Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

The last of the breed and arguably the best of the breed, these straight-sixes were a hit.

A masterstroke by Triumph to use the styling services of Karmann to facelift the outgoing TR5, upgrade the interior and carry over the powertrain. Like many open-top British sports cars, the manufacturer's focus was on the lucrative export market, where the romanticism of the visceral driving experience allowed a genuine ‘hairy chested’ sports car with a controllable sense of handling balance. Considered the last of the "proper" TR series of open-top sports cars, and often quoted as the end of the line for the traditional sports car, the TR6 was a huge success and this is one of the reasons why so many have been imported back into the UK.

Believed to have been imported from the US in the early 90s, this example has seen a conversion to RHD along with a quality restoration. US spec cars were down-tuned for local emissions, so the inclusion of twin HS6 carburettors, a sports manifold and sports exhaust along with a balanced crank has helped restore the original fire UK cars had. With around £6,000 worth of work after the initial restoration, this example not only drives well, but is almost flawless in its exterior and interior presentation.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Donal the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It makes so much more sense when driving with the hood down!

As a classic car fan, Donal had been intrigued by the prospect of open-top classic car motoring and the opportunity of making use of the ULEZ exemption. After taking a mechanic friend to view the TR6, they soon discovered that this well-restored and mechanically sound example was worth buying.

He has decided to sell the car after realising it may be just a little too raw for him after driving it from its prior owner in the North West to London. Instead, he is thinking about purchasing a more current modern classic. He will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Retaining its original factory colour, the visual presentation complements the professional restoration.

Wheels and Tyres

The Minator alloy wheels are in excellent shape and are fitted with a full set of Goodyear tyres. They are over 15 years old but display good tread with no uneven wear. View the photo gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

The structure of the car complements the evenly fitting body panels and condition. The chassis rails and suspension mounts appear solid, with no issues noted in the inner wings or floorplan. All doors open and close without obstructions, the bonnet release catch may need a minor adjustment.

Externally, we struggled to find any body flaws, with no dents or signs of age. If we were being really picky, there is a very small amount of what appears to be surface corrosion on the rear lower section of the off-side front wing.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the Triumph colour of "Royal Blue", the paint has been well applied and retains a healthy gloss with very little if any wear. The car is generally free of road chips and appears to have been well cared for over the years since restoration.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in excellent condition, with very little wear or age. They have good seals throughout. The chrome is in excellent shape, with minor signs of age in places as to be expected on a car of this age.

Also worth noting that the roof is in great condition, with cover for when it's folded down, and an optional tonneau too for when you're out and about.

Interior

The immaculate interior has been well-finished and unburdened by needless upgrades.

Seats and Carpets

This car, originally being from the USA, comes with the high backed seats with built in head rests. The vinyl seats are clean throughout, with no marks or signs of age.

The carpets are clean, and likely to have been replaced as part of the restoration. The boot appears to have hardly been used. View the gallery to see pictures of all mentioned above.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in excellent shape and a well-fitted replacement items during the restoration. The dials are fully legible and operational, with the owner confirming that everything works.

The burr laminate facia is in very good condition, with no signs of the ageing process. The centre console is clean, with no cracks, and it retains its original Motorola AM/MW radio.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Moto-Lita steering wheel compliments the facia finish and is in good shape, with no wear. The gearstick may well be the original, but again nothing of note to worry about.

Mechanics

With around £6,000 spent on the mechanical aspect after its restoration, it drives far better than the original US spec set-up!

Engine and Gearbox

The core of the invoices with this car are for the engine, which pertains to an increased state of tune, as well as a number of components to ensure that the car runs well. There is no hesitation in starting, with the engine running evenly with no spluttering, the bottom end having been rebuilt with a lightened crankshaft.

We noticed that the oil pressure was running a little high while the car was on acceleration but could be down to a sensor. There were no issues with the engine temperature at any point and no fluid leaks were noted on the day. The gearbox is fitted with overdrive and is said to function well, as expected with it being a reconditioned item.

The engine presentation was impressive and backs up the specialists' years of maintenance and upkeep.

Suspension and Brakes

Visually, the car's running gear didn't give any cause for concern which again relays back to the years of maintenance carried out by the specialists. The suspension didn't emit any loud knocks, with the steering remaining true and free of vibrations at town speed, and its brakes didn't cause any issues in terms of juddering or squeals.

The standard braking system is in line with the age of the car but again has seen plenty of attention to ensure no drama.

The Drive

The drive was characterised by the potent straight-six breathing through a tubular exhaust system, and even on the congested 30MPH roads, the experience was exhilarating.

The car really comes into its own when the hood is down, and this is exactly where the TR6 shines. The car accelerates smoothly through the gears, with no clonking heard as the owner changed down.

Electrics and Other

Supplied with a fully functioning hood, it has worn well over the years. Easy to lower and raise, it provides a good fit.

The car also has a tightly fitting tonneau, as well as a hood cover. Both are in very good shape. The car retains its US-spec side front indicators.

History and Paperwork

Undoubtedly one of the highlights of this TR6, it has been truly pampered since its rebirth, converted to RHD and given work to

Believed to have been imported into the UK from the US in 1992, it was then treated to full restoration. It was passed onto specialists TR Blitz who sold it to its last owner 9 years ago, and had continued to maintain the car over that period.

As a result, it comes with an impressive array of invoices, including a bottom-end engine rebuild, HS6 carburettors, balanced crank, sports manifold, new clutch and flywheel and fitted with a reconditioned gearbox with overdrive. Around £6000 has been spent, covering mechanical, maintenance and electrical work. The car comes with all of its MOTs since it was restored which helps to verify that it has covered just 15,000 miles over those 30 years.

The cavities within the body have been protected with a protective wax, along with an underbody underseal treatment. It comes with an MOT to March 2023, as well as its handbook and mechanical manuals.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi, did you resolve the high oil pressure issue? I note the engine looks to have been misted oil in places. Thanks
