Introduction

Alan Stuart

An iconic British classic, the Jaguar E-Type is one of the most instantly recognisable vehicles in the world - and we have a very lovely example here that's ready to be used and enjoyed.

Manufactured between 1961 and 1974 the Jaguar E-Type is admired on the world stage, by both those in the know and those that are not, as one of the most iconic cars in motoring history thanks to its gorgeous styling and stellar performance.

This example comes to us having been recommissioned in 2021, following 21 years of dry storage by its previous owners - it comes complete with it's Heritage Certificate and is ready to be used and enjoyed.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Philip the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The sound of the 4.2L straight six is unlike any other - the noise from the engine alone was reason enough for me to buy this car.

Philip bought the car in July of 2021 from a family that had been in ownership of the vehicle since the early '90s, where the car had originally been purchased by the Grandfather. However after falling unwell the car was put into storage in the year 2000 and wasn’t taken out of storage for good until 2021 - Philip purchased it soon after.

Sadly due to limited mobility, Philip is no longer able to drive the car and after lots of thought has decided to sell the vehicle, so that it may see the use it deserves instead of going back into storage.

Exterior

There is little to be said about the exterior of the Jaguar E-Type - arguably one of the most beautiful cars ever made, it needs no introduction.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with wire spoke wheels and these appear to be in good condition inside and out; there are no visible signs of damage to the wheels and very little oxidation present on the chrome finish.

The wheels are fitted with Pirelli P5 tyres which appear to be in good condition, with no obvious signs of degradation to the sidewalls or tread pattern and a good amount of tread left too.

Bodywork

The Jaguar E-Type has arguably some of the nicest bodylines of any car ever made, so we’re glad to report that all the body lines, panel gaps, and door shuts visually appear to be straight and even. The bodywork overall is in good condition and doesn’t present any obvious signs of corrosion around the usual hotspots, nor anywhere else on the shell for that matter.

We apologise as the left side of the bonnet was left opened during the photoshoot, however, you can see the closed gap line in the External Video.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The red paintwork is not original, having been repainted at some point in its past by a previous owner - the colour was originally Sable. Given the relative age of the paintwork it presents in rather good condition overall with no significant stone chips, scratches, or imperfections in the paintwork that we could see.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the vehicle is, as far as current owner Philip knows, original and is in good condition for it - neither windscreen, side windows, or rear glass have any visible chips, cracks, or scratches that would take away from the appearance of the glass and the surrounding trim appears to be in good order too.

The chrome is generally in good condition, there are a few marks / dings that have been highlighted in the images / videos for you to see.

Again, please review all the images and videos to make up your own minds.

Interior

Oozing class, comfort and luxury, the Jaguar E-Type offers a practical 4 seater cabin with plenty of luggage space without sacrificing any of its charm or elegance.

Seats and Carpets

The leather upholstery, which Philip tells us is completely original, is in very good condition for its age with no rips, tears, or excessive points of wear anywhere on the hide. The leather has aged wonderfully and has been broken in over the last half century to provide the interior with an age appropriate patina.

Likewise the carpets are overall in a presentable condition, however the driver's footwell carpet is suffering from signs of wear as you would expect from a car of this age. The rest of the carpet is in good condition though, with no real damage to speak of.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition - the black dash top still looking good for its age.

All appropriate switchgear and dials are present and Philip assures us they are all in working order too.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original wooden steering wheel fits perfectly with the interior of the E-Type, adding just another touch of elegance as we see so many examples opting to change to a later wheel.

The steering wheel itself is in good condition, with no damage to speak of to either the wooden rim or metal spokes.

The automatic gear shifter is in good condition too, showing minimal signs of use for its age, and having no damage to the gear stick surround either.

Mechanics

The 4.2L straight six powering the Jaguar E-Type produces a whopping ~265bhp.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine underwent recommissioning works in 2021 to make the car roadworthy after its long stint in storage. These works included new battery, bracket, and bolts; heavy duty flexi fuel pipes; hose clips; spark plugs; fuel tank and sump washers; various gaskets and washers; fuel tank tube filter; fuel tank sump; fuel pump; filter gauze; fuel filter element; condenser; fuel feed pipe; fuel floats; air filter; oil filter; 3 jets; 3 needles and seats; distributor; lead set; coil; automatic gearbox oil; thermostat and gaskets; fuel inlet filters; antifreeze change and of course an oil change.

During our “On The Road” video you can see the fruits of those labours when the car starts from cold, and goes for a short drive out - during which the car performs faultlessly, starting on the button, and providing ample acceleration under load.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension components seem to be in good condition, with little in the way of discomfort when out on the road, and no obvious knocks, bangs, squeaks or other such noises from any of the four corners - the ride of the car was very comfortable as we noted when in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

Likewise the brakes seem to be in good condition also, with little in the way of untoward noises and no evidence of a reduced braking effort when Philip took us out in the vehicle; the brakes seem to work as they should, not struggling to bring the car to a controlled and efficient stop.

The Drive

As to be expected from a car of this calibre, the drive is quite sublime - be it accelerating through country roads or cruising up the coast the Jaguar E-Type provides a comfortable drive that oozes class and comfort whilst offering respectable performance, even amongst modern traffic.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the car we spotted no obvious faults with any of the electrical systems, having had a new battery as part of its recommissioning in 2021 the car has no faults with power supply, seemingly to the engine or the cabin.

History and Paperwork

Having come to the current owner Philip from over two decades in storage, this example benefits from having been thoroughly recommissioned only last year.

Philip tells us that since the 90s this car has been owned by one family, having spent most of its recent life in storage between 2000 - 2021 and has been thoroughly recommissioned to ensure its roadworthiness at a cost of £1,828.15. Since recommissioning this Series 2 2+2 E-Type has seen only moderate road use.

Please see the engine number in the images (7R 35410-8) - importantly this matches the VIN plate and Heritage Certificate. You'll notice a different number on the V5 - this is an error with the DVLA and the new owner could request a correction if they wanted.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
