Introduction

Kulraj Salh
COO

One of Giovanni Michelotti's great masterpieces - The Triumph Stag, powered by a 3.0L V8 with 145BHP and a top speed of 118MPH.

The Triumph Stag is a 2+2 sports tourer produced between 1970 and 1978 by the British Triumph Motor Company. Not only does this car sound great with its 3.0L V8 it also has beautiful Italian design touches.

Within the space of a few short years, the Stag picked up a cult following, which remains today a stalwart when it comes to British classic cars.

This particular Stag has been under the careful ownership of Kosta for the last 5 years, it features a 4-speed manual gear box with overdrive.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Kulraj after meeting Kosta the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A proud Triumph Stag owner and fanboy, Kosta has really enjoyed his ownership.

Kosta has owned this Stag for the past 5 years and enjoyed every second. He really enjoys using the car regularly on the weekend. As you can see from the paperwork section, the car has been given attention when it's required. With house renovations taking a priority, the car is being sold to fund some important work for Kosta and his family.

Kosta assures us mechanically the car runs really smooth and sound, and this can be seen in the exterior video. The car would benefit from a little TLC cosmetically to improve it, a great project to take on for the current climate. Personally, Kosta chose to leave the car as it is, so that it didn't give him too much stress when it came to finding parking spaces etc on trips out. He will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

Sharp Italian body lines finished in a vibrant red - this is a real head-turner.

Wheels and Tyres

Factory Stag 5 spoke alloys are fitted on this, the classic star style looks great on this car. The wheels have aged little places yet still, look great as you can see in the photos.

Each tyre looks to have plenty of tread left for the new owner to really enjoy this classic. Please see the photos and videos for a closer look at the tyres.

Bodywork

Beautiful Italian styling by Giovanni Michelotti and finished in a vibrant Triumph colour of Pimento Red with black decals.

Generally speaking the car looks to be solid, we noticed some small areas of corrosion on the door bottoms but otherwise the car looks good. The doors could be adjusted for a better fit, along with the boot, but as they don't let water it Kosta has chosen to leave them as is over his ownership. Over and above maintenance, for him ownership has been about enjoying the car rather than fettling.

The car comes with the hard top, although Kosta has never used it and always kept it in storage mentioning that it is in need of refurbishment.

Paint

Finished in a vibrant Pimento Red the paint looks really good on this example. It even in finish and coat on each panel and really shines.

You'll see a chip on the front leading edge of the bonnet, and the odd nick on the door edges etc but generally the paintwork does look good on this. The car would benefit from some TLC from the new owner to take it a level up in terms of condition. Please take a look at the images to really appreciate the car from every angle.

Glass and Trim

The glass and trim are inline with the rest the age and mileage, in good condition, all the brightwork looks good and the glass looks chip/crack free.

The chrome bumpers really scream American '70s and we love that. Some of the trim like the decals could do with renewal, along with one of the Stag badges loosing its laminate covering. Please take a look at all the exterior photos.

Interior

Beautiful and practical, the Stag offers enough room for all the family and luggage allowing you to travel in style and comfort.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are finished in black leather on this example, perfect for use when the roof is down. The leather has slight creases and wear to the bolsters, and they look like they could benefit from being re-foamed. However, no major tears in the leather on the seat bottoms etc. It is believed from the discussions Kosta has had with the Triumph Stag owners club, that the car was fitted with leather from new.

The carpets are also black with deep pile, the door cards look good on this example but are in need of better fitment. With some minor attention, we have no doubt this interior can look excellent.

Dashboard

The Dashboard is finished in a lovely wood which looks great, the dials are suffering from some condensation and therefore have fog in each dial due to the very cold day.

All the chrome bezels look good and the digits on the dial look clean and readable.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Triumph Stag steering wheel and 4 speed manual with overdrive gear stick can be found here. Both are in lovely condition and inline with the age and mileage of the car.

Please see the photos for a tour of the interior.

Mechanics

This galloping Stag packs a punch with it's 3.0L V8 power-plant, ready to charge at any moment.

Engine and Gearbox

Featuring the Triumph V8 3.0L powerplant, this engine provides all the grunt you need for the chassis. Kosta assures us the engine is running very smoothly and has no overheating issues, having ensure typical upgrades like the radiator and header tank were actioned.

Please watch the exterior video to see and hear the engine running smoothly. This car is fitted with overdrive, making those long drives a little more comfortable, this is a factory option as confirmed by the build data.

Suspension and Brakes

Kosta reports the brakes are working very well and just as you'd expect. The suspension feels good too, no unusual knocks or noises were noticed.

Please view the mechanical photos for a closer look at the underneath of this car.

The Drive

With 3.0L of power at your disposal, the world is your oyster. The Stag offers wind-through-hair motoring with enough room for all your luggage as well.

A Triumph Stag is a pretty rare sight on the roads today and is bound to draw a lot of attention, as it did on the quick photo shoot by the park.

Electrics and Other

Fairly basic electrics in this '70s sports car as you would expect. The car looks to be featuring a period-correct radio which matches the interior very well.

The heater will keep you warm during the winter, and you'll probably always have the top down during your summer road trips to enjoy that wind hair through experience.

History and Paperwork

Coming out of 5 years of loving ownership, Kosta will be sad to see the Stag go, yet looks forward to seeing someone enjoy the car as much as he has.

After 5 years of ownership Kosta has a good track record of all the work carried out on this car. The Triumph stag is exempt from road tax and MOT requirements. It's a really lovely example with low mileage and overdrive, that will make the perfect base for a light cosmetic refurbishment to take it to the next level.

Another fun fact Kosta told us, it is believed this car was once owned by Idi Amins wife in London.

I bought the car 5 years ago but before I bought it I contacted the stag owners club for info. They knew the car and informed me that the previous owner was selling all his classics due to his wife’s death. They also informed me that the leather seats were ordered from new and the the previous owner had told them that the car had been owned by Idi Amin’s wife. I have only driven the car in dry weather and only clocked up 1500 miles. I had a 4 core uprated radiator and a header tank fitted, rear seat… Read more »

Hi, is that paint peeling from the bonnet? Also there appears to be a fair amount of rust to the bottom of the doors and around the rear sills. Unfortunately the guy with the video camera doesn’t concentrate on those areas. Thanks

Hi, the paint peeling is from the hard top. There is only a small chip of paint on the front end of the drivers side bonnet. Which is shown on the photo. The bottom of doors has bubbled paint but doesn’t appear to have holes.

Hi
Is there any chance we could see a picture of the hardtop so we know what is needed to restore it?
