Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Open-top motoring with durability and a twist of urge that Porsche are synonymous with.

The 996 completely redesigned the 911 philosophy and focused on making it more manageable while retaining the 911's head-turning allure. Practicality and usability play an equal part in the 996 DNA, going hand in hand with its exhilarating driving experience and performance. It was known as the first water-cooled 911, which contrary to the purist's protest, proved to be a significant step towards making the 996 series one of the brand's most popular models, strongly suggesting it was far better than the air-cooled model it replaced.

This 2001 Carrera model comes to market from ~4.5 years ownership and is fitted with the Tiptronic gearbox, along with PCM, PSM, rear park assist and is furnished with a leather cabin and a separate hardtop. Regularly used and maintained, it has seen ~£4,500 worth of spend on it over the last 5 years, and comes with a full-service history and an MOT to January 2023.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Sam the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Used for work, as well as the school run, this 911 has served me well, one car to do it all!

Sam has used the car on regular basis, utilising it as a daily driver. He mentions that the cosmetics may be less than perfect but the mechanical aspect, thanks to regular maintenance and servicing makes it a dependable preposition.

Used on the occasional longer journey to allow the car to stretch its legs, the 911 is surprisingly practical and useable. He plans to replace the Porsche with a similar themed opened topped car in the near future, and so this 911 comes to market after ~4.5 years ownership. Sam will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Unmistakenly part of the 911 heritage, although the design did away with the round headlamps, the 996 retains the classic 911 silhouette.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the factory 18" 5 spoke wheels, alloys have seen better days and really do need a refurbishment. With kerb damage and some lacquer peel on the paint noted, in addition to this 3 of the centre cap emblems are missing.

The front tyres are Bridgestone and date from 2016, with the rears being more recent items. All have a legal tread level from our observation.

Bodywork

The structure of the car looks to be in sound order, with no outstanding issues of note. The sills, inner wings, luggage and engine bay appear to be solid. There are no significant external issues, with the slightest hint of age noted on the lowest sections of the front wheel arches, typical for the 996. The exterior metalwork is generally good, with small but treatable dents observed on the nearside door, offside wing and rear scuttle roof lid panel. Both bumpers show evidence of light parking damage but still appear to retain a decent fit to the body. The rest of the panels, including the doors, are also well placed with even gaps throughout. All of the doors open and close without issues.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paint coverage on the sides and boot of the car, particularly on the metal is good and shows a good lustre. There are a few scuffs noted on the bumpers, with paint cracks on the rear item. The lower sections of the front bumpers have a few marks too. The bonnet and tops of the front wings will need a repaint, as it has flattened somewhat and catches the light with more haze than the rest of the car.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, with no notable issues in terms of cracks or damage. The glass and door seals are good. The trim is generally in good condition, with no outstanding issues. The headlamps showed slight signs of age, with the rear items in good condition.

The car is said to come with its hardtop, we are awaiting pictures from the owner.

Interior

Ergonomics and comfort is a given in a 911, and with the design of the cabriolet you have the benefit of the open top experience too.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats retain their firmness, with typical age-related light wear but all are free of rips. The driver's side bolsters and the back of both front seats shows a little more in terms of damage.

The carpets are all in good shape and look to be bone dry on our observation, the colour of the carpets showing some fading as is typical for this era of 911.

Dashboard

The dashboard retains its quality, just a few marks and scuffs on the lower section and centre console. The facia is still presentable, with no issues with the switchgear or controls. The binnacle looks decent, with all of the instruments fully legible.

The door cards do show signs of wear, particularly around the driver's side interior handle/armrest. Some of the interior plastics show a similar amount of wear, typical for a 996. The headlining is generally free from any damage, with small marks noted towards the rear.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good shape, a three spoke item with the Tiptronic controls, with limited wear. The handbrake and gear lever are in line with the age of the car.

Mechanics

Agile in faster corners, the 996 is perfectly usable in town too, the 3.6L flat six although water-cooled still offering a familiar sound.

Engine and Gearbox

The car has seen a steady amount of regular use, which combined with its good maintenance and servicing schedule should lay a considerable amount of confidence in its mechanical durability.

The car starts up without any hesitation, with no warning lights being flagged up on the dashboard. There were no signs of fluid leaks noted. The gearbox performs well, with no reported issues. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has seen brake, brake line and suspension work over the last 5 years, which also reflects its roadworthiness. The brakes look like they're in good physical shape, with no issues with their function noted on our trip, the numerous speed humps didn't pose any issues with suspension or brakes and no creaking or rattling was heard.

The Drive

The 996 reinforces the 911's reputation as a driver's car, and this example is no exception. The Tiptronic gearbox adds considerable appeal to urban driving.

The cornering is precise, with no juddering or extreme play noted in the steering when braking or accelerating. As the car opened up on the wider faster roads, the car feel planted and tight on the open road. The weather conditions were near perfect, so the Porsche Stability Management didn't need to kick in, but it is said to be fully operational when things do get sticky.

Electrics and Other

The canvas roof shows minor signs of surface marks, with the odd sign of age-related wear but looks to be leak-free from our observation. A deep clean would resolve many of the issues.

It lowers and raises with no trouble, with no straining or hesitancy to its action. The car comes with a hardtop which is in good condition.

History and Paperwork

It comes with a full service history and evidence regular expenditure in the current ownership, this cabriolet 996 could be a sensible buy for a bit of summer fun.

The car comes with a full-service history, with further evidence of work carried out under the guidance of previous owners. Sam has spent around £4000 during his ownership, which includes a continuing duty of servicing, a new suspension arm, sensor, window regulator, drop links and brake lines. Other notable recent big money items include a rear exhaust, alternator and brake work. The car had a service at the beginning of the year and has an MOT to January 2023.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
