechanics

Cosworth nailed it when they launched the 2.0-litre 16-valve with the added Garrett T3 turbocharger.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.0-litre 16-valve red top engine fired up nicely and came up to temperature as you would expect. It runs smoothly, with no issues reported by Mark.

The five-speed MT75 manual gearbox has a smooth change, and the Cosworth pulls strongly through the gears.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the Cosworth is a great car to be in, with no knocks or bangs coming from the suspension, which has been upgraded at some point with a set of adjustable Koni dampers.

With disc brakes fitted all around, the car stops quickly and effectively - in a straight line, with no juddering through the pedal.

image

The Drive

Capturing the golden era of fast Fords, the Sapphire Cosworth offers a fantastic driving experience. The turbocharged punch delivers a relentless surge of boost, while the 4x4 system claws at the road, giving tremendous confidence when accelerating hard out of bends.

The raw, mechanical feel through the steering and pedals, which isn’t replicated in modern cars, is simply fantastic: especially when paired with that unmistakable Cosworth soundtrack.

image

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear appears to be in good condition, and no issues have been reported apart from the driver's door lock, which doesn’t operate correctly but has not been investigated.

An upgraded Sony head unit and boot-mounted CD multi-changer are fitted.

Also installed is a tracking system, which is currently active and can be transferred to the new keeper.

image

History and Paperwork

Original handbook, service book, and a compilation of paperwork dating all the way back to the 90s.

The history file for this Cosworth is comprehensive, and dates back several decades - showing regular servicing and parts purchased. Some of the recent invoices, which are probably most relevant, include work which Mark has had carried out. Unfortunately, little is known about the restoration, so you can only go on the condition: but looking at it, you won't be disappointed.

There is a current MOT on the car, which is valid until 10th October 2026.

A well-presented example of one of the last model Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4s, which has been well cared for, particularly over the past couple of years by Mark.

This is a fantastic opportunity to own an iconic fast Ford from the 90s era.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back, and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions, no matter how small, please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction house.

Hello Mark I’m interested in bidding on your car but when auction finishes I’ve still got 18 days of offshore work would it be an issue to pay you a deposit and collect when I’m home?
