Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

A limited-run Evo VI, created to celebrate Tommi Mäkinen’s fourth consecutive WRC Drivers’ title with Mitsubishi.

First unveiled in December 1999 in Tokyo, the Tommi Mäkinen Edition was more than just a cosmetic tribute — it was a serious homologation special. Building on the Evo VI’s already impressive platform, the Tommi Mäkinen Edition received several upgrades, including a titanium-alloy twin-scroll turbo, a 10mm lower ride height, and a quicker steering rack. Externally, the front bumper was redesigned to improve airflow to the intercooler, oil cooler, and brakes. 17-inch white Enkei wheels were fitted, along with Ralliart stripes. Inside, the car featured Tommi Mäkinen Edition–embroidered Recaro seats, a Momo steering wheel, and a gearstick with red stitching.

This particular car was imported into the UK from Japan in 2021 by our vendor, who entrusted his driving life long known JDM specialists to restore it to the beautiful standard you see here. This was actioned in 2022, with a large part of the work focusing on the underside of the car. The seller has had the paint depth checked on all exterior panels to confirm that they are believed to be factory original, and the ECU has also been diagnosed to show speed limiter still in place and factory standard. It comes with a fresh MOT valid until 22.10.2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Kirk the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm a big fan of JDM cars, having owned an Evo IV RS for a couple of years, I wanted to see where Mitsubishi took the car with the limited-edition TME.

Kirk was fascinated by the car’s rally heritage, and in 2021 he managed to source the near-original TME in Japan and have it imported. He told us that a drive on a country road “needs to be experienced to be believed” — the grip is phenomenal, and both the steering and brakes live up to the car’s name and reputation. Having covered just under 1,000 miles on dry day trips along the West Coast of Scotland, he’s thoroughly enjoyed his time with it.

With another car soon arriving, Kirk has decided to sell the TME through us. He’ll be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

A true rallying legend, the Tommi Mäkinen Edition features a number of subtle changes that genuinely enhance the Evo VI.

Wheels and Tyres

Kirk managed to source a brand-new set of OEM Enkei wheels from Japan, which arrived in unopened Mitsubishi boxes. The wheels are in excellent condition, finished in white with the original stickers present and correct. The tyres were fitted in June 2024 — a matching set of Goodyear Eagle F1s in size 225/45R17, all date-stamped 2024.

Please refer to the photos and videos for a detailed view of the TME’s exterior, and a closer look at the wheels and tyres, so you can make your own assessment of their condition.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this Evo VI appears to be in excellent condition — we didn’t spot any dents or visible signs of corrosion, with the underside having benefited from restoration last year. All doors, the bonnet, and the boot open and close smoothly and with ease.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Scotia White" paintwork also appears to be in excellent condition overall. We did notice a couple of minor blemishes — one on the front bumper where a small chip has removed some paint, and another touch-up on the nearside of the rear bumper. Kirk has had the paint depth professionally measured to lead to the conclusion that the car retains its factory paint on visible bodywork.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears to be in good condition, with no chips or cracks observed. However, we did notice some marks around the windows frames, thought to be from storage while the car was in Japan.

All of the exterior trim seems to be present and correct, with the exception of the front Mitsubishi logo — Kirk told us it was missing when the car was imported. All decals are in great condition, although some patina is visible on the B-pillars.

Interior

The bucket seats hold you firmly in place as you tackle winding roads.

Seats and Carpets

The Recaro bucket seats, embroidered with the Tommi Mäkinen Edition logo, are in good condition overall. Some wear was noted on the driver’s side bolster, but no tears were observed on any of the seats. We did spot a couple of small marks on the rear passenger-side seat.

The carpets also looked well maintained, although there was a slight mark in the passenger footwell. A few marks were visible on the rear of the headlining, and the door cards appeared slightly tired in line with mileage.

Dashboard

The dashboard appeared to be in good condition, with no cracks or splits. The instrument cluster was clear and showed 123,934km at the time of our visit, Kirk has added a few more kms since our visit, just taking the car round the block to keep it running well, the current mileage is 123,942km.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in excellent condition, having been re-trimmed by Royal Steering Wheels in leather with red stitching, just like the original.

The leather gearstick, featuring matching red stitching, also looks great, with the embossed numbers clearly visible.

Mechanics

With restorative works carried out in 2022, the chassis and running gear on this car present beautifully as pictured.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.0L turbocharged engine fired up first time without issue. On the road, it felt plenty powerful, accompanied by a satisfying turbo whoosh. The engine remains standard apart from the air filter and a Stage 1 remap tailored for UK fuel, which was carried out on the road using the car’s natural airflow. Kirk told us the turbo has been refurbished to address the ‘penny valve’ issue, with a new actuator and replaced gaskets. The fuelling system has been completely overhauled, including an internally restored fuel tank, a new fuel pump, cleaned fuel lines, a new fuel filter, and cleaned injectors.

The 5-speed gearbox felt excellent on the road, with gears engaging smoothly and without issue. Watch the video to see and hear the car in action on the road.

Suspension and Brakes

Underneath, the car has undergone a full overhaul, with the suspension completely replaced using all new bushes. Everything remains standard except for the lower front suspension strut brace and the boot strut brace. Kirk has also had the wheels professionally aligned.

The Brembo brake discs and pads have all been replaced, including the backing plates.

The Drive

Out on the road, the TME felt planted — exactly what you’d expect from a homologation special. We didn’t notice any knocks or bangs from underneath the car. It stuck to the road through some twisty sections with impressive grip. The brakes were sharp, bringing the car to a steady stop in a straight line.

We didn’t push it flat out, but even at half throttle the speed built up effortlessly. The gearbox handled the power smoothly, with no crunching or unwanted noises. Kirk told us that since the remap, fourth gear now feels like third.

Electrics and Other

All the switches are believed to be in working order. Kirk mentioned that the radio is Japanese, so it’s difficult to tune into UK radio stations.

History and Paperwork

Having undergone a nut-and-bolt underside restoration in 2022, this TME is ready for its new owner to enjoy and comes to market from ~4 year ownership.

Having found the car at a dealership in Japan, Kirk imported it to the UK in May 2021. While there is no history available from its time in Japan, there is plenty of documented maintenance from its time in the UK. In 2021, many new parts were fitted, including front strut top mounts (Ralliart), radiator cap, steering rack boot, thermostat, front ball joint and rubber cover, a new battery, steering wheel refurbishment, AYC system drained, cleaned and refilled twice, new discs and pads, oil and filter change, new fuel filter, new differential fluids, new gearbox fluid, and a rear fog light added.

In 2022 the underside underwent a full nut-and-bolt restoration with re-plating.

In June 2024, Kirk sourced the OEM Enkei TME wheels and fitted them with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric tyres. In 2025, the wheel alignment was checked, and the fuel tank restored with a new fuel pump fitted, fuel lines cleaned, a new fuel filter installed, and the injectors cleaned. The turbo was refurbished with a new actuator, the penny valve replaced, and gaskets renewed. A Stage 1 ECU flash remap was also installed; the ECU was found to be factory standard with the speed limiter still in place.

Kirk had the paint measured in July 2025, confirming that it is all factory original. The number plate T11 MKA is not included in the sale.

Kirk has taken the Evo for a fresh MOT which is valid until 22.10.2026.
