Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

The 997 variant of the 911 started production in 2004, replacing the 996, Porsche brought back the more familiar oval-shaped headlights the 911 was known for.

The Carrera S was fitted with a 3.8L flat-six, up from 3.6L in the 996, producing ~350BHP. The S also got a few upgrades over the standard Carrera, including; upgraded brakes and 19” alloy wheels. With the familiar rear-engined, rear wheel drive layout the Carrera S offers a unique driving experience.

This particular 997 Carrera S comes to market after ~2 years of ownership with ~97,700 miles on the clock. Finished in triple black, this coupe has some nice options such as the mutli-function Tiptronic control steering wheel, sun/moon roof, Porsche crests on the heated leather seats. It has recently received new brake discs and pads all round, you can see the invoice in the paperwork section below. Being a Gen 1 997 S, it's good to know this car comes with a bore score report carried out last year, and a solid history file too.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've owned a few Porsches over the years, starting with a 944 S2 before moving to a 996, and then this 997.

John has owned this Carrera S for over 20 months, he took his time when looking for a 997, his cars have always been triple black, and this 997 with sunroof and Alcantara headlining attracted his attention. The extensive history of the car came with made it an easier decision too. In his ownership John has spent ~£5,500 on servicing and maintenance, including new engine mounts and a major service in the summer of 2021. More recently, this October, John has replaced all the brake discs and pads as well as, drop links and a couple of sensors.

John has enjoyed the 997 and feels its time to try something else, having covered ~1,500 miles, he'd love someone else to enjoy the car as much as he has. He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

The classic 911 shape hasn't changed too much since the 60s, just a bit wider but that familiar face, the 997 really has a presence on the road.

Wheels and Tyres

The 19” "Lobster Claw" alloy wheels looked in good shape, we only noticed one which had a nick in it, the drivers side front, just next to one of the wheel nuts.

A few different brand tyres were on the 997, a matching set of Bridgestone Potenza at the front, with a Toyo Proxies Sport and a Continental ContiSportContact 3 on the rear. All tyres looked to have plenty of life left in them. Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

All panels on this Carrera S looked in good shapes with panel gaps tight, as you would expect. We didn't notice any dents or any visible signs of corrosion on any of the panels. All doors etc open and closed with ease, and sun/moon roof working as it should too, a nice option you don't see very often on the 997.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Basalt Black", it's an ever popular colour on a modern Porsche 911. The finish and colour of the paint is even, and although we didn't notice many swirl marks in the paint, it did lack a bit of shine, this could be sorted with a machine polish we think. We did notice the scratch on the front bumper and the marking on the top of the front passenger side wing as mentioned above. We also noticed some stone chips on the bonnet and rear arches.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Glass around the car looked in good shape, with no discolouration. We did notice a few slight stone chips on the windscreen, no cracks though. The trim around the lower part of the car looked to have a few blemishes in it, and seemed to be a bit loose at the front of the passenger side rear wheel arch.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

A classic Porsche interior greets the driver, black leather with silver trim, the 997 interior finish was a step up from the predecessor.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats looked in good condition, these ones optioned with the Porsche crest in the headrests and heating option. The wear to the drivers side is in line with the mileage, and it could be rectified we think. The rear seats looked in ok condition, they both had some slight marks on them likely from storage.

The carpets looked to be in good condition, we didn't notice any stains on them. Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

You are greeted by classic dials with the centre rev counter the 911 is known for. The dashboard is wrapped in black leather and looks in great condition.

The centre console has the controls for elements like suspension and spoiler, we noticed some scratches on the centre console which you can see in the photos and video below, as well as wear to the heating controls that the 997 is known for.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The multifunction steering wheel looked to be in good shape, with only slight wear noticed around the rim. The Tiptronic gear selector also looked to be in good condition, with a little bit of wear noticed on it too.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

With the 3.8L flat-six in the rear, 911 recipe lives on with the Carrera S, that rear engined rear wheel drive experience.

Engine and Gearbox

The flat-six fired up at first time of asking with no fuss. Out on the road with John we found the engine very smooth and responsive, the gearbox also felt refined with smooth changes. We didn't notice any unwanted noises from either the engine or gearbox. This being a Gen 1 997 S, they can suffer from bore score issues, John had an inspection actioned last year and it came back clear.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

Out on the road the suspension felt compliant, giving a comfortable ride. We didn't witness any banging or other noises coming from the suspension. The brakes had just recently been replaced all round, discs and pads. John told us they were still bedding in but would be sorted in the next week or so, they felt good though, biting well.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

Whilst on a short drive with John the car felt tight, with the engine feeling powerful and smooth, the ride was good too. The cabin was comfortable with no rattles etc observed either. Overall a great driving car.

To see the car in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

All electrics in the car seemed to be working well, when the car was off we did notice a slight flicker in the lights, but didn't notice if this still occurred when the car was turned on. We witnessed the sunroof working, this has been Johns preferred method for cooling in the summer, he mentions that the AC system does need re-gassing, but the condensers have been protected by the mesh in the lower grill.

History and Paperwork

Recent work on this Carrera S includes new brake discs and pads all round, drop links and some new sensors, in triple black with some nice specifications like the seats and sunroof, this car is well worth a good look.

John has a folder with many receipts in it over the cars history as well as MOT and service history. In the summer of 2021 the car received a major service and new engine mounts, and a bore score inspection was carried out too which came back clear.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi John. Sorry another question as this could be my first 911. Once invoice said the car had to be recovered by the AA was this because of the engine mounts or another issue?

Hi John. Could I ask about the AC system please? Has it worked during your ownership? The invoice from GEO Morrison notes they carried out an AC pressure test and found a leak at the low pressure valve – was this dealt with?
