A cute two-seater with neat visual design cues - this roadster is rather nippy with its supercharged 2.3L engine.

The SLK-Class was first launched in 1996, and was built at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen until production ended in 2020. SLK is derived from sporty (sportlich), lightweight (leight), and short (kurz). This is the first generation of SLK, known internally as the R170, and penned by the famous Bruno Sacco. The idea behind the SLK-Class was to attract young professionals looking for a good time in a fun sports car. The SLK roadster offers just that in a small two-seat roadster form with a folding hardtop.

This SLK has been in Richard's family since new, and has only covered a mere ~22,000 over its 23 years. Originally owned by Richard's mother who really treasured this 'Brilliant Silver Metallic' example as her weekend car.

Meet the owner

Mum has driven this example across Europe several times, there's nothing quite like driving over the Col du Petit Saint-Bernard to Italy.

Richards's late mum was quite the car enthusiast, having owned a handful of 60s spitfires after leaving university. At the beginning of 1999 she really liked the look of the new SLK concept and therefore began looking for one. The waiting list was close to 2 years, although she managed to find a new example after looking through sales in the Sunday paper.

His mum was quite set on it being silver over black leather, just like the classic 50s SL, which the SLK was largely inspired by. Richard mentions, this was always her second car, garaged and saved for the weekend or holidays.

Richard inherited the car around 7 years ago and is the second registered owner. He's used the car very occasionally over that time, but believes it is time to sell now, due to lack of use and would love to see it enjoyed by another enthusiast. Exterior

A compact 2 seater roadster, the diminutive package makes it ideal for zipping around in.

Wheels and Tyres

The original 16" alloy wheels look good all around on this example, with no obvious curb damage noted but some very slight corrosion around the centres, a common fault with alloys like this.

They are wrapped in Michelin Primacy HP on each corner and dated 2006. There appears to be a good amount of tread left on each tyre.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this car is of a very high standard, as you would expect from low mileage and careful ownership, and having been stored in a garage throughout its life has definitely helped.

The shut lines and panel gaps all look great and flush with no signs of accident repairs in the past, with the underside of the car looking to be clean and solid without any damage.

Paint

Finished in a classic Mercedes-Benz "Brilliant Silver Metallic" which contrasts very nicely with the black leather interior.

The paint looks even in finish and colour across all the panels. Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks in original condition and in line with the low mileage.

The window seals look good too and are in line with the rest of the condition of the car, with folding hard top working with no issue.

A cosy cockpit, luxuriously equipped with features you'd expect in from Mercedes-Benz and comfortable leather seats.

Seats and Carpets

Comfortable black leather sports seats await you in this example. Both seats are in great condition and in line with the age and mileage and show very little signs of wear.

The black SLK carpets appear in line with the rest of the car, i.e. in great condition along with the door cards and headlining.

Dashboard

The dashboard presents in great condition, with classic clear, informative and legible Mercedes-Benz dials.

The dials, controls, and switches are in great condition, and all are said to be functional.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A 4-spoke Mercedes-Benz steering wheel presents in original condition with no obvious signs of wear, equipped with an SRS airbag. The gear-shifter looks in similar condition, along with the patterned centre console trim.

Mechanics

The 2.3L supercharged Kompressor engine like the rest of the SLK is a diminutive package well suited to the chassis.

Engine and Gearbox

Equipped with the 2.3L supercharged Kompressor engine (as in the C-Class) which will hit 60MPH in ~6.4 seconds and tap out at 148MPH.

Suspension and Brakes

Mercedes has created the stiffest bodyshell in the class, so it's no surprise to find that this in turn makes the car one of the safest of its kind.

Richard reports this SLK upholds its prompt stopping power and handling capabilities. Both the suspension and brakes are in full working order with no unusual sounds or vibrations when driven.

The Drive

One sporty roadster you'll definitely want to consider for summer. The combination of the supercharged Kompressor 2.3L with the small and sporty bodyshell creates an engaging drive around town or country roads.

Electrics and Other

The electrical aspects of the car are said to all be up to scratch, highly original and fully working. The car has been said to have spent its life garaged.

History and Paperwork

A lovely low mileage example of a classic in the making - this compact 2 seat roadster is ideal for shooting about in, and coming to market just in time for the good weather.

The car is sold with a good amount of history, having been in the family since new. You can see the paper MOT history with the car, and online too. The start of the cars life, it was serviced by the main dealer in 2 year intervals, and then it moved to specialist. It's covered less than ~1,000 miles in the last 10 years.

Can you advise if there is any rust underneath etc. What condition are the suspension arms, steering rack and wishbones in?

Hi, Suspension arms, steering rack and wishbones are very clean for the year reflective of the limited use it’s had’, MOT history over 20 years without an advisory. You can see the manufacturer paint codes etc and bolt torque paint marks on the suspension type components still. The car is ‘original’. No body rust noted in line with it never being driven over a winter and it being kept garaged. Hope that helps.

Hi Gary, that was last specialist service, I have since serviced myself, (photos are in the paperwork of these) on

16/04/16 22239 miles ( battery, oil and filter)
02/06/18 22588 miles (oil and filter, spark plugs)
09/02/22 22734 miles (oil and filter)

The car was garaged for over 2 years during the pandemic lockdowns

My mum said the MOT garage did oil change every 2 years but there is no paperwork to support this sadly
