Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

The pinnacle of classic Bentleys, the Turbo R is the ultimate luxury carriage.

When first unveiled in 1985, Bentley had re-established itself as the maker of fast, comfortable and sporty turbo saloons. An ideal solution to encourage the chauffeur to take the day off, and hand the keys over to the owner, the evolution of the original Mulsanne into the finely tuned Turbo R. Focusing on the car's suspension, followed by fuel injection, it paved the way for a whole new generation of fast and fabulous saloons.

The Turbo R turned out to be the most successful Bentley of its era, and one of the quickest, outgunning certain Ferraris and Porsches in the process. Yet it provided far more comfort, practicality and space than any other high-performance sports car. The unmatched comfort was enhanced by the beautiful workmanship, upscale materials and a sumptuous cabin experience. But there was a caveat; when it was new, you’d have to pay for this decadent experience, and it was priced as one of the most expensive cars on sale in the world.

Roll on to today, and the virtues of the Bentley Turbo R still hold firm. Still able to maintain a quick pace off the lights, the cabin retains its allure, and its classic understated styling has now taken on a timeless appeal. With a vast number of independent specialists to keep the Turbo R on the roads, there has never been a better time to buy one of the most distinguished turbocharged saloons of its era.

Coming to market, this 1993 Bentley Turbo R is finished in 'Diamond Graphite' with Gold Metallic pinstripes and a 'Parchment' leather interior. It has an impressive service record, with 25 stamps in its book. With just 4 previous owners, it comes with its owner's wallet, factory order forms, and a recent aircon upgrade.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Turbo R rewards you with fantastic luxury and a superb driving experience.

Peter has a long connection with Bentleys, having owned several in his illustrious motoring past. He has a keen interest in connoisseur classic sports cars and is a former participant in historic motorsports, but these days Peter prefers the poise and power of the Turbo R.

Only buying the car in April of 2025, he was impressed by the service history, positive maintenance and low number of owners of the Bentley, but he has recently come across another Bentley R in his preferred colour and has decided that this one needs to find a new home.

Peter will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

This well-preserved example has a few blemishes, but presents positively.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15” aluminium alloy wheels are in good shape with mild signs of age on some of the rims, but above the expectations for a car of this age.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Avon Turbospeed tyres showing a spec of 255/65 - there are no date coding marks on them, so we have to assume they are older than 20 years. All have fractures on the sidewalls, but show plenty of even and legal thread, with no advisory notices on the current MOT.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Bentley and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

Bodywork

The exterior of the car presents well, with no dents and a positive panel flow with even shut lines. All doors open and close with minimal effort.

The car has bubbles emerging under the paintwork, with small areas around the door handles, tops of the C-pillars, base of the rear screen, the shoulder of the offside rear door and the bonnet edge showing blemishes. Reactive corrosion was noted on the base of the offside rear arch and sill, around the boot emblem and boot edge and lower nearside front wing. These do not distract from the Bentley's overall smart appearance, but will need attention in the future.

The underside of the car looks solid. Both the engine bay and boot floor look good too. The lowest edge of the sills and the base of the rear wing panels show minor corrosion.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The appealing 'Diamond Graphite' colour suits the car's lines well and enhance the handsome proportions of the Turbo R. The panels are free of scuffs or marks, and the paint coverage is consistent, with a positive lustre.

There are a few minor blemishes across the body noted; the offside sill, area around the passenger door mirror, and rear wing have minor lacquer wear. The nose has a light peppering of road wear.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals are all in good shape - the lights and lenses are clean, with just a minor fracture spotted on the offside front indicator lens.

The trim and brightwork are in good shape, all well-mounted and flush to the body.

The bumpers are in good condition - the front nearside corner of the bumper trim is slightly proud of the body, and the offside corner trim shows a blemish under the trim.

Interior

Well-kept and lavished in quality - some routine leather treatment could improve the appearance.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished in 'Parchment' leather hide and are free of significant damage. The driver's seat shows mild discolouration and bolster wear, along with the usual age-related creases, but could be resolved by a specialist. The rest of the seats are in good shape, with some mild piping wear.

The carpets are in good shape - the driver's side rear footwell mat is discoloured, but all are bone dry.

Dashboard

The dashboard presents positively, with mild wear noted on the driver's side padding. The burr walnut facia is clean, with no issues with the switchgear, dials or controls.

Peter confirms all functions work, as they should.

The trim is in decent order, with wear noted on the driver's door card and centre armrest.

The headlining is clean, and the boot shows careful use.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition, with mild signs of age spotted on the gear knob.

Mechanics

The ultimate 1990s luxury express - the Turbo R still impresses with its refinement and composure on the road.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start was a straightforward process, there was no issues with the engine, exhaust or dashboard warning lights. The engine idled smoothly, with no undulations or unwanted noises. The exhaust condensation smoke cleared up as the engine warmed up.

The engine is cleanly presented, backed up by a good record of maintenance, with cosmetic paint loss noted on some metal components. The hoses and ancillaries are in good shape.

The gearbox operates smoothly, engaging drives with no slippage and a seamless kickdown.

Suspension and Brakes

The car rides evenly, with no unwanted noises heard coming through the wheels. It absorbs the road conditions well at low speeds.

Peter has not reported any issues with the hydraulic suspension.

The braking performance is positive, with no judders or pulling noted from the steering wheel.

The Drive

Powered by the formidable 6.75-litre turbocharged V8 engine, it’s known for its potent power delivery and impressive acceleration. Silky and smooth, the Bentley also provides remarkable balance on the road. The Turbo R engine utilises proven technology, making maintenance and upkeep comparatively straightforward compared to post-VW era models.

Refinement and composure are the first things that come to mind when we were treated to a brief drive in the Turbo R. We had to keep the drive relatively short, but what we experienced was all positive, with Peter telling us that he’s been happy with the way the car drives.

The trip around town also demonstrated how positive the low-speed ride is, with no lumpiness or unwanted noises heard from the wheels. The engine was whisper-quiet, pulling smoothly with no hesitancy or untoward noises. The steering was demonstrated to operate without faults, free of play or noise.

The Active Ride Control system appears to operate without any issues on the day, managing the roads without any negative feedback. We didn’t get a chance to experience its cruising speeds, but Peter has assured us that it’s very capable of covering the miles, and he has used it on several long-distance trips. He is satisfied with the car's engine temperature and oil pressure readings - the car starts up readily when warm, and on the day we didn’t spot any fluid leaks.

Electrics and Other

We didn't test all the electrical elements of the Turbo R on the day but Peter told us, to his knowledge, everything is in working order. It has recently had a new battery fitted.

The car is fitted with an impressive option list, which includes sports seats and hide headlining.

History and Paperwork

Regularly serviced since new, the car also retains its factory order form.

First registered in late 1993, it was ordered for its first customer by Broughtons of Cheltenham. It has been owned by just 4 keepers since then, with the current owner buying the car in April 2025. Its previous owner kept it for ~16 years and was knowledgeable, ensuring it was well-maintained. Formly owned by Lord Shelton, it has 25 main dealer Bentley and Specialists stamps in its service book, with the latest being in 2023 at 142,940 miles. It has invoices going back to 2004, which cover cosmetic and mechanical work. Recent work includes an aircon upgrade and a new battery.

It comes with a copy of its factory order form, a full owner's wallet and has an MOT to October 2026.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
