Introduction

Ashley Dawson
Professional Consigner

Pure driving pleasure, combining Porsche’s timeless design with mid-engined balance and sharp handling - a modern classic that’s as exciting today as when it first hit the road.

The Porsche Boxster (986) is a modern classic that perfectly captures Porsche’s philosophy of balance, performance, and style. As the brand’s entry-level sports car of the era, it played a vital role in bringing Porsche to a wider audience while staying true to its heritage. Combining everyday usability with genuine sports car thrills, the 986 remains a highly desirable choice for enthusiasts seeking an authentic Porsche driving experience.

With its mid-engine layout, precise steering, and superb chassis balance, the Boxster quickly earned praise as one of the best-handling cars of its time. Powered by a smooth and responsive flat-six engine, it offers plenty of performance to match its timeless roadster design.

The Boxster comes from ~3 years ownership with little works being required with its current keeper. Routine maintenance has been actioned as required, including replacing both front coil springs, brakes, exhaust sensor and a new sealing kit for the convertible roof.

The final sale of the car includes a set of summer and winter wheels - both of which are Porsche, the drivers' folio, manual and Porsche booklets.

Take a look over what's on offer with this example - finished in the eye catching 'Speed Yellow', this one is a real drivers' car with its engaging manual gearbox - designed to go fast and look good.

This listing was written from information supplied by Ashley after meeting Jo the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A little ray of sunshine on the road - it’s a very comfortable drive as the seats just hug you, plus the speed and noise is brilliant!

Jo, the current owner, has grown up around classic cars for all of her life. Her dad had owned everything from a Sunbeam Tiger, to Scimitars, Minis and Aston Martins. As a result, Jo has always chosen interesting and fun cars to drive instead of normal family cars.

Having always wanted to own a Porsche one day, Jo scoured the country for a good one for several months until she found this one - Jo tells us, "the condition, colour and drive of it was just perfect. It was everything I wanted".

The 986 comes to market only due to a change in life circumstance for Jo, she said, "I’m only wanting to sell it as my job now dictates I drive a lot of motorway miles. Practically, I need something that will be better for the long journeys. My elderly parents also now live with us so I’ve brought a 7-seater SUV so that I can drive them, our two kids and the dogs all about when needs be. If it was my choice alone I’d be keeping it, but the practicalities of life dictate otherwise".

Should any further queries be needed on the car, Jo would be happy to answer these in the comments section below.

Exterior

With its sleek lines, wide stance, and unmistakable Porsche curves, the 986 embodies timeless Boxster style that still turns heads today.

Wheels and Tyres

The 17" 5-spoke alloy wheels, finished in silver all appeared to be in good overall condition. We noted some light age-related marks to the wheels, in keeping with the age of the Boxster, but otherwise, there were no major issues.

The exterior is finished with coloured Porsche crest wheel caps (option code 446) and the wheel bolts were changed in February 2021.

The Boxster is fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres all round showing 205/50 at the front and 255/45 at the rear - the front tyres are date coded from 2014 and 2012 to the rear.

There were a few signs of cracking to the sidewalls which may be a consideration to replace by the future owner.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Boxster and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

Bodywork

The exterior is neatly presented with no concerning panel damage. The panels are flush to the body with positive shut lines. All of the doors open and close with ease. The underside looks solid, with just signs of age to the surfaces.

There was a note of scuffing to the base of the underside here due to its lower road stance.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The paintwork on the Boxster has good coverage and overall quality across the panels, finished in a really stand out colour of 'Speed Yellow'. A good level of polishing and detailing would likely bring back some of the original lustre.

We did note that there were a few stone chips over the panels, although these were in keeping with the age of the car. There were also marks on inside door underside edges, a mark on driver side wing mirror and a slight scuff to the rear bumper.

Looking closely at the passenger side rear of the car, there was a sign of lacquer peel to rear quarter panel.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to form your own opinion about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The top-tinted windscreen (option code 567), side and rear windows all displayed well. Front and rear lights all appear in good condition.

The rear Boxster badge has damage to the corner edge as pictured in our exterior gallery images.

The convertible roof had sealing work carried out and the driver's door seal was replaced in June 2023. The headlining of the cabin looked great, and to the outside, the roof again showed well.

We didn't note any issues on the seals on the exterior and these areas showed to be in-line with the condition of the rest of the car. To the interior, door cards showed well, with only a few minor marks on the trim.

There was an area of trim broken on rear quarter edge.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video. We take you across all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

Interior

The driver-focused cabin blends road focused simplicity with modern comfort for an engaging sporty feel.

Seats and Carpets

The Porsche is kitted out with 2-way electrical leather seats - they show in respectable condition, but there were a few areas of wear to the driver's bolster and these would benefit from a clean over. To the rear of both seats, there was obvious wear.

The Boxster is equipped with yellow seat belts, part of the optional equipment factory extras.

The car is fitted with black Porsche floor mats. The carpet areas in the cabin and front boot are also in good condition. We found no issues when looking underneath the floor mats, although a clean over would be of benefit.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The black dashboard appears in great shape with no cracks or scratches to report. The mileage counter showed ~110,652 miles at the time of our visit.

The display area of the dials and gauges is clear and without concern, with the triple gauge setup looking very smart. All dials are functional, showing clearly with no obvious marking or scratching to the facings across the driver's section.

We noted that no warning lights were displayed on the dash when the car was out on the road.

Our interior gallery section offers some closer images of the Porsche dashboard—head over and see the car's interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Finished in black leather, the steering wheel is in good condition, just a few signs of wear to the edges and would benefit from a light clean up. The Porsche crest fitted to the centre of the wheel showed well here.

The gear selector showed well and without major concern, just a few notes of age. The handbrake showed some signs of wear and fade to the finish and surround.

We've detailed more images of the cabin area, including the steering wheel, in our Interior Gallery section—head over to see more shots of what the Boxster has to offer.

Mechanics

The mid-mounted 2.7L flat-six produces ~228 BHP, launching from 0–60 in ~6.5 seconds from factory, all while delivering the unmistakable soundtrack that makes every drive so special.

Engine and Gearbox

Starting up the car, we noted no concerns, just a little squeak on firing it up. The Porsche performed without issue while running and out on the road and we saw no issues or signs of smoke.

The manual gearbox worked smoothly on the road, with no unwanted noises. The gearbox showed no concerns regarding its performance while driving.

We took the car out on some local roads with the current owner to get a better feel for what this vehicle is all about. During the drive, we ran through the motions, taking the Boxster through the gears and getting an overview from Jo's perspective on how the car performs.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no knocks, bangs or other issues from the suspension when we were on the road, and it gave us no concerns in its performance or handling.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey, and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect.

The rear brakes had the pads changed to Pagid items in 2023.

Please take a look over the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

Behind the wheel, the Boxster delivers a driving experience that’s pure Porsche. Its mid-engine layout provides superb balance and agility, while the precise steering offers exceptional feedback through every corner. The flat-six engine provides smooth, responsive power, making both spirited drives and relaxed cruising equally rewarding.

Jo, the current owner, tells us more about the drive in the Porsche, "The drive is very smooth and comfortable. It’s a really responsive car. Nippy, with excellent acceleration and great brakes. It sounds good too, and it’s fantastic to drive with the roof down on a sunny day, even in the winter".

With its sporty suspension and a slick gearbox, the Boxster feels planted and confidence-inspiring, offering the kind of engaging, open-top motoring that continues to make it a standout among sports cars of its era.

Electrics and Other

The optional equipment codes, detailed in the servicing book, note that the Porsche includes: (C16) UK LUX spec, (XSC) Porsche crest embossed in headrest, (XSY) yellow seat belts, (375 and 376) 2-way electrical sports seats, left and right, (424) CD compartment and (441) radio preparation, (446) wheel caps with coloured Porsche crest and (502) produced in Finland.

Other included features are: (551) wind deflector, (567) top-tinted windscreen, (584) storage box on engine cover, (659) on-board computer, (689) preparation for CD changer, (695) CD-radio Porsche CDR 30 and (983) leather seats.

Jo told us that she has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car, and to the best of her knowledge, everything was working as it should. All switches and gauges appear to be in good condition, although we did note that the stereo dials showed some signs of wear.

History and Paperwork

Largely original, the Boxster comes to market from ~3 year current ownership and both summer and winter wheel sets, ready for all seasons.

The Porsche has been kept as close to its specification as when it first left the factory. No major works have been necessary in the last ~3 years whilst Jo, the current keeper, has had ownership of the car. Jo tells us more here, "I’ve just done routine maintenance bits as required, including replacing both front coil springs, brakes and an exhaust sensor".

The final sale of the car includes, a set of summer and winter wheels - both of which are Porsche.

We cover the history of the Porsche in our paperwork gallery. Take a look over the previous servicing records and MOT certificates to see more behind the Boxster.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
