Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The 997 Turbo is one of the greatest hits of the modern era, ~475BHP delivered through to all 4 wheels.

Porsche's ability to create one of the most iconic model lines ever manufactured, makes any 911 Turbo a desirable car in anyone's book. After a slight deviation, the fifth generation, known as the 997 arrived in 2005. Representing a significant relaunch of the 911 model, the styling was universally praised which was improved further by the introduction of the Turbo. It naturally adopted the more aggressive stance of past Turbo models and was powered by a variation of the motorsports oriented Mezger 3.6-litre race-derived engine. With around ~475BHP of power being managed by two turbochargers through all four wheels, its sporting prowess was never in doubt, yet the Turbo's all-round ability made this rocket ship not only exhilarating to drive but was also civilised when it needed to be.

This 2008 late Gen 1 997 Turbo has been well specified from new, boasting the optional Sport Chrono Plus (640) package with the 5-speed Tiptronic S transmission. Finished in black, with a full black leather interior, it has covered a modest ~35,000 miles from new. Full Porsche Centre service history from new and the useful addition of an upgraded media system, if you're in the market for the flagship 911, take a good look at this.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Miguel the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The perfect mix of a Grand Tourer and a sports car, I've been so happy with it.

Miguel is well versed in all matters Porsche, and fully understands the machine he chose to drive across the continent just for pleasure. Having done his 911 research prior to buying the car four years ago, he opted for a 997 Turbo, as it offered the right balance between passion, practicality and purpose.

He tells us, with great regret, that "I'm selling the car as i'm taking a sabbatical from work, and it really deserves to be driven rather than just stored away". He concludes that it is a tough decision, particularly in view of its low mileage and perfect history but he knows it won’t be the last Porsche he’ll own. Miguel will be on hand to answer any question about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Back to those tell tale front headlights, the 997 was a return to form for the design team at Porsche.

Wheels and Tyres

The 19" alloys are in very good condition, with only a few minor marks noted on the front items.

All four Pirelli P-Zero tyres are in good shape, the front items date from 2016 the rears being recent fittings. All have well above the legal tread. View the images to see the detail.

Bodywork

With the wide-body design accommodating the wider track also used on the AWD models, other tweaks like the rear wing and air intakes give the Turbo that extra special presense.

The panel fit is Porsche-perfect, with no issue with the opening and closing of the doors. The bumpers hang well, with no significant signs of damage. There are no concerns in regards to the structure, with no signs of scuffs or blemishes on the metalwork. The only point to mention is a scuff to the offside bottom of the front plastic trim where it has likely caught the floor on a ramp/slope.

Paint

Finished in the ever popular Porsche colour of "Basalt Black", what better colour for a 911 Turbo? The finish is even with no significant blemishes. There are some minor marks noted on the nose and the odd mark on the paintwork, but it has clearly been well looked after. A professional mop and polish would likely remove the inevitable swirl marks that you might see on a black car like this.

Glass and Trim

No issues were noted in terms of the condition of the glass, including the top-tinted windscreen, trim or exterior fittings. All are well presented, including the lights, lenses and trim.

View the photo gallery and video footage to see the detail.

Interior

Porsche keeps their cabins classy, the 997 felt like a real step-up in terms of quality and finish compared to the 996.

Seats and Carpets

The factory fitted black heated sports seats are in good condition, with no signs of damage to the leather, in line with the low mileage on this 997 Turbo. They have two way electric adjustment, and a small point to note is the plastics show a little wear in places.

The carpets and mats are good and are bone dry. They don't show any significant signs of wear, still looking to have a deep pile and retaining their colour.

Dashboard

The leather padded dashboard is in good shape with no damage noted from our view. There is an odd mark noted on the plastics but the stitching and fit retain the expected quality.

All of the functions work, with no major issues in regards to the condition of the dials, controls, switches or buttons. The current owner has fitted a Kenwood 7” AV-Receiver with Bluetooth & Smartphone Control (the original unit comes with the car). The door cards are in good shape, with some minor marks noted on the door thresholds.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The multifunction leather steering wheel is in good shape, with no damage. The Tiptronic buttons are fully functional. The gear selector reflects the low mileage of the car and is clean.

Mechanics

Lighter than its predecessor due to key aluminium components, a Turbo like this one can hit 60MPH in ~3.7 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

The record of servicing should convey the attention that the engine has received over its lifetime, and there are no reported issues with its function. The car starts up instantly with no smoke or blowing from the exhaust. It idles evenly with no spluttering.

The gearbox is said to perform faultlessly. No fluid leaks were observed, and the engine ticked over with no unwanted grinding or tapping. There was no evidence of engine or oil issues on the short drive, with nothing flagged up on the dashboard at any point to cause concern.

Suspension and Brakes

There were no reported issues with the running gear, the suspension was firm but not uncomfortably so. As a result, the ride comfort is surprisingly good.

No untoward noises or creaking were observed as the car negotiated the speed ramps. The brakes were not tested in anger, but were fully compliant around town and did not cause any drama.

The Drive

As the grandest of sports tourers, the 911 Turbo is up there with the best, but with the numerous driver aids in conjunction with the slick Tiptronic 5-speed gearbox, the park assist, assisted steering and brakes showed the car to be docile enough for urban use.

Sadly we were denied the opportunity to hear the flat-six sing on the open road, as the 911 Turbo becomes a very focused machine, remember, many say the 911 really can do it all.

Electrics and Other

Coming with the Sport Chrono Plus option, as well as sunroof, all perform and operate with utter reliability. There is also park assist, seat heating, and the car is optioned with the multi-function steering wheel with Tiptronic control buttons.

History and Paperwork

Full Porsche Centre service history, low mileage, black over black colourway and just 4 former keepers, this 911 Turbo (997) is a smart choice if you're in the market.

The car comes with full-service history at each of the previous owners' respective Porsche agents, with no outstanding repairs or malfunctions noted in the paperwork.

Bought by the current owner in 2018 from a sports car specialist, Miguel then took the car to a Porsche agent who issued a condition report in 2018, which didn't flag up any pressing issues. During his ownership, the car has seen some epic continental journeys but is rarely used for the London grind and has been kept in private storage. The last big bill was for a major service late in 2020, at the cost of almost £2,900. It comes with an MOT to July 2020.
