The Mercedes Benz 500SL (R107) was one of Mercedes-Benz's longest single series cars produced, 18 years to be precise.

The 5.0L V8 500 SL was a top of the market model which offers great performance, handling and reliability. This was and still is the perfect car to go country-hopping in round Europe.

Coming out of 8 years of ownership, the car has an extensive service history charting its life since 1986. It presents in very good condition, and had a great combination for a classic SL being a 500 facelift R107.

I've always wanted a 500SL and when I came across this example, I knew this was the one.

Cecil has been the proud owner of this 500SL for the previous 8 years, being meticulous in his maintenance too. It's been a car he's used and say's "It's a pure joy to drive, it puts a smile on my face every time I jump in and start her up".

He purchased it from the SLSHOP 8 years ago to replace his previous Mercedes-Benz Coupe. Cecil has made sure to have the car serviced each year with independent specialists, and have has necessary work carried out where needed (check out all the history/invoices).

Exterior

A big leap forward in the design of the SL, a more assertive front with the strong horizontal design elements on the R107.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original facelift 15" alloy wheels and Avon 2TS tires all round.

We think the alloys look good in non-curbed condition. However, they definitely could do with a refurbishment as they are suffering from corrosion etc due to their 34 years of service. Please view the photos and videos for a more detailed view.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks great on this example when we captured the car, Cecil has had extensive work carried out to make sure this example is in top condition.

Looking over all the panels and leading edges it looks good. Take a look at the extensive video and photo review to see the detail.

Paint

Lovely classic colour choice on this fine example. Finished in the Mercedes-Benz colour of Arctic White, the paint has deep gloss. There is some micro-blistering on the boot lid/rear, take a look at the extensive views for a detailed view of the paintwork on this example.

Glass and Trim

The glass and rubber are in good condition on this example in line with the rest of the car.

The convertible roof is excellent, free from condensation or discolouration having been replaced in the last year or so. The car also comes with a hard top, and a stand for storage.

Interior

Refined luxury which isn't ostentatious, Mercedes-Benz of this era have that quality, familiar feel to them.

Seats and Carpets

We really like the navy leather interior paired with its white exterior, a really nice combo from the '80s. The seats and interior have aged well over the life of the car, the leather look great with only a few age related marks.

The carpets look great and clean too, and Cecil tells us the original carpets under the over mats are unmarked. Please take a look at the in-depth videos and photos for a closer look.

Dashboard

The dashboard has aged nicely too. The wood veneer with chrome trim separating the dashboard from the centre console, a classy look that is also in great condition.

On the very top of the dashboard, next to the windscreen there are some small cracks but overall we think it looks great, in line with the rest of the car. Take a look at the images for the detailed view.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Mercedes-Benz steering wheel fitted here with an automatic gear stick, both in great condition.

This cabin is all about that cruising experience, nothing to distract you from enjoying yourself as you waft about Europes finest roads.

Mechanics

The mighty 5.0L V8, all the power you'll need on tap delivered smoothly through to the rear wheels.

Engine and Gearbox

For long-distance touring this is the engine to have, the 5.0L V8 makes any journey a breeze. You won't have any problem overtaking anything slowing you down on your journey, with a top speed of 135mph. Very quick for the '80s and still to this day!

Cecil assures us that the engine is in great condition and runs smoothly too. Having fluids replaced and the car serviced as specialised every year you can rest assure this example has been cared for, and this car is fitted with a limited slip differential too.

Suspension and Brakes

The market favours post '86 cars for their firmer ride, better handling and control round sweeping bends. The brakes aren't short on performance either, reassuring the driver of taming the speed that's easy to pick up.

Take a look at the underside photographs and video to see the condition of the suspension and brakes, very tidy as you expect from a meticulous owner. Maintenance/refurbishment work on the brakes and suspension has been carried out around a year and a half ago, take a look through the invoices for details.

The Drive

The real reason you want to buy the SL, forget the dashing good looks, this car is all about the drive.

Whether you're cruising slowly through town to the shops or barrelling down the motorway to get to the Italian coastline, this car does it all and does it well.

Electrics and Other

Cecil reports that all electrics are working as expected to his knowledge. It's been fitted with a modern Alpine radio, all the electrics you need for a good road trip!

History and Paperwork

An '86 facelift R107, the 500SL model with 5.0L V8, we think with all the provenance and maintenance it makes this a great buy.

Tons of paperwork with this example. It's great to see all of the service stamps leading right up to this July, and all of the supporting invoices etc.

As you can see from the paperwork photos, Cecil has kept in touch with the previous owner of the vehicle, handwritten letters to each other while he has owned the car. It really shows how much they both care about this example and how much of a passion owning a classic like this really is. The car also has an accompanying hard top, and also a stand for storage which will go with the car at sale.
