Created to celebrate Honda’s 50th birthday, the S2000 was created on the criteria of providing driving pleasure and performance. Did it fulfil the brief? It most certainly did. Built on the simplest of recipes, with no gimmicks just a superb 2.0-litre VTEC engine, sweet gearbox and an engaging chassis, the S2000 has placed itself as one of the greats in a Honda portfolio already full to the brim in remarkable engineering feats. Reliable, well made and good-looking, the Honda’s high-revving engine is the main appeal of the car. Work it hard, and you’ll be rewarded.

This S2000 model finished in "Silverstone Silver" with red leather interior is come to market from ~21 years ownership from the original lady owner. That's right, 0 former keepers on this UK AP1 S2000. Bought new by the current owners in 2002, it has only recorded 48,966 miles and comes with a full Honda service history boasting a service from every year since new. Supplied with a Honda hardtop and its storage cradle, the car is sold with a year's MOT and has seen a service carried out in April 2023. This completely stock and solid example is simply in need of some minor visual improvements to complement its water tight mechanical history, and is being run as a "No Reserve" auction.

Meet the owner

The time has come to pass it on to another driver who will appreciate the effortless power.

Owned and registered under Charmaine's name, it was consistently used until her need for a 4-seater car and more recently a problem with her left knee. She tells us that the car in recent years didn’t see much in terms of winter roads, and has been kept under cover while it was on SORN. Such is its dependability, the car would start almost immediately despite a period of hibernation.

Husband Phil often takes the car out for a leisurely blast to clear the cobwebs, but he assured us that he goes easy on it, despite the flexibility and intoxicating aural encouragement of the engine. They've kept the car serviced by Honda as you'll see in the paperwork gallery. Over and above the excellent servicing, major items include a new clutch at ~38,000 miles, and a new convertible roof in 2013. Exterior

Poised and ready to launch, the S2000 is a handsome beast, this one coming to market with the hardtop too.

Wheels and Tyres

Age has caught up with the 16” alloys somewhat but easily repaired by any wheel specialist. With the exception of the off-side front wheel which has some minor scuffs, they are otherwise free of kerb damage.

The car is fitted with a pair of 2018 Bridgestone tyres up front, with some older Avons at the rear which are likely to be over 10 years old. All have legal tread and are free of sidewall damage.

Bodywork

The body too appears to be free of significant corrosion but has a handful of minor but treatable dents which is to be expected on a car of this age. All doors open and close without trouble, panel alignment is good, with the door shuts appear cohesive. The off-side mounting of the front bumper needs a little adjustment. Structurally the car looks positive, with no discernible signs of structural corrosion, other than a very light coat of surface rust noted on the lower sill lips. The floor pan appears to be solid, with no issues noted in the engine bay, boot floor or inner wings.

As mentioned previously, the car received a new convertible hood in 2013. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paintwork, while generally consistent with a more than acceptable lustre in "Silverstone Silver" is in good condition. One thing to mention is the top of the off-side rear wing panel does look a bit faded. It is generally free of significant paint chips, asides from one on the leading edge of the bonnet.

There are a few minor scuffs noted on the bumpers and a shallow mark on the off-side front arch which seems to only affect the clear coat. Some relatively low-level cosmetic applications to the paint could transform the appearance of the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals all appear to be in good shape, with no significant damage.

The trim is well mounted with no real signs of age, although the surface hazing on the headlamp covers should be a candidate for a refurb. The rear lenses are in good shape.

Interior

A snug and inviting cabin is finished with red leather and a gimmick-free dashboard.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are decent with just the driver's seat showing bolster wear, but both are free from rips. The red leather throughout the cabin is a fitting choice to contrast the exterior and match the cars sporting credentials.

The driver's footwell carpet area has a small tear which otherwise distracts from a tidy-looking cabin. The carpets in the cabin and the boot were dry on the day.

Dashboard

The dashboard is free from cracks or marks, with some minor scuffs noted on the lower plastics. The leather facia and centre console have aged well, with no significant wear noted on the switchgear.

All of the controls, including the heating and air conditioning are said to operate. The digital dashboard is fully operational, and still looks good today, with its lo-fi visuals being part of its engaging driving experience.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever are above the expectation of a car of this age and still display well.

Mechanics

An impressively flexible engine and exciting chassis set-up is only bettered by its splendid soundtrack.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine, asides from a little paint erosion on the block, displays well, with decent hoses and ancillaries. It has a annual servicing record with the Honda main dealer, and the cold start process didn’t flag up any issues at all. The engine sounded tight on tick-over, with no observations of fluid leaks on the day.

The gearbox is said to perform without drama, engaging gears without defects.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension set-up is typically firm, but its dampers absorbed the road well, with no creaks noted as the car cornered.

The brakes are effective, with no fade or juddering. The steering wheel remained vibration free at all speeds, with no unwanted noises on full lock.

The Drive

The superb ultra-high-revving 2.0-litre VTEC power plant is undoubtedly the reason why this car is recognised as one of Honda’s best cars. The ergonomically considered driving position, mated up to an eager chassis and near-perfect gear change really helps to engage the driver, yet its amity to act docile around town is another Honda attribute that presents the S2000 as an ideal all-rounder.

Keeping the car in third, as Phil hit 6000 revs, the VTEC was transformed as it retained its composure and remained tight and responsive. A truly involving experience, in which you'd genuinely enjoy working the engine, as the car's sharp steering and natural propensity for grip take care of the road holding.

Electrics and Other

The soft top was replaced by Car Hood Warehouse 10 years ago and is free of rips, although there are minor signs of outside elements in places. The soft top mechanism raises and lowers without any strain on the motors.

The car also comes with the desirable hardtop, which also comes with its cradle storage. The hardtop is free of damage and is said to fit the car well.

History and Paperwork

It has 21 service invoices, one for every year of its 21 years and has been carried out by the same Honda dealer, 1 lady owner from new, modest mileage, this AP1 S2000 is quite a catch we think.

Bought new from Horizon Honda Motors in Poole in 2002, the car comes to market from the original owner Charmaine, 0 former keepers.

The car comes with its original PDI check, and its original sales brochure, along with a stack of invoices and receipts, with evidence that the car has been regularly serviced by the same Honda Main dealer since new. It has 21 service invoices, one for every year of its 21 years, the most recent one being carried out in the first week of April 2023. Its MOTs have also appeared to have been carried out by Honda at the same time as its servicing, who have also provided health checks on the car.

Non-service work on the car in the last 5 years is limited to just a new front caliper and repairs to its after-market alarm/tracker system. Prior to this, attention to the central locking door lock assembly, a new hood (2013) and a new clutch (2012) along with the usual tyres and brake disc/pad renewals. The car comes with two keys and has a year's MOT.

Is there any rust?

I am not aware of any rust on the bodywork. As noted in the auction write-up, age has caught up with the wheels, and there is some corrosion showing on the wheels (please see photos). At the recent MOT/service the garage noted some “suspension and brake component corrosion” (primarily due to the car having been off the road for the winter and only driven to the garage since being stored for the winter), but nothing else.
