Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Instantly recognisable, the Morgan 4/4’s lineage spreads over 83 years, and it still has the same charm factor today as the very first model way back in 1936.

Originally released in 1936 the Morgan 4/4 has served as one of the worlds longest automotive production runs in history, with only a brief pause in manufacturing during the second world war, the Morgan 4/4 spans a whopping 83 years with production finally ending in 2019. Having been through a number of revisions during that time this particular Morgan 4/4 is a 1800 model first registered in 1985. Being one of the later 1600 models it benefits from a number of manufacturing changes and upgrades such as the 1.6L Ford CVH engine and four speed manual gearbox. The iconic exterior styling of the Morgan 4/4 is instantly recognisable, the curvaceous front wings, the sloping rear arches, and the retro wire wheel design all come together to form the perfect representation of classic British motoring.

This particular example comes to us as a probate sale, coming to market from family ownership since ~2008. It's a car that has been used regularly, the total mileage likely to be ~117,000 with the clock going round and now reading ~17,800, and the vendors have recently put the car through an MOT with works including a brake overhaul and new battery, along with some chassis work.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Vicky the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This was my uncles car originally, he thoroughly enjoyed the car as a Sunday driver.

This car is being sold as part of a probate sale by Vicky, the niece of the late owner. The car has been in the family since ~2008, and in that time, her uncle covered some ~18,000 miles.

Vicky has put the car through a recent MOT, and actioned work that was needed for it to pass. This included getting a repair to the chassis, and a brake overhaul, she tells us that this came to a cost of ~£1,200. Vicky will do her best to answer questions on the car, but please keep in mind this car belonged to her late uncle.

Exterior

The exterior styling of the Morgan 4/4 is timeless and immediately recognisable with its sleek black paintwork and curvaceous body lines.

Wheels and Tyres

With its retro wire wheel design finished in chrome, these wheels give the Morgan a lot of character. The wheels appear to be in good condition for the age, with no major sign of damage to any of the spokes and only light weathering to the chrome surface.

The wheels are fitted with two Firestone tyres and two Continental tyres, these appear to also be in good condition, with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of age to the sidewalls however the tyres themselves do seem to be quite old with no obvious DOT markings present.

Bodywork

The Morgan's bodywork presents well, with no misaligned panels that we could see, all panel gaps and shut lines appeared to be straight and line up as they should. Unfortunately however there is some light bubbling present on the car and a spot of heavier rust under the drivers side headlight.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The sleek black paintwork certainly catches the eye. We could not see any major stone chips or scuffs during our time with the vehicle, however there is a scratch approximately three inches long on the lower side of the drivers rear wheel arch.

The images we have taken are from multiple angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, so you can make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the vehicle is in good condition, with no cracks, splits, scratches, or chips, but it does look to be delaminating slightly at the edges. The trim pieces on the vehicle such as the bumpers are also in good condition and are the original items as far as Vicky is aware.

Interior

The simple yet elegant interior of the Morgan 4/4 is a comfortable and nostalgic place to be, wooden accents and red leather upholstery, there isn’t much not to like.

Seats and Carpets

The red leather seats are well used and tell a tale of many happy miles spent enjoying the Morgan. Whilst the leather is dry and cracked, this unique patina lends itself to the age and originality of the car. It's worth noting damage to the leather in the form of a small rip to the passenger side lower seat.

Instead of carpet the Morgan is fitted out with matching red leather in the footwells/transmission tunnel, this looks to be in a similar condition to the rest of the interior.

Dashboard

The Morgans dashboard consists of a simple yet attractive inlay of burl wood, with a tidy cluster of dials and gauges displaying all the information you need about the car. The dash is in good condition with no signs of delamination, common on this style of dashboard, and no damage to the clocks or gauges either.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both steering wheel and gear stick are the original items and are in good condition for their age, much like the rest of the car. The wooden steering wheel is without any major visible damage and the same is to be said of the gear stick.

Mechanics

Featuring the 1.6L Ford CVH engine and four speed manual transmission, this Morgan 4/4 provides a truly nostalgic driving experience but with Ford reliability to boot.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.6L CVH engine from Ford is a generally reliable unit, on the day of our visit we started the car from cold and it turned over without issue and did not smoke at all when revved, this can be seen in our “On The Road" video, as well as a short drive out in the car.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension on the car is in seemingly good condition, with no untoward knocks or bangs to be heard when out on the road. Likewise the brakes seem to work well and without issue.

The car has got a current MOT, the vendor informing us the chassis work that was required along with a brake overhaul coming to a cost of ~£1,200.

The Drive

Being the attention grabbing drive that it is, the driving experience of the Morgan 4/4 is spent crossing between showering in admiration from passersby, and enjoying the nostalgic experience of cruising down the road in a car that looks, feels, and drives like the classic British icon that it is.

Electrics and Other

The electrical systems on the Morgan 4/4 are limited, however what little electricals there are work just fine. All gauges on the dashboard looking to be working, along with the speedometer and rev counter too.

History and Paperwork

With a current MOT and long family ownership since ~2008, this Morgan 4/4 looks to be a good example of an iconic British classic.

This 1985 Morgan 4/4 1600 comes to us from long ownership with Paul and is being auctioned by current caretaker Vicky to allow for the vehicle to be loved and cared for by a new owner. With no obvious or immediate issues that we could see and a current MOT in the bag, there should be little worry about the condition of this car.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Part with not orientation(?) ….. sorry about that

This car was removed from auction, having not achieved its reserve. It was then reposted at a selling price – and obviously not sold again.

So Q? What is the lowest acceptable orientation to part with this car?
