Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consignor

The latest iteration of the iconic cult classic, this all black Ford Focus RS packs a punch with impressive performance and sleek appearance.

A car with heritage that requires no introduction, the Ford Focus RS is a cult classic in the world of fast Fords. With its predecessors the Mk1 and Mk2 iterations being hailed for exemplary performance and handling, the Mk3 is no different thanks to a number of modern advancements over previous models. Namely the AWD system used in the Mk3 RS to improve launch capability, cornering stability, and power delivery - an important factor considering the 2.3litre ecoboost engine produces ~350BHP from the factory. Capable of travelling from 0-60 in just 4.7 seconds and topping out at a blistering 165mph, the latest generation Focus RS is no slouch.

This particular example comes to market from the vendor who has owned the car since 2016, and covered just ~28,700 miles in that time. Dressed in all black with factory fitted Alcantara Recaro seats, forged 19” alloy wheels, luxury pack, and Ford's premium Sync 2 DAB radio system, it a lovely specification, and importantly an unmolested example that hasn't been "chipped/boosted/mapped" etc. Presented in beautiful condition and a solid service history pack, we think this car will appeal to collectors and enthusiasts alike.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Steve the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I have had my share of Fast Fords, every road test review said this car was brilliant so I knew I had to have one.

Having always been a fan of the "Fast Fords" and having previously owned a Mk2, Steve was immediately interested in the Mk3 Focus RS and knew that it would be on his docket soon enough. He made the purchase of this MK3 Focus RS from the dealership with delivery miles back in 2016, they had pre-registered it already but he was keen to acquire the car without having to wait. Since then he has added a modest ~28,700 miles on the clock and had the car maintained regularly, by the Ford main dealer for the in warranty services, and then by local independent specialists.

The car is unaltered and comes well spec’d from the factory with Luxury Pack, Recaro seats etc. Steve is now looking to sell the RS, slimming down his ~26 vehicle collection to make space for some cars that are returning to him post restoration. Any questions about the car can be directed to Steve in the comments section below.

Exterior

The typically aggressive styling of the RS model range has not been forgotten with the Mk3, a wide set grill, chunky rear spoiler, and wide set rear exhaust pipes pay homage to the styling cues of the previous Focus RS.

Wheels and Tyres

The 19” forged alloy wheels are painted matt black, matching the all-black colour scheme of the car. The wheels look to be in ok condition overall, with only some minor curb marks to two of the wheels, but otherwise they appear to be free of any imperfections.

The car is fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, arguably one of the best tyres money can buy and certainly a good investment for a car of this caliber. The tyres are free from any damage any have a good amount of treat left across the board.

Bodywork

The bodywork is all in good condition, we did not spot any knocks or dents on the day and all body lines look to be in good order too. Steve tells us the car has never had any repair work and that the bodywork is as it was when it left the factory.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Painted in the Ford colour of "Shadow Black", the car looks exceptional in the sunlight, with minimal swirling present and overall a very good level of gloss. The paintwork is free from any major defects too, with no scratches or scuffs that we could see during our time with the car. There are less than a handful of very minor stone chips on the front end, the most notable of which are on the front edge of the bonnet.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all in excellent condition and free of any chips, cracks, or scratches, and likewise the trim is all in excellent condition too. Being a garage kept car the exterior plastics and rubber trims have not had prolonged exposure to the elements and are still in factory condition with no colour fading or degradation.

Interior

With Alcantara Recaro bucket seats, leather trimmed and hand stitched steering wheel, the cabin of the Mk3 RS is both driver focused and comfortable.

Seats and Carpets

The Alcantara Recaro seats are half trimmed with leather on the bolsters and headrests and these are in great condition. The drivers side seat bolster does have a spot of wear from getting in and out of the car, common on this style of seat due to height of the seat bolsters, but importantly looks like it could be fixed with the right products. Otherwise the seats and carpets are in excellent condition, with no major wear or tear to any of the fabrics.

Dashboard

The dashboard is much in keeping with the rest of the interior, with no major spots of wear to the upper dash, and no damage to any of the switchgear or infotainment system either. The extra gauges on the top of that dash look very sleek, some excellent design work from Ford.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The leather steering wheel is in good condition, with no major wear to be seen anywhere on the hide. Likewise the airbag cover and steering wheel controls are in excellent condition too, free from any blemishes. Much the same story for the gearstick and surrounding area, take a look at the images to see the detail.

Mechanics

Powered by a 2.3L in-line four, the Ford Focus RS produces ~350BHP and 350 lb/ft of torque, propelling the car from 0-60mph in just 4.7 seconds and topping out at a blisteringly quick 165MPH.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.3L ecoboost engine is a change from the previous generations Volvo derived 5 cylinder powerplant, however this new engine produces ~350BHP from factory and is moderately more economical during day to day driving. During our ‘Cold Start’ video you can see the engine start from cold with no issues and likewise during our ‘On The Road’ segment you can see the car perform faultlessly.

The gearbox is a manual 6 speed transmission that provides power to all four wheels, with the AWD system capable of managing power delivery to maximise grip under load and even coming with the fabled “Drift Mode”, allowing for the driver to experience RWD fun in an AWD car.

Suspension and Brakes

The adaptive suspension of the Focus RS is comfortable yet firm, allowing for excellent road handling during spirited driving and still being sedate enough to handle day to day driving with ease.

The four pot Brembo callipers are more than capable of stopping the car quickly and efficiently and these did not seem to have any issues on the day, with no grinding or squealing to be heard from any of the four corners.

The Drive

With the heritage of the RS line of fast Ford hatchbacks behind it the Mk3 Focus RS does not disappoint, offering superb road handling, excellent power delivery, and near-unlimited traction from its AWD system, there is little not to love about the MK3 RS. Be it back roads or a daily commute the RS is definitely up to the task, with the flexibility to be a weekend driven track car and a daily driver all in one neat and rather attractive package.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the car we noticed no electrical faults, with all lights in fully working order and all interior systems and switchgear showing no signs of fault either. This generation of cars had a recall on the head gasket, this has been actioned on this car in the past.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~7 year ownership, a solid servicing history, desirable specification and only ~28,700 miles on the clock, this Mk3 Focus RS should attract enthusiasts and collectors alike.

The car comes with full service history, with all warranty services completed by Ford and then subsequent oil changes and MOT’s carried out by local independents. Steve tells us the car has never been "chipped/boosted/mapped", and is still in the factory stock guise as when he bought it. He has owned this car from 2016, making it effectively a "one owner car", however there are 2 former keepers registered with the DVLA; the first was a pre-registered owner by the dealership who never took delivery of the car, the second was Steve's company that he bought it through, before being transferred into his personal ownership in 2021.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
