Introduction

Tom Valle
Professional Consigner

Four-seater practicality with a red-blooded beating heart.

Since the acquisition by Ferrari, Maserati saw a positive move towards establishing a vastly improved aspect to build quality, resulting in Maserati's upward sales fortunes. With such a notable merger, its only natural that there is a certain commonality in parts, most notably engines, but again, this couldn’t be considered a bad thing if you have Ferrari as a parent.

It all started in 1998 with the 3200 GT, now recognised as the first of the modern Maseratis. With the successive 4200 GT being seen as the biggest step to ditch the last connection to the old company, Maserati finally had a product to rival Porsche. The 4.2-litre engine had been developed by Ferrari and Maserati was subject to being first in line to be powered by the new F136 R 390 bhp V8 engine. The car continued to be developed, changing its model name to the Coupe in 2002 following a hefty revamp. Created to comfortably seat four adults in a performance package that would simply obliterate most four-seaters on the market. It's stylish, brutally quick, practical and full red-blooded experience of a Grand Turismo Maserati, without the drawbacks that used to dog the trident badge.

This 2003 example is a very well kept example, having the benefit of a excellent service history and evidence of a cherished life. Finished in the desirable Granito Grey Metallic with a red leather interior, this Cambiocorsa version has just over 65,600 miles on the clock and has only covered 5K over the last 5 years. The gearbox has had its F1 hydraulic pump replaced and its clutch was recorded at having over 80% life left during a recent inspection. It has also been subject to a recent service and MOT.

Meet the owner

I'm a car guy and I just wanted to see what the fuss was all about - I've loved the experience and not disappointed at all!

Deepak follows the common thread that these well-priced performance cars often attract, where people buy them just to experience the driving thrill and expectations of the car. As you can see, Deepak has kept the car in a well-maintained condition ensuring that it has seen a service and MOT prior to dispatch to the new owner. A lack of use and a possible replacement are the only reasons for this sale.

Exterior

The subtle styling hints at something more purposeful lurking beneath.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with its original and gorgeous alloys.

The alloys have seen a little light kerbing, nothing that suggests careless driving though and simply more in line with the age of the car.

The front tyres are by Laufenn, with the rear items both shod with Pirelli Sottozero and show acceptable wear. All appear to be no older than 5 years old.

Bodywork

There are many poor quality 4200s out there with significant bodywork issues and / or bad repairs. However, this car is a step above the rest with just a couple of small issues to point out to keep you fully informed.

It's clear to see that the body has been cared for during it's life, with just a couple of minor dings evident on the doors - an easy repair for a dent specialist. There is a bit of corrosion on the lower section of the off-side rear wing, where it meets the bumper.

The panel gaps are even throughout the car.

Finally, the underside is in good condition and shows no significant scrapes or damage.

Paint

The paint looks really good on this car as you can see from all angles and in all lights in the images and videos. Arguably this is the colour that best suits the car and looks really good against the alloys.

The Granito Grey Metallic paint has a decent even lustre, with no evidence of swirl marks indicating how well cared for this car has been.

Just to note, there is a scratch on the front bumper, but overall the car is free from big chips or scratches, which includes the door edges.

Glass and Trim

No issues with the condition of the glass, the panes are free from chips and cracks.

The only real aspect to note is some wear on the passenger window trim area - a very easy morning Sunday fix, the rest including the chrome badging and other exterior glass trim is really good.

Interior

The hand-finished interior is simply stunning on this example - a sense of occasion on every drive.

Seats and Carpets

The interior has aged well and is reflective of its relatively low miles.

The driver's seat shows expected age-related wear to the bolster and minor wear on the bench in line with the car's history.

All seats are in good condition, with the stitching detail retaining their original finish. The carpets are in good condition. The headlining is good, with no marks or damage.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent condition, with no points that mark it down.

All of the switches, dials and controls are in good condition - as usual on cars of this era, the soft-touch plastics are showing their age, particularly around the key fob and centre console / handbrake areas.

The door cards are in good condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is clean and in good condition.

The paddle shifts controls are in good condition too - all building towards the originality of this well cared for example.

Mechanics

The electrifying acceleration combined with the visual beauty of the engine is a good enough reason to desire this car.

Engine and Gearbox

The crackle-finished aluminium castings of the engine is a joy to look at and the owner has made the effort to maintain its aesthetic appeal. As a result, the engine has been well cleaned and it certainly reflects the inner working of it, with an uneventful cold engine start.

The dashboard engine lights remained off. The engine and exhaust performed well, with no evidence of knocking or nasty noises.

Suspension and Brakes

Following a positive assessment of the engine, the brakes and suspension are all good too. The car has seen rear brake shoe renewal fairly recently. The discs are in good condition.

This car is ready to be driven and enjoyed.

The Drive

It is literally all about the drive. The Maserati's engine combined with the Cambiocorsa's semi-automatic paddle-shift gear change is perfect for the grand tour.

The blistering acceleration and noise from the V8 are simply perfect, but the car likes a corner too. The ride is versatile thanks to the 'Skyhook' telemetry system, with adjustable settings which can be adjusted to suit your driving style.

As we said, it's all about the drive.

Electrics and Other

All of the electrical items are said to be functional, the multi-functional computer, as well as the usual sensors, are said to be fully operational by Deepak.

History and Paperwork

The Maserati comes with a book full of service history stamps, including one carried out just 3,000 miles ago - just buy and go.

The car, as you'd expect has seen a regular amount of servicing proportional to its mileage, with initial servicing carried out by Maserati main dealers, followed by specialist companies right up to date.

Its most recent service was in August 2020, which also saw that the cars handbrake cable, lambda sensor and F1 pump, as well as a pair of rear brake shoes were renewed.

There is also paperwork to confirm that the clutch wear was under 20% in 2019, in which around 4,000 miles have been added since then, strongly suggesting that figure is unlikely to have increased by a significant amount. Deepak also knows how important it is to reduce clutch wear by moving to neutral in traffic - he's a car person that has treated this example well, both in terms of maintenance and driving.

We've carried out checks on; Seller ID, V5, HPi clear.
