Introduction
Alan Stuart
A beautifully maintained late-model R107, this 1987 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL has remained within the same family for almost all of its life.
The R107 SL was produced from 1971 until 1989, making it one of Mercedes-Benz’s longest-running model series. The range was extensively modernised in 1985, introducing revised styling, improved front suspension, and a new selection of engines.
The 300SL formed part of this final generation and was powered by Mercedes-Benz’s smooth 3.0-litre straight-six engine. Combining elegant roadster styling with refined performance and excellent long-distance comfort, it remains one of the most usable and desirable versions of the R107.
Peter purchased this example from his father-in-law in 2001, although the car is understood to have remained within the family for almost all of its life. It has been serviced annually, carefully maintained, and benefited from restoration work in 2014.
This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Hello Peter
Have you been able to look at the bulk heads to see what shape they are in.
If not would somebody be able to send pictures of the internal part of the bulk heads please. That would be amazing
Regards
Simon
Hi Simon,
Afraid I am not technically minded! If you can give me guidance as to where pictures should be taken I am more than happy to oblige. I think I have to send them to Trade Classics who forward them. Get back to me with info and I will sort it,
regards,
Peter
Hi Simon, Just been on utube re Bulkhead problems! Seems that you have to dismantle various parts inside the engine bay to get at it, which is a non starter. What it does say is that early warning signs is water getting into the footwells. Never had any sign of dampness or water ingress into the footwells- hope this is helpful, but get back to me re photos needed,
Regards,
Peter
Hi peter
its under the bonnet near the windscreen were the air inlets are, there is a cover to unscrew sand you can see the chamber of the main bulk head.
i have a link below so you can see from a video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CylxCqKDF4
see if there is any rust around there that would be great
regards
simon
i am very interested in you car just so you know!
Hi Simon, I’ve looked at the utube video, Removed the plastic central cover and taken some pictures. There is a bit of discolouration on the bodywork, definitely no holes ( which there seem to be on the utube video! ) and it is all bone dry. The utube video again mentions water ingress and dampness being obvious in the footwells if there is a problem. There has never been a problem like that with my car. (I will contact Trade Classics about the pictures)
Regards Peter
Hi Simon,
I have sent the pictures to Trade Classics, and they will put them on the website,
regards,
Peter

Thanks,
Colin.
Could you please provide details of exactly what was included in the 2014 restoration, particularly any welding or replacement of the sills, floor pans, chassis/frame sections, jacking points and inner wings? Do you have invoices/photos from the restoration?
Hi , If you go onto the history and paperwork section of the cars history above, what you are looking for I think is included in photos 59-65. Get back to me if there is anything else not included,
Regards,
Peter
Hi Peter
Could you please tell me if the car is
Ulez excempt
Many thanks
Hi Davy – I have had to check with Google – It becomes ulez exempt in January 2027 , and then exempt for road tax in April 2027. Also MOT exempt, with various provisos at the same time.
Regrads,
Peter
Regards !
Hi Peter
The car looks very good but I am a little concerned re the welding which has taken place which might suggest that the car has not been garaged.Has anyone checked the bulkhead for corrosion
Hi There,
Some of the pictures show the garage I have kept it in since I owned it from 2001. ( Car doesn’t go out in the winter!) My father in law owned it from December 1987, and also garaged it. When it had a major restoration work in 2014 it was stripped right down and nothing was said about the bulkhead at that stage.
The guy from Trade classics who assessed the car went over it with a fine toothed comb – took 3-4 hours. He didn’t say anything about the bulkhead, but if you are concerned I would suggest you contact Trade Cassics direct and ask them for any further info,
Hope that this helps,
Regards
Peter

Peter
Hi Mick- checked photo 29. Small amount of rust you can see is on the surface. No perforation of metal as far as I can see,
Regards,
Peter
Hi Peter,
Sorry for asking another question but I’ve just seen picture 29 of the interior photos & I’m concerned about the patch of rust/bubbling at the base below the door hinges
Can you tell whether the steel is solid or perforated?
Many thanks
Mick
Hi Double Maxim – the rust patch in the spare tyre well is approximately 4 x 2 inches. Hidden under the tyre – easily remedied.
Regards
Hi,
Could you please describe the size of the rust patch in the spare tyre well ,
Many thanks
Hi, did car have a new speedo fitted in 1994, as seems mileage in 1993 was 96,214, but in 1995 it was only 5,818. Many thanks
Hi , you are looking at the wrong lines in the service book!
In 1993 the mileage was 34904, (the service number was 96214), For the service on 6/9/95, the mileage was 41629, (the service number was 5818) Speedo has never been changed. Hope this clears up confusion
Regards
Peter
Thank you, I can see now where I was going wrong
Hi
Could you please confirm whether your r107 has k-jetronic or carburettors?
Thanks
Hi , Sorry,I have no idea! I am not an expert with car engines! I always thought that it was a fuel injected straight six, but could you go back to Trade Classics and ask them directly. The guy who checked the car over for them was very very thorough, and would have made some note in his report which should answer your question,
Regards
I have just gone online for spec for 1987 300Sl (R107) and it says KE-Jetronic mechanical-electronic injection
Many thanks for your reply
I only asked because it was mentioned in the mechanical video
