Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

The 996 is a well engineered and accessible sports car, with a formidable driving experience.

Practicality, reliability and watertight build quality are not usually associated with sports cars, but for over 64 years, the Porsche 911 has not only become synonymous with its thoughtful ergonomics, durability and craftsmanship, but one of the most convincing arguments for owning a sports car that has almost everything to thrill an enthusiast.

The 996 model is the first-generation of water-cooled 911, and it soon found an appreciative market, solidifying the 911’s legend, but rewarded Porsche with a sales success that would be attributed to stabilising the company. Redesigned from the ground up, styled with an uncluttered interior but retaining the iconic 911 silhouette, it was also cheaper to maintain, stronger and featured state-of-the-art technology.

Offered with four-wheel drive, utilising a 3.4-litre flat-6 engine producing almost 300 bhp, this 2000 Cabriolet comes to market after ~12 years with our vendor and is finished in 'Balsalt Black Metallic', with a Saffron leather interior. It comes with an impressive provenance, which includes 18 service stamps, a binder of invoices reaching back to when the car was new, including its original bill of sales. It has an MOT to December 2026, was last serviced in May 2025 and comes with two keys.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Bally the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's all I need in a car, fun for daily use or spirited drives.

Having bought the car in 2014, Bally purchased the car to replace his beloved Audi TT, and was instantly spellbound by the Porsche's handling balance, excellent finish and design simplicity of the 996. Opting for the cabriolet, even with the hood up, he tells us it feels secure and planted on the road.

Bally is only selling the car due to shortly taking delivery of another Porsche.

Bally will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Open top motoring with the reassurance of solid construction.

Wheels and Tyres

The 18” Sport Design alloys are in good shape, with just some minor signs of age.

The front of the car is fitted with 2022 Charmhoo tyres with the front showing a spec of 225/40, and the rear Fronway tyres are 265/35 - these are date coded from 2023. All four have plenty of life in them.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The exterior presentation is smart, with a decent panel fit and even shut lines. All doors open and close with ease, with functional passenger glass drops.

There is corrosion on the offside front wing arch and base, and rear wheel arch on the same side. We also noticed some bubbling on the nearside A-pillar near the windscreen. There is a minor but treatable dent on the passenger door and a light imperfection on the luggage lid, consistent with the lid being shut on the luggage content.

The structure of the car appears to be solid, with no issues noted on the floor pan, wheel wells or suspension mounts. There is a £1,300 welding bill from December 2025.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The 'Balsalt Black Metallic' paint has a consistent finish and a positive lustre, having recently been professionally detailed.

Being picky, the nose of the car has a few light road wear chips and a touched-up scratch repair on the offside rear wing, near the drivers door. The tops of the wings, windscreen frame and engine cover lid have a rash of minor blisters consistent with a paint reaction.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass, headlamps and taillights are clean, with decent seals.

The interior trim where the luggage lid meets the headlamps has cracks.

The nearside lower trim is slightly loose, but otherwise the fittings and trim are in good shape.

The bumpers are flush to the body with no significant marks or damage.

image

Interior

Finished in a distinctive 'Saffron' leather cabin, it offers a timeless, driver-focused design and excellent ergonomics.

Seats and Carpets

The 'Saffron' leather hide seats are in line with the age of the car; the seats show creasing and mild wear.

The driver's seat has a couple of deep folds but is free of rips or tears.

The carpets show mild fade and minor wear in the foot wells, and all are free of damp.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard has a few minor marks and scuffs and shows wear/paint repair on the centre console. The controls and switches are presentable. All are said to function as they should.

The door cards are in good condition, with no marks on the headlining. The rest of the interior trim is consistent with the general condition of the cabin. The luggage area has been carefully used.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever show wear in line with the age of the car.

image

Mechanics

An impressive maintenance history and regular servicing ensure that the car remains a joy to drive.

Engine and Gearbox

The Porsche started up with no issues, the dashboard warning lights all remained off, with no unwanted engine noises. It idles smoothly with no undulations.

There were no unwanted exhaust fumes after the initial cold engine condensation. There were no fluid leaks spotted on the day.

The six-speed gearbox was proven to operate without any issues. Bally demonstrated its performance during the drive and is also happy with the feel of the clutch.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The car brakes confidently, with no negative feedback or squeals. All of the pads and discs were renewed around 5,000 miles ago.

The suspension dealt with the roads with no adverse reactions to the handling; it absorbs the surface with no notable mechanical rattles or thuds. The rear shocks were replaced in late 2022.

image

The Drive

The 911 in Carrera 4 form easily matches the performance demands for most drivers, and even in 996 form, it still manages to exceed expectations of driver dynamics, usability and practicality. Docile and manageable around town, the steering didn’t show any issues with no reported faults and was free of wobbles or play.

The combination of a 6-speed gearbox and the willing 3.4-litre flat-six engine is an appreciated combination, and its regular attention to maintenance and upkeep is evident in the large file of invoices since new.

There was a little cabin rattle, which Bally attributes to the dashboard trim, but the car felt cohesive and free of any mechanical noises. The car was opened up on a short stretch - it pulls evenly with plenty of urge and grips with no unwanted noises and felt confident during the test drive.

Bally has not reported any issues with oil pressure or engine temperature, and he told us that the water pump has been renewed.

image

Electrics and Other

The rear spoiler warning light illuminated briefly during the cold start video but switched off once the car was in motion.

While we did not test all electrical systems during our visit, Bally confirmed that, to his knowledge, all functions are in working order. A minor battery drain has been identified, linked to the alarm system.

The electrically operated hood is in good condition with no significant marks or damage - it operates without any faults or strains.

image

History and Paperwork

It comes with 18 service stamps and a folder of invoices since new, including its original bill of sales.

The car comes with an impressive folder full of invoices and provenance since new, which includes its full owner's wallet, booklets and evidence of regular maintenance. The service book includes 18 service stamps.

Invoices since 2022 include welding, a new water pump, electrical and roof work, a sensor, a door catch, and shock absorbers. Older work includes new silencers and welding. It was last serviced around 2,000 miles ago by a Porsche Specialist and has an MOT to December 2026. The car also comes with two keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

have these issues on the 12/5/2025 be done. osr rake pipe heavily corroded / rear bushes perished / all four rear cv boots perished / both lower rad brackets corroded / rear arm bushes corroded / exhausts clamps corroded / cam carriers leaking both sides / exhaust blow from both clamps. also i have notice that the ims bearing has never been done and could be a big issue if this should fail especially with the miles it has done although Your 2000 car is likely dual-row, but that’s not a free pass

At 114k miles with original IMS & clutch, preventative work will have to be done

Doing nothing = rolling the dice with a £10k+ engine. please let me know before bidding ends. kind regards

Hi, do you have any pictures of the underside? There has just been a lot of welding done for the current mot and it also failed the mot on welding in 2020. There is still an advisory for corrosion on the current mot, so I would like to see the condition of the underside if possible? Thanks
