Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Incredible Michelotti styling paired with sports performance and handling, the TR4 is a clear favourite among the classic community.

The Triumph TR4 was first released to the world in 1961 and production continued until 1965. The 4 was based on the chassis and drivetrain of its predecessor the TR3, but significantly restyled and modernised by the one and only; Giovanni Michelotti.

Modern features such as roll-up windows in place of the previous side screens were fitted, and an angular rear boot increased the storage capacity considerably for a sports car. The car is powered by the pushrod standard inline-four engine, with capacity is at 2.1L.

This TR4 is coming to market from 11 year ownership, used sparingly during that time for weekend trips. It's an American market car that was imported back to the UK early in its life, and had several mechanical features added such as a new unleaded head, servo brakes, Kenlow electric fan and overdrive in 3rd and 4th gears, as well as being converted to RHD. If you're in the market for a TR4 to use and enjoy, this car with a keen reserve is worth considering.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Roger the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

11 years of joyful ownership, this little TR4 has been a weekend treat.

Roger purchased this 1962 Triumph TR4 in June of 2011 as a weekend getaway car. It was originally exported to America as a LHD, a few years later was imported back to the UK and professionally converted to a RHD. Roger has an extensive history file with paperwork and receipts dating back to 1970, along with the breakdown of the restoration carried out between 1992-1999.

Roger mentions how himself and his wife loved taking it out and how it makes trips a joyful experience. The car has recently passed its MOT test with no advisories, yet is exempt along with its tax. Roger will be more than happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Some of Michelotti's finest work, curvaceous lines and classic good looks - the TR4 is ageing gorgeously.

Wheels and Tyres

15" spoke wire wheels on this TR4, they were added to the car with the restoration and really do look the part, the car originally coming with steel wheels according to the heritage certificate.

They have evidence of light pitting on the rim and spokes, they're presentable but really would benefit from some proper detailing/refurbishment. The car is fitted with Kelly tyres, all appearing in good condition with no obvious sidewall damage and a good amount of tread.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Triumph looks in good condition. We did notice a few areas where the panel gaps around the car could be improved. The car comes with its removable surrey hard top roof, which attaches with a few bolts and appears tight.

The car recently passed an MOT, and the online history is clean, occasional use and dry storage ensuring the car doesn't suffer like many classics do. We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

We believe the car is finished in it's original colour of "Spa White". On our visit, we did notice wear to the paint in the form of some small cracking on most panels, this is an older restoration after all, and with use it's easy for little nicks etc to develop.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

All presents in good condition, along with the trim on this car.

The headlight lenses look clean and clear, along with the rubber seals around the windows. The car comes with a Surrey Top as mentioned previously and pictured.

Interior

A black leather interior combined with wood burl trim creates a comfortable and classic cabin in this TR4.

Seats and Carpets

The TR4 offers leather sports seats with white piping to match the exterior. They look in good condition and have really held their shape over the years, although they are showing slight signs of wear on the bolsters.

The car is fitted with black rubber Triumph mats, and other carpeted areas look in line with the older restoration this car has received. Please view the images for a detailed look at this interior.

Dashboard

We haven't noticed any obivious signs of any cracking or damage on the wood burl dashboard, it's in line with the rest of the interior. The fascia is also as you would expect, with the instruments sitting in place with chrome bezels that look to be in good order but showing their age. The instruments are reported to be working as they should with the odometer reading ~72,388.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A Triumph steering wheel covered in black leather, it's in good used condition with signs of patina.

The original black Triumph gear shifter is also present and fits nicely in line with the rest of the interior.

Mechanics

With the perky nature of the 2.1L engine, this car is ideal for British roads and fun days out, the engine from factory could push on to a top speed of ~110MPH.

Engine and Gearbox

Featuring a Triumph TR4 2.1L engine, Roger has regularly had the car MOT'd and attended to when required. He mentions the carbs have been tuned, it did have electric ignition at one point, however, for smoother running the traditional setup has been refitted.

The engine bay looks in presentable condition, Roger reports the engine and gearbox on this example are working very nicely and the car has no known issues. When the car was restored, the engine was also rebuilt, and new head fitted which is compliant with unleaded fuel. Also, the car was fitted with overdrive. Please view the mechanical video to see the car out on the road.

Suspension and Brakes

The braking system has received the attention it requires over the years and is said to perform well with no issues, a similar story with the suspension on this car, nothing noted in the MOT history over the past 10 years and more.

The Drive

An extremely fun day to be had in one of these small sports car. The TR4 will never fail to turn heads, wherever you venture, for it's charm and character everyone loves.

Roger and his wife have enjoyed the occasional trip out in the TR4 on the weekends, covering just ~2,000 miles over the past 11 years.

Electrics and Other

Roger reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

The 4th iteration of Triumphs TR, coming with Surrey top, a large stack of history, and from 11 years ownership, this example is ready to be enjoyed on the open road.

A decent history file comes with this TR4 from its importation to the UK. The car is now MOT and tax-exempt yet comes with a fresh MOT carried out. Take a look at the history and paperwork media pack for a closer look at the restoration part details, MOTs, and heritage certificate.

Roger will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.
