Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Iconic in every way possible – British, sporty, stylish and luxurious.

Created for the new age of long-distance motorway cruising, with the potential to traverse the continent in comfort and space, the Mk2 Jaguar established the company as one of the world's foremost manufacturers of sporting family cars.

Introduced in 1959, the Mk2 was an elegant evolution of the original models. It employed the advanced XK series of engines, which went on to power the E-Type. It soon established itself as something of an "everyman’s car", with its race-track provenance continuing to enhance Jaguar's reputation as a producer of finely tuned, sporty cars.

The 3.4-litre, with twin SU HD6 carburettors and manual gearboxes (with overdrive), is often considered one of the more sought-after Mk2 versions. Producing a useful ~210bhp - these finely balanced cars still feel genuinely quick to drive.

Coming from just over ~35 years ownership with our vendor, it is being brought out from a five-year hibernation.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Brian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Jaguar has been part of the family for over 35 years.

Purchased in 1990, Brian and his wife have always been fans of the Mk2 Jaguar; in fact, it was his wife who was more eager to take the car out, often heading to a local pub on a sunny afternoon for a spot of lunch. Brian told us; "Who didn’t want to drive a Mk2 Jag like Inspector Morse? The growl of the 3.4L engine, the beauty of the 'Carmen Red' paint, and the exhilaration of putting her into overdrive. We used it for a wedding car for my sister-in-law, and the kids used to love it when I picked them up from school in it."

Brian has always kept the Mk2 garaged, for the past five years the car hasn’t been used an enormous amount and, as a result, has spent the past couple of years in storage. Due to the car being in storage, it is being sold as needing to be recommissioned, as there is a small fuel leak from the carburettors.

Brian told us the car needs to be back on the road, being driven as it was intended to be and is on hand to answer any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

It may be 62 years old, but it’s a timeless classic that always turns heads.

Wheels and Tyres

The steel wheels have been finished in red to match the body and have a chrome hub cap covering the bolts, which have a small amount of tarnishing but nothing excessive.

There is a mix of branded tyres fitted, which all have good tread remaining but are probably of an age where they would need to be replaced.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

Walking around the Jaguar, the bodywork generally appears to be in good condition. There are a couple of corrosion blisters in places, but nothing which has broken through the paint. The panels look to align well, apart from the driver’s door, which does sit a little proud at the bottom.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in 'Carmen Red', the Jaguar was repainted from its original grey colour before Brian took ownership. The paintwork does have some areas of minor microblistering and would benefit from a polish. A few hours of elbow grease and you would be faced with a different-looking Jaguar.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows in the Jaguar have some age-related marks, as you would expect.

All of the chrome surrounds are in good order with just a small amount of tarnishing.

The rubber seals used around the car have perished due to age, but as you probably know, Mk2 Jaguar spares are readily available.

Interior

What’s thought to be the original interior remains in the Mk2.

Seats and Carpets

The cream leather seats are thought to be the originals and do have some patina to them. The leather has split and cracked, but the seats are totally usable and remain comfortable.

The black carpets do show some signs of age, just like the seats, but again, if you wanted to replace these, they are available from a number of Jaguar specialists.

Dashboard

The classic burr walnut dashboard is in great condition, with no splits or cracks noted. The instruments all appear to be in good condition, and the odometer shows a reading of ~4,683 miles at the time of our visit.

Quite a common item to fail is the tachometer; this is working, and Brian tells us it has been replaced.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original twin-spoke steering wheel is in good condition, with just a small amount of age-related wear.

The manual four-speed gearknob is the original and in good order.

Mechanics

The 3.4-litre inline-six is quite possibly the most popular choice for a Mk2 Jaguar, as it offers decent performance and economy.

Engine and Gearbox

The 3.4-litre does need some recommissioning. There is a slight misfire and a fuel leak from the carburettor area, but this hasn’t been investigated. Brian also tells us that a galvanised fuel tank was fitted in 2020, and before the car went into storage, it was running fine.

There is a desirable four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive fitted, and the gear change was said to be smooth the last time it was used, and it pulled well through the gears.

Suspension and Brakes

The car appears to sit as it should, and, like the engine, there were no issues reported before it went into storage. However, as with any recommissioning project, we would recommend an experienced mechanic take a look before it is driven.

The brakes will also need to be overhauled by a qualified mechanic.

Some parts for the steering and brakes were fitted in 2020, but since then, it has been in storage.

The Drive

On the face of it, this is a nice little recommissioning project that looks to be mainly mechanical and cosmetically focused on the interior.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the car appears to be in good condition, along with the instruments.

We only ran the car for a minute to show it running; therefore, nothing has been tested, but Brian told us everything was working correctly the last time the car was driven.

History and Paperwork

The 35 years of ownership have been a pleasure for Brian.

In 2020, the Jaguar received around ~£1,500 worth of parts, which are shown in the Paperwork section, Brian told us due to unforeseen circumstances the work was halted. Since then, the car has covered just a handful of miles before being put into storage due to lack of use.

There are several invoices showing parts purchased, along with a handy workshop manual that will come in useful for whoever takes on the recommissioning project. Brian has always kept the MK2 garaged during his ownership.

It’s certainly a nice little project for the enthusiast or home mechanic to tackle, or even send to your local classic specialist for some light fettling and recommissioning. We look forward to seeing this classic Jaguar hit the road once again.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back, and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions, no matter how small, please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction.
