Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The Series 3 E-Type 2+2 Jaguar was the ultimate evolution of the iconic model.

While it may have mellowed the road-racer urge of the earlier cars, the Series 3 E-Type 2+2s were supremely smoother and more sophisticated than ever and established the E-Type 2+2 as a practical luxury cruiser. However, Jaguar had one further trick up its sleeve - its now-legendary V12 powerplant.

The 2+2 E-Type models have lived under the shadow of its older sisters, but under the guidance of a rebuilt and well maintained and therefore reliable V12 engine, this 1972 2+2 with a solid chassis and eye-catchingly good body are worthy of attention. This indoor stored example with matching numbers and what appears to have been a top-notch past body restoration is likely to be the smart way to enjoy the E-Type experience.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Steve the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Geared for a better economy and a higher cruising speed for GT trips, it's a joy to drive.

As one would hope for, Steve is a complete petrolhead and has been involved in higher-end sports cars and activities for much of his life. Since retirement, the pleasure and passion have continued and he took on the E-Type as the car to enjoy and use. Having owned the car for 16 years, its lack of recent use is the main reason for the sale.

He'll be happy to answer any questions you have on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The curves and contours still stops people in their tracks, one of the most iconic British classics ever produced.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels are in good condition with a suggestion of light ageing. The spinners are in good condition, with the nearside items showing some light signs of pitting. The Pirelli tyres are over 10 years old but are well within the legal tread and look in good condition.

Please see photos and a video for more details.

Bodywork

The car presents very well, with no significant issues or blemishes noticed. The car has benefitted from indoor storage and as a result has been spared the type of ageing you often see on these cars.

The structure of the car is solid throughout, with no signs of external corrosion, with the floor pan looking solid with some evidence of blemishes in front of the near-side rear wheel.

The engine bay and bulkhead look good too. The doors open and close well, with the panel gaps and fit all looking to be flush and dent free. The bodywork can be seen in the external media pack - please have a look to appreciate the condition of this example.

Paint

The paint finish is very good throughout with deep lustre. Even in colour across the car, what's more eye-catching than a red E-Type!

There are no significant issues of note on the bodywork, other than a small blemish observed on the off-side top of the wing where it meets the chrome trim and the smallest of chips also observed on the outer corner and the inside of the driver door bottom and what appears to be a minor paint crack behind the door handle.

Please have a look at the photos to see the paint in more detail.

Glass and Trim

The glass is good, with nothing of note that will need attention although the windscreen does have a chip repair on the driver's side.

Some of the rubber has aged somewhat, the boot rubber door seal is probably the most obvious sign of car's age. The chrome is good throughout, with some components showing minor signs of light pitting.

We have prepared an extensive gallery of photos and a video showing exterior of the car in great detail. Please have a look.

Interior

In 2+2 form, this Series 3 fixed head coupe offers room for the whole family, a snug cabin wrapped in leather and some practical upgrades.

Seats and Carpets

The owner has carefully stored the original seats and replaced them with modern Rover leather items. The fit and comfort of the newer seats are remarkably cohesive and offer a far more practical and comfortable solution but importantly the originals also come with the sale. They're in good condition with a minor suggestion of wear but are rip free. The rear items are the originals and are in line with the age of the car.

The carpets are in good condition, with no significant issues. There was no evidence of damp inside the car.

Please have a look at the photos and videos to see all items in detail.

Dashboard

The dashboard itself is in good condition and free from facia cracks or wear, strongly suggesting it has been re-covered in the recent past. The controls and dials are in line with the age of the car, with some switches displaying the cars interior originality.

The car is fitted with a modern Sharp FM Radio player. All of the controls are said to be functional, although the owner has pointed out that the speedometer will need recalibrating as it reads at a lower speed than indicated, due to the uprated differential.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear knob show some wear, with a minor patina that suits the general feel and authenticity of the cabin.

Please take time to look through the photos and a video to appreciate the condition of all interior items.

Mechanics

The V12 engine needs no introduction, its refinement and torque is just the tip of its talents

Engine and Gearbox

The engine was subject to a rebuild (pistons, linings etc) just 200 miles ago, and therefore no issues were experienced during the cold start, with the engine running well, with no rumbles or leaks. Please watch the mechanical review video to see the cold start and the engine bay.

The car has seen an uprated higher ratio 2:8 differential, which has not only improved the economy but offers a higher cruising speed. However, Steve also pointed out that the gearbox requires a little adjustment to place it into reverse, with the clutch requiring a sympathetic change. He has assured us that it's a knack and shouldn't be an issue to adapt to. Otherwise, the change is slick and fully functional.

Suspension and Brakes

There are no issues reported with the operation of the running gear, with the components appearing to be in good order, with no binding or suggestions of poor maintenance.

The Drive

The car is reported to drive well, with no problems with the verve and feedback of the engine. There is no clutch slip and the gearbox is not noisy, with the damping and steering as good as to be expected on a car that has seen attention to its mechanics.

Electrics and Other

The door cards are in very good condition. The boot lining is in decent order, with no suggestion of misuse or damage. The headlining is good with no damage. Electrically the car is said to be in good order, with no known issues reported while the car was used.

History and Paperwork

A UK RHD in manual configuration, and with the benefit of this example only having covered ~200 miles since an extensive engine rebuild.

The car has seen three owners over the last 25 years and has roughly remained in the same area. Steve took the car on in 2005 and has kept ahead of any mechanical issues, thanks to a useful and loyal relationship with the garage where the car is stored. The initial work on the car once Steve bought it, included an alternator, battery, water pump, brake servo, tyres and a radiator. A recent engine re-build has given the car a new lease of life with evidence of images available upon request.

I am a bit concerned about the reverse problem could you explain more. Thanks Neil

It’s no problem Neil, it’s a matter of a fine adjustment on the gearstick, to ease the tension of the spring, against the gate which stops you selecting the wrong gear, which I will do for the new buyer if it is sold.
