Introduction

A fully refurbished chassis, rebuilt engine, and rebuilt diff - look no further than my 1994 Griff 500! I've owned it for a very happy ~4k miles. This car has had very devoted owners, as evidenced by many thousands spent in the past few years alone.

1990 was TVR's "New Beginning", and the Griffith was revealed at the Birmingham Motor Show, where it was a show stopper. It was reported at the time that an order was taken every 8 minutes.

From 1991 to 1993, the chassis was re-engineered to enable it to cope with high power levels. The first delivery of the two engine specs were a 4.0-litre producing 240BHP, and a 4.3-litre which produced 280BHP. If that wasn't enough, there were some BV “Big Valve" conversions made. For the totally insane, a 4.5-litre was produced.

In 1993, it was announced that the Griffith 500 was to be produced, which would be the 5.0 litre V8 producing 340BHP and 350 ft-lb torque. It would also feature upgraded brakes and suspension and be fitted with catalytic convertors. In ‘94, TVR changed from using the Rover to the much stronger Borg Warner T5 gearboxes. The engine was then de-tuned in ‘97 to 320 BHP to aid better driving at lower speeds.

This ‘94 car benefits from the highest power and strongest gearbox - THE model of Griffith to have.

I've spent a fantastic few summers with this grin-inducing 2-seater sports car, both driving and maintaining it. But it's now time to move onto something new.

It's worth noting at this point that biggest jobs you can find on a Griffith have all been completed. This car benefits from a complete engine rebuild (35k miles ago), body-off chassis restoration (10k miles ago), replacement outriggers (10k miles ago), totally re-bushed suspension (5k miles ago) and plenty more.

This listing was written from information supplied by XXXXX after meeting XXXXX the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

My Griffith comes in a beautiful shade of deep metallic Avus blue, which complements the cream interior very well. Uprated Nitron coilovers give a great stance and ride height. Brand new Toyo Proxes on grey wheels finish it off nicely.

Wheels and Tyres

I've just put the car on 4x brand new Toyo Proxes RT1 tyres (so recently that they don’t feature on the beauty shots!). These are excellent, premium tyres that stick very well indeed and have the 'right' looking tread pattern.

The wheels have been refurbished in the past few years and still present well. There's the odd small mark on one or two of the wheels and centre caps, but no damage.

image

Bodywork

We all know, the underside of a TVR is the most important side...

This example benefits from a full, body-off chassis and outriggers repair/replacement less than 10k miles ago, which has been protected and powdercoated in white. Please see photos - it's top notch. Buying a car with a chassis and outriggers that needed none of my time & money was the main reason I bought this example. You can be assured of the same.

The roof is also in very good condition - no visible fading to the blue colour - and it seals well with no leaks or wind noise.

Note, there is a small split in the fibreglass in the lower valance under the nose. This should only need a small fill and localised repaint if desired.

The appropriate "L300 GRF" number plate, as pictured, is included with the car.

image

Paint

The paint presents well across the car. It's a lovely shade of deep (Avus) blue that can appear in a purple hue in low light. I believe that it's original, with no documented resprays in its life.

There is a small scratch that looks to have been touched up on the O/S/R quarter.

The paint is a great shade and looks to be original, just well cared for.

image

Glass and Trim

There's no damage to any of the glass. The rear plastic screen is also clear, with no scratches.

image

Interior

The contrast between the navy and cream is very nice indeed. The leather is all in great condition on the dash and pillars and the blue piping on the seats is an uncommon factory option that ties it together well.

Seats and Carpets

Cream leather seats with navy carpets.

There is some patina to the seats which is just some creasing and the colour has come off in a couple of places, mainly on the driver’s bolster, but this patch could easily be re-coloured by a leather specialist.

The carpet in the boot is nice and clean with the original spare wheel colour matched to the wheels.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is in very good condition.

The only imperfection is a very small scuff in the leather to the bottom left of the aluminium fascia.

The dash fascia itself has been replaced at some point in its life with the alumium that you see here. At the same time, all of the previously black plastic buttons and knobs were replaced for a metal units from Leven.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Original fitment TVR/Personal steering wheel with no imperfections. The gear knob is the TVR billet aluminium which I fitted from NOS only last year and so unmarked from any wedding ring scratches over the years.

image

Mechanics

If it's oily, it's been rebuilt on this car!

Evidenced engine/complete chassis & outriggers/diff rebuilds. All of the high £££ jobs have been completed.

Engine and Gearbox

Full engine rebuild 35k miles ago means this is one of the strongest and most reliable Griffiths for sale.

Details of engine rebuild:
- Relined block
- Acid dip
- Piston rings and big end shells
- V8 Developments MC1 sports camshaft and new lifters
- Polished crank

In the past few years I've also replaced the distributor cap, HT leads, oil pressure switch, ignition amplifier module, alternator, rocker cover gaskets and added carbon sheathes to the spark plugs to prolong their lives.

image

Suspension and Brakes

Suspension: Fully adjustable for damping/ride height Nitron sports coilovers were fitted at quite the cost. These make a great upgrade to even the Gaz dampers commonly fitted to Griffiths.

In the last 5k miles this examples has also benefitted from a re-bush all the way around the suspension (x16) and you really can feel how well the suspension holds together.

The track rod ends were also replaced in 2024.

Brakes: ATE/Pagid front discs and pads fitted in 2024 with braided brake lines all the way around. The car brakes straight and strong.

And a quick reminder on the tyres: I changed all 4x tyres for new Toyo Proxes after the photos of the wheels were uploaded to Trade Classics. There's now premium, brand new rubber on each corner.

image

The Drive

You can tell this car has been mechanically sorted. It pulls like a train in all gears. This is a very strong gear box that shifts easily with a whisper quiet differential.

I've driven plenty of Griffiths now and this truly is one of the best sorted. Nothing about the drive feels tired or wallowy: it's a very well set up car and doesn't wear its age at all on the road.

You’ll certainly hear it before you see it with the sound of the V8 thundering down the road - it really is something quite special. Especially with a book speed of 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 169 mph.

All this performance makes for a lively machine, so keep your wits about you.

image

Electrics and Other

Now, this is a TVR and it can't all be rosey. The passenger door locking solenoid can be temperamantal. It will always open from inside the cabin with the door handle, but it sometimes won't lock/unlock on the central locking fob. I've purchased a replacement solenoid which is included in the sale. It's easily accessible from an access hatch inside the car to replace.

The speedometer was professionally rebuilt a few years ago (invoice present) but it has started to go a bit lazy with its reading. I therefore imagine that it's either the cable or sender on the diff that needs a clean or replacement.

It's always best to be as honest as possible with these things - there are no other issues that I'm aware of. Please do get in contact though if you have any further questions.

image

History and Paperwork

An extensive history file shows just how much this TVR has been cherished by its owners: important chassis, engine, and suspension work make this a solid Griffith 500 coming to the market.

x17 dealer and specialist service stamps are present in the TVR service book. Please review the pictures of documentation - it's one of the most complete sets of invoices I've had with a car.

There's well over an inch of invoices going back decades and even the original sales brochure all in its TVR leather portfolio (that wears the car’s original registration number), with thousands of pounds spend evidenced and pictures of work carried out.

As mentioned earlier in the advert, a brand new door locking solenoid is included with the sale. The front registration plate is also included.

The cherished registration / number plate L300 GRF is included in the sale.

Hi, I don’t believe there is such a tyre as a Toyo RT1. It will either be the TR1 or T1R tyre (thanks for the confusion Toyo!) They are very different tyres and one is generally considered better than the other. Can you confirm which are fitted please? Cheers
