Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

The end of an era, the TR6 marks the last of the old school TR Triumphs with its sharp chiseled exterior and fuel-injected engine.

The TR6 was built between 1968 and 1976. The first bodies were built in Liverpool, and the '6' came in as best-seller out of the entire TR range. The frame, engine, running gear, body tub, and door were very similar to the Michelotti-styled TR5, the design of the front and rear of the car was restyled by Karmann of Germany, yet rumors claim the squared-off tail design was a Michelotti prototype.

This example has been in current ownership for ~3.5 years, the previous owner had a complete restoration carried out to the sum of ~£20,000 and finished to a very high standard you see the car in today. The car looks great in its "Delft" paintwork, and has been dry stored and used sparingly in the current ownership.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Barry the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

One of my childhood dreams was to own a TR6, and here I am today, what an incredible car to drive.

Barry remembers a family friend owning a red TR6 in his youth, and being driven around town on the back parcel shelf! It was the highlight of his week when he was a kid, and a memory he wanted to relive, however this time in the driver's seat!

Having been on the lookout for a TR6 for quite some time, he found the following example recently restored by the previous owner to a very high standard and having the sum of upwards £20,000 spent on the cosmetic and mechanical work. Since purchasing the car he has enjoyed a number of enjoyable trips around the UK. Barry mentions to us "the car has no modifications and is highly original with its wheels, Triumph bumpers".

Since Barry's workload has increased, and being involved in Motorcross, he just doesn't get the time to use the TR6 and so he has now decided to part with the car after ~3.5 years. He'll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

The ultimate evolution of the old school TR, now with a modern sharp and defined shape thanks to Karmann's design team.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with original TR6 15" silver painted wheels with red TR6 caps, they look great on this example. Steel wheels rather than wire-wheels is definitely the way to go when you desire a more sport-focused look. The wheels have been refurbished in line with the restoration.

The car is fitted with Gremax Capturar tyres dated 2015, all looking in great condition. Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view of the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The biggest change to the TR6 was the design, restyled by Karmann the car now rocks a more modern streamlined look.

The bodywork looks very straight on this TR6, all the panel gaps look good, and Barry reports the car doors open and close with ease. We noticed a small imperfection on the boot lid, and the driver's door from it being blown open in the wind, but other than those areas it is a cracking example.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The car was completely repainted in its "Delft' (code 136) paint along with the restoration. The finish of the paint is to a very high standard and even in coverage, finish and colour across all the bodywork.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass and trim, on the whole are in very good condition. The chrome work shows some very light signs of pitting, and the trim looks very good around the car along with the rubber seals for the windows.

The car comes with a tonneau cover as pictured, perfect for the changeable British weather.

Interior

Exactly what you would expect from a classic British sports car, spacious and practical with a touch of luxury.

Seats and Carpets

The car has seen great care throughout its life and attention to detail during the restoration, the seats appear in excellent condition along with the carpets and mats. The door cards and convertible roof are in a similar condition with no areas of concern worth mentioning.

Please take a look at the in-depth videos for a detailed 360 tour of this sporty interior.

Dashboard

The dashboard appears in great condition with no obvious signs of cracking or wear, the switches and dials reflect the age of the car, with a few light signs of patina in places. The wood trim appears in great condition, most likely addressed in the restoration.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a wood-finished Moto-Lita steering wheel that just completes the interior and looks in excellent condition. The black gear changer nicely pairs with the steering wheel and is in good condition.

Mechanics

Featuring a very tidy engine bay, this 150BHP 2.5L straight-six is ready to take you on your next road trip.

Engine and Gearbox

The car bursts into life from cold, the 2.5L straight-six engine settling down when at temperature and we saw no obvious signs of smoke from the exhaust on our visit.

It’s fitted with a 4-speed gearbox, with overdrive in 3rd and 4th, and Barry reports the car goes through the gears with no issue when moving out of storage.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension set up for a TR6 is a semi-trailing arm-independent rear suspension.

Barry reports the car would have received new front dampers during the restoration along with a complete suspension and brake check over/refurbishment.

The Drive

One of the best sports cars on the market back in its day, the TR6 is still just as popular with it's dashing chiseled looks and mighty performance from the 2.5L straight-six. Barry tells us how he loves to take the car out for a cruise on the weekends, it's not short on power either with 150BHP to tap into.

Electrics and Other

Everything on the car works as expected, a strong start from the electric ignition, and dials that have been reconditioned throughout.

History and Paperwork

With ~£20,000 spent on the restoration, this UK RHD is a sorted example, coming to market from ~3.5 year ownership, and is ready and eager for a new owner to drive away in.

This 1974 TR6 comes with a some invoices and MOTs, most importantly a breakdown of the areas that were covered as part of the restoration in ~2015. With the bodywork tended to, a fresh professional respray and an interior refit, this car looks stunning to this day. Please take a look at the car's history in the media pack below.

During the restoration of the TR6 the following items were replaced or refurbished: Clutch master and slave cylinders, distributor cap, brake calipers, brake pad pins, brake pistons, headlights, door mirrors, wheel bearing, window mechanics, wiper blades, side and front seals (for the hood), wiper arms, pip and unions, wiper cable, webbing (hood), choke cable, wheel bolts, battery, fuel injection hose, 5x tyres, brake hoses, anti-roll bar links, boot seals, top ball joints, steering rack gaiters, front dampers, disc pads, engine hoses, oil filter, front lenses, bonnet striker, front seats, door weather strips, boot lining, battery tray, number plate lamps, aerial, rear wheel cylinder.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Good evening Barry, I was just looking at the mileage and it appears from the speedo that it’s only covered 39 miles since 2019 and only a few more since 2015.
I ask as I would wish to use the car regularly and was encouraged by the text which indicates it’s been driven to various places in Britain in your ownership?
Have I misinterpreted something please?
Regards, John

Good evening. What a lovely looking TR. may I ask when the main restoration works were carried out please? Perhaps 2015?
Also did you buy via a garage or from the previous owner please? Lastly I’ve possibly missed a reference but wonder3d whereabouts you are located? Thank you Alan
