Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

A true symbol of freedom and adventure, the VW Type 2 T1 Split Screen camper embodies the spirit of the open road with its timeless design and unmistakable character.

The 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 T1 Split Screen campervan, often affectionately referred to as the “Splitty”, has a rich history that cements its place as one of the most iconic vehicles of the 20th century.

Originally derived from the Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter, which debuted in 1950, the Split Screen was Volkswagen’s answer to the growing demand for practical, multi-purpose vehicles. Its simple yet ingenious design, featuring a rear-mounted air-cooled engine and forward-control layout, offered excellent interior space and versatility.

By the early 1960s, the Split Screen had become a global phenomenon, embraced not only as a dependable workhorse for tradespeople and businesses, but also as a lifestyle vehicle for families and adventurers.

Coming to market from almost 15 years with our vendor, this example is an SO42 variant, known for its distinctive pop-top roof, high-quality wood cabinetry, rock and roll bed, folding table, rear hatch, walk-through layout, and safari windows. The 1967 model year is particularly sought after, as it marked the final year of German split-screen production.

The van has been lowered to allow it to fit into a standard garage while retaining its roof rack. David has fitted a 1641cc air-cooled engine, along with a SCAT C25 camshaft, balanced cooling fan, and twin Weber carburettors. The van comes with a near-12-month MOT, valid until 12.04.2027.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A much-loved member of the family for many years, it has been enjoyed on countless journeys and memorable adventures.

David has long been part of the VW scene. In 2011, while searching for a camper, he came across this example at Old Dub Shop, shortly after it had been imported from Utah, USA. It met all his requirements, and during his ownership he has carried out various works to improve reliability and comfort, while keeping the van as original as possible. He has enjoyed travelling extensively in it, including several weeks touring around Italy.

David also owns a VW T5, which he and his family now use more frequently for trips across Europe. As the van is currently stored offsite and seeing less use, he has decided that the time is right to pass it on to a new owner who will continue to enjoy and preserve it. He will be on hand to answer any questions you have in the comments below.

Exterior

Defined by its iconic split-screen front and flowing curves, the Volkswagen Type 2 T1 is instantly recognisable; a lasting emblem of classic motoring and a carefree 60s lifestyle.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with four silver alloy wheels, which looked good at the time of consignment and reflected the sun well. The tyres are Yokohama A.drive on the front and Firestone Multihawk 2 on the rear.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

The flared wheel arches were restored to their original specification in 2011, along with the cargo doors.

The bodywork appears to be in fair-to-good overall condition, with panel gaps aligning well visually around the vehicle.

There are, however, some minor age-related marks, including light dents and scratches around the doors, rear wheel arches, and bumpers - as you would expect for a 60-year-old vehicle.

We’ve provided detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos. Please take the time to review all media files to assess the condition for yourself.

Paint

Finished in ‘Pearl White/Perlweiss’ (paint code L87), the paintwork presents with generally even colour and coverage across the panels. There are a few areas that would benefit from touch-ups, as expected for a vehicle of this age. The most notable area is at the front of the van, where a previously fitted fabric bra has left the paintwork slightly dulled.

Once again, we've captured high-resolution images and videos of the van for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition for the vehicle’s age. The window seals appear in good order and consistent with the overall condition of the van, while the door handles and window surrounds also present well.

David reports that the jalousie windows and glass are all original and include the full set of flyscreens. Original curtain rails are fitted, along with a complete set of reversible curtains, and a new pop-top canvas was installed in 2012.

A stainless steel sun visor is fitted, along with chrome headlight brows and a Klaxon horn.

The front windows have been retrofitted with safari openings, improving ventilation and comfort on longer journeys. The van is also equipped with a Creative Engineering stainless steel Westfalia-style roof rack.

Interior

Simple, practical, and rich in character, creating a space that makes every trip feel like an occasion.

Seats and Carpets

The white vinyl seat covers with blue piping have retained their shape well over the years, they are the original seats underneath the covers and are in good condition. There are some light creases, as expected with use, reflecting the careful way in which the vehicle has been maintained.

It is fitted with its original 1967 Westfalia walkthrough SO42 interior, along with the original Westfalia stool, cooler, a working water tap, and the walkthrough 'buddy seat'.

For a detailed view of the cabin, please refer to the extensive media.

Dashboard

The dashboard shows no major damage or scuffs, and no warning lights were displayed during our visit.

The odometer read ~53,830 miles at the time of inspection. David reports that an array of additional gauges has been fitted for long-distance touring, including oil pressure, rev counter, temperature, and clock. The rev counter and oil pressure gauge are not yet wired in. He also notes that the petrol gauge can fluctuate and may require attention.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The white steering wheel and the manual gear stick present in good condition.

For a closer look, check out the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

Powered by a dependable air-cooled flat-four engine, this camper offers relaxed, easy-going performance perfectly suited to scenic cruising.

Engine and Gearbox

David reports that he purchased the vehicle with a 1500cc engine, which was not original to the van and had some end float movement. This was subsequently replaced with a 1641cc engine, fitted with a SCAT C25 camshaft and a balanced cooling fan. It is also equipped with twin Weber carburettors. At the same time as the engine replacement, the clutch and thrust bearing were also replaced. David reports that the van retains its original reduction boxes, which provide increased torque but limit top speed.

On the day of our visit, we started the vehicle from cold and it performed well on the road, pulling strongly, idling smoothly, and running as expected.

David reports that the vehicle drives well, with the manual gearbox transferring power smoothly to the wheels.

Suspension and Brakes

In 2011, David had the VW lowered to allow it to fit into a standard garage without removing the roof rack. More recently, the brakes have been refurbished with new cylinders all round, along with an oil service.

The suspension appears to be in good condition, providing a composed ride on country roads. The brakes perform well, bringing the vehicle to a confident stop.

During our drive, it felt exactly as you would expect from a well-maintained and mechanically restored campervan of this era.

The Drive

The campervan is a delightful space to enjoy, whether cruising comfortably in its supportive seats or relaxing in the cosy living area.

As is typical for a Type 2, driving is traditional: it does not feature power steering. However, given its comfortable cruising speed, this remains a charming period characteristic, not a flaw.

Electrics and Other

Fitted at the front is a Bluetooth radio and CD player, neatly positioned lower in the dash to retain the original radio in view. David also notes that the vehicle did not originally have door cards, so new ones have been made to accommodate a speaker setup and tweeters.

David reports that the leisure battery will require attention. The interior electrics are all wired to operate via the leisure battery, and a hookup is fitted along with a coaxial aerial.

We did not test all electrical systems during our visit, but David reports that everything is functional and operational, consistent with the overall condition of the vehicle.

History and Paperwork

Featuring an uprated engine, lowered suspension, and camper amenities, this Type 2 T1 has been garage stored and is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.

This Type 2 T1 camper remains largely original, retaining its SO42 Westfalia walk-through layout.

Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports, servicing, and parts this split-screen Camper has received over its life. The van comes with a near-12-month MOT, valid until 12.04.2027.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the van has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the van based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the van in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the van - just like a traditional auction house.
