Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

A motoring icon, this classic Mini has been restored to a high standard.

Since its launch in the 1960s, the Mini has gathered a huge following, known the world over. Is there a more iconic classic car available today? With such a small footprint, the Mini is a perfect city car. Compared to today's cars, it has a Tardis-like quality with plenty of room for its occupants.

This specific car comes to market ~1 year ownership, and has seen some well-deserved TLC. The vendor is an avid Mini fan, and this was his 8th restoration, even underneath the car has seen a lot of work and the vendor is particularly proud of its condition. The Mini "Sportspack" comes with its original service booklet and a current MOT, which expires on 13.09.2024.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Jim the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I have a real passion for Minis; this is the 8th one I've restored.

Jim, a retired engineer, has thoroughly enjoyed restoring this Mini Sportspack. He purchased it a year ago, the car previously having been sold through us here at Trade Classics. Jim has a passion for restoring cars and has previously restored 7 Minis.

Having completed this restoration, Jim is now seeking a new project and has decided to sell the car now. He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Beautifully finished in blue with a contrasting white roof, this Mini Sportspack has been restored to a high standard.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels on the Mini looked to be in decent condition, though all had some slight kerb marks on the rims and some age-related wear was noticed. The wheels could benefit from refurbishment.

The wheels had a full matching set of Rotalla Setula E-Race tyres fitted, all of which looked to be in good shape with plenty of tread remaining. Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork of the Mini looked to be in great condition. All shut lines around the car were good, and the doors opened and closed with no issues. We didn't notice any dents or visible corrosion on the body of the car.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The lovely "Surf Blue" paint looked to be in great condition, with even coverage and colour around the whole car. We didn't notice any visible corrosion coming through on any of the paint. Being picky, we did notice a couple of very slight runs in the paint on the front end, and there was also a slight chip in the paint on the edge of the boot lid.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All the glass around the car looked to be in great condition; we didn't notice any discolouration, chips, or cracks in any of the glass.

The trim around the car was in good condition. The chrome showed some slight signs of age but nothing major. The badge on the boot lid seemed to be missing, as the holes were still visible where it would have been.

Interior

The blue vinyl seats complement the exterior colour well, and the Mini offers plenty of interior space.

Seats and Carpets

The blue and grey vinyl seats looked to be in good condition, though the bolsters could benefit from a slight clean-up. All the black carpets around the car appeared to be in great condition as well, with three layers in the front. We didn't notice any stains on the carpets.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The metal dashboard looked to be in great condition, with the clocks free from fogging or damage. The odometer read approximately 32,841 miles at the time of our visit.

All other trim also appeared to be in great condition, including the metal door handles and window winders.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Mini branded original steering wheel looked to be in good shape, with only slight wear noticed, which is expected given the age and mileage of the car.

The metal gear knob also looked to be in great condition, with all lettering legible. The gaiter appeared to be in excellent shape as well, with no rips or tears noticed. Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

The peppy little 1.3L engine is full of character, and paired with the firm suspension, the Mini Sportspack feels very sporty indeed.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fired into life at the first attempt and idled smoothly. On the road with Jim, the engine felt strong, delivering plenty of power to accelerate smoothly. The gearbox engaged gears with ease, without any unwanted noises. Jim mentioned that the gearbox has been refurbished during his restoration.

Jim also informed us that he had fitted a new fuel sender the day before our visit. Although he mentioned it had been running a bit lumpy, it seemed to be running well during our visit. He planned to test further after our visit. Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension felt firm as expected from a Mini, yet it handled bumps well. Jim mentioned it had all new shock absorbers. The brakes on the Mini also felt good, stopping the car straight with no pulling on the steering wheel.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

On our short drive with Jim, the Mini performed well, showcasing the playful characteristics that enthusiasts love about it. The firm yet comfortable ride, combined with the raspy and powerful engine, brings a smile to your face.

To see the car in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

The Mini has a good array of dials and features the original Mini cassette radio along with various buttons. While we didn't test everything on the day, Jim told us the radio works intermittently so may need some investigation but assured us that, to his knowledge, everything else was working as expected.

History and Paperwork

The Mini comes with only ~32,841 miles on the clock, it has its original service book and has received a restoration over the past year.

When Jim bought the car, he knew he wanted to restore it. He has done various work both mechanically and cosmetically. He told us the gearbox has been refurbished and he has had the car resprayed.

The car comes with its original service booklet and a current MOT valid until 13.09.2024. The Mini has done ~2,600 miles in the last ~11 years and has only ~32,841 miles on the clock from its ~25 years on the road.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition.
