Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

A package that combines heart-pounding performance and retro design with a dose of everyday tolerance.

A true American legend, the Mustang brand has retained an allure that has made it one of Ford's most successful and best-loved models. The fifth generation of Mustang was something of a return to form, particularly in relation to the styling, when unveiled in 2005. Referencing styling cues of the original designs, often referred to as Retro-Futurism, the Mustang was bang-up-to-date and benefited from the usual model year upgrades, with a complete body overhaul in 2010.

Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) has established a long and eventful relationship with Carroll Shelby Automobiles, who are famed for their performance enhancements. Structurally tougher to accommodate the extra power, the Shelby GT500 is powered by a hand-built 550 bhp supercharged aluminium 5.4 L DOHC V8 engine. Naturally, it is capable of wiping the smile off many supercar owners' faces, with ~4-second 0-60 mph times well within reach. Aerodynamic enhancements, along with a lighter engine offer an improvement in fuel efficiency, and also add to the GT500's appeal to circumvent the US ‘Gas guzzler tax’.

Imported via a Mustang specialist into the UK directly from the factory in 2012, this car has remained with its original owner and comes with a complete series of service stamps. Finished in black, it has seen several useful upgrades including uprated brakes, a waterless coolant conversion and a bespoke infotainment system. Immaculately finished with just 26,988 miles on the clock, it has an MOT valid until December 2023, two keys and the absolute certainty of turning heads.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Jeremy the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Surprisingly docile to drive, the Shelby is a bit of a pussy cat around town!

Jeremy is familiar with Mustang ownership, having part-exchanged his 2010 model for this Shelby when new. Bought to be used, the majority of the mileage has been covered on long-distance journeys across Europe, with several trips to Spain with the Spanish Mustang club.

Jeremy loves the car's ease of use, with its light clutch and perfect low-speed driving manners, but has also made the most of the car's raw talent in the right environment. He is thinning out his collection, which is the main reason for the sale.

Exterior

Beautifully presented, the subtle but menacing presence of the GT500 is impressive.

Wheels and Tyres

The forged 19-inch alloys are in excellent condition, having been subject to a recent refurb. It has been fitted with 4 Michelin Pilot sport tyres over the past 5 years and all have plenty of even tread.

Bodywork

The car is in near-perfect condition, with no issues noted on the underside or exterior of the car.

The panel work is flush throughout, with no damage, dents or marks to the body. The shut lines are equally thorough and the doors all open without any obstructions.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The car is finished in a glossy back paint, it retains a very good lustre and is free of any marks or scuffs on the most part, however we did spot a minor door edge chip on the driver's side door and a little minor paint imperfection on the boot lid. The car was ordered with the delete stripes option.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Jeremy has pointed out that a tiny stone chip on the windscreen has been treated by Autoglass and it is not flagged on the MOT as an advisory. Otherwise no other issues were noted in regards to the trim, lights, glass or seals.

A reversing camera has been expertly fitted, and to the casual observer looks stock.

Interior

The interior is like new and has a handful of useful upgrades.

Seats and Carpets

In line with a car that has covered fewer than 27,000 miles, the cabin is in lovely condition with no wear or marks noted on the sports bucket seats.

The carpets are intact with excellent Shelby GT500 branded mats.

Dashboard

The dashboard is completely unmarked, with intact switchgear and controls. Jeremy has fitted an Alpine Touchscreen Bluetooth Apple CarPlay headunit and air conditioning is functioning.

The photos may show discrepancies with the digital odometer display, but this is a photographic issue rather than a fault with the actual reading - it displays and reads as expected.

The headlining, door cards and interior trim are unmarked.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The multifunction steering wheel is in excellent condition, with the fetching white cue-ball shift knob in excellent condition too.

Mechanics

The brute force of the engine is perfectly managable when it needs to be, but the temptation to open it up is never far away.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start video did not present any issues, firing up immediately with no warning lights on the dashboard. The car idles smoothly with no undulations or exhaust smoke. The engine is very cleanly presented, with no evidence of fluid leaks noted.

The gearbox is notably light and easy to use and engages gears smoothly, with the clutch offering a decent biting point.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension set-up is set up for a firm ride but is said to be remarkably comfortable on longer journeys. There are no reported issues with unwanted noises from the wheels, dealing with the road surfaces without any reported problems.

The car brakes as expected, with no reports of uneven balance or vibrations through the steering wheel.

The Drive

The Mustang is a true American icon, the Shelby's presence is awe-inspiring with a hint of menace. Its ability goes beyond the muscle car straight-line performance and is proven to hit the bends just as confidently.

Nonetheless, the Mustang is about power, so it is surprising to see how easy the car is to drive. Jeremy demonstrated this, highlighting its slick gearchange and light clutch in urban traffic. The test drive can be seen on the mechanical review video, with a taster of the addictive deep rumble of the V8 engine, without Jeremy applying any excessive effort.

The car is reported to be free of any engine temperature or oil pressure issues. The steering is free of any form of knocks or play.

Electrics and Other

Jeremy has upgraded the entertainment/information system, with an Alpine Touchscreen Bluetooth Apple Play unit. The heating ventilation system has also been upgraded

The car has been fitted with engine oil catch cans and a K&N air filter (the original item is also supplied with the car) upgraded EBC disc brakes/pads and waterless coolant conversion. A reverse-gear-activated rear camera is viewable via the Alpine head unit.

A finishing touch is the front upper and lower grill assemblies made by Zunsport.

History and Paperwork

The Shelby GT500 comes with a flawless record of servicing and maintainance.

Registered new on the 1st of March 2012, via UK Ford Mustang specialist and importer Bill Shepherd, the car was directly ordered via Ford's Special Vehicle Team factory. It comes with its build sheet, certificate of origin and original sales invoice. The car has also been consistently serviced at the same dealer, with regular servicing from the start. All of the upgrades to the car are documented in the invoices.

It has been serviced at Europe's top Mustang specialist, The Mustang Workshop and has also been fitted with a handful of upgrades which can be discovered in the relevant sections. Aside from the 10 Service stamps, the most recent being carried out in March 2023, it also has an MOT to December 2023 and comes with two keys.

The car is currently stored at a secure storage facility in Fleet and comes with an indoor cover.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa.
