Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Launched just over 30 years ago, the R129 is arguably already a timeless classic.

The R129 SL had a production run from 1989 to 2001, the two-seat roadster modernised significantly in the styling and features like an automated electro-hydraulic soft-top. The SL500, with its reliable M119 5.0L V8 engine, had more power than some of the Ferraris on sale at the same time.

The SL500 was also one of the safest cars ever built, with it’s ‘Wunderbar’ (an automatic roll bar) which deployed within milliseconds of an incident involving the car flipping over. Even to this day, it’s considered an extremely safe sports car to own.

This example is rather special, low mileage at ~27,500, and has been owned by James' family since new. Finished in blue with contrasting cream leather, it really offers timeless good looks.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting James the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This SL 500 has been in our family since new, with low mileage having being used for sunny days.

James purchased the car from his father-in-law in 2015, who was the original owner. The car has been kept in dry storage during the times it's been out of use, helping to explain the excellent condition.

This has been a summer car for the family, maintenance still being actioned regularly. Early servicing was carried out be Lancaster Mercedes-Benz, James is working to source the records on this. Please feel free to ask any questions about the SL 500 in the comments below.

Exterior

Finished in the beautiful dark Azuritblau, a colour that suits the straight line design.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with Mercedes-Benz 16” Alamak forged alloys, they look in really great condition. Fitted with Bridgestone Turanza rubber that looks great with lots of life left in them for the new owner to enjoy.

We noticed some very minor curbing to the outer lip of some of the wheels, but you’ll have to get really close to notice it. View the detailed photos and videos of the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks excellent on this SL 500 as you would expect from a low mileage and low ownership example, meticulously cared for since '94. As pictured the car comes with it's hard top and a stand for storage too.

All the panel gaps are tight and true. And when we look around the car in the photos, we didn’t notice any areas of concern. Please take a look at the exterior videos for a closer look at the bodywork.

Paint

Mercedes-Benz Azuritblau is colour of choice on this car, it's a colour you don't see on these very often, the metallic paint gleaming in the sun.

The paint is even in finish and colour across all the panels from the photos. Just a simple wash in preparation for sale still leaves a sparkling finish. The only element to point out from our observation being the stone chips peppered on the lower front bumper.

Take the time to review the photographs and videos for a detailed view of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition all around the car, in line with the mileage. The trim/rubber seals look great too.

Please view the images and videos of the glass and trim to see in detail.

Interior

An unmistakeable 90's Mercedes-Benz cabin, travel in style and comfort.

Seats and Carpets

Cream leather seats fill the interior with matching carpets and wood veneer trim on the centre console, all in excellent condition.

The carpets/mats look like they would come up looking fresh with a good deep clean, no significant damage. View the photographs for a better view.

Dashboard

The black dashboard is free from cracking or marks, overall in line with the excellent condition of the rest of the car, very clean and smart. The instrument cluster is a similar story with all the numbers are clean, clear and legible, James reporting everything is working as it should.

Please view the images to see the dashboard in more detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A very '90s affair, the classic 4-spoke Mercedes steering wheel puts you in control of the car, the large wheel makes manoeuvring the car a breeze.

The automatic gear knob is also in excellent condition and in-line with the rest of the car. Please take a look at the extensive interior media for a detailed tour.

Mechanics

Effortless power and comfort provided by the flagship M119 5.0L V8, perfect for a roadster like this.

Engine and Gearbox

The powerful and reliable 5.0L V8 is the one most people go for now, fitted with a hydraulic 4-speed gearbox which in-tandem produces 322BHP at 5,500rpm to the rear wheels.

James reports an excellent drive in the SL 500, he mentions the car has more than enough power and silky smooth gear changes - just what you would expect for a car of this calibre and condition.

Suspension and Brakes

The front suspension in this SL 500 has independent damper struts whereas the rear suspension has an independent 5-arm multilink.

The brakes on this car also feature 2-circuit hydraulic power-assisted wheel discs with ABS. James reports a great smooth drive in this SL 500 with great stopping power when required.

The Drive

The SL 500 never fails to put a smile on James' face, the 5.0L V8 is something else and the perfect soundtrack to any great road trip.

Electrics and Other

The cabin and technology in the R129 was a real leap froward from the R107. Electric adjustable memory seats, windows, ABS, the soft-top, anti-roll bar to name but a few.

James reports all the electrics on this car are working as they should to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

An attractive colour combo and flagship engine combined with low mileage and ownership really make this R129.

Being in the family since new, just 1 previous owner recorded with the DVLA which was the change to James. He has built up a history file during his last 6 years of ownership with regular MOT's and Services through the years when required. The last service was dated 28th April 2020 by TM MOTORS, a Mercedes Benz Specialist. The car was serviced by Mercedes-Benz prior to this, and James is working to try and obtain the previous service records that were actioned by Lancaster Mercedes-Benz.

Coming with all the keys and books, just the original service book has gone missing which James is trying his best to locate. The car also comes with the hard-top and storage stand as pictured.

Hi, I have gone onto the Mercedes website earlier, one (and other bidders) are free to check (Mercedes link below) when it was last serviced by Mercedes, unfortunately this only confirms the mileage and not the date. It say 23,007 miles after I’ve entered the registration. Have you heard back from Mercedes general inquiries line? I would just like to know what year the 23,007 (last Mercedes servicing) took place in order to bridge the history from 1994 to 2015 as a prospective buyer.

Hi, from the background I understand this is not an imported car and it mentions you purchased this car from your father-in-law in 2015. Did he have this off the road between 2005 and 2015? As the online .gov site very helpfully for buyers usually allows anyone to view the MOT history for vehicles going back to around 2005 / 2006 online. This car doesn’t have any online MOT history prior to 3 June 2015 at 23,928. Did your father-in-law have the vehicle off the road and SORN in order to avoid the annual £270 road tax?

In a receipt, there was a large bill that included paintwork. What was that paintwork for precisely? Any panel damage or panel filler used?
