Introduction
Jacob Boodrie
A true symbol of freedom and adventure, the VW Type 2 T1 Split Screen camper embodies the spirit of the open road with its timeless design and unmistakable character.
The 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 T1 Split Screen campervan, often affectionately referred to as the “Splitty”, has a rich history that cements its place as one of the most iconic vehicles of the 20th century.
Originally derived from the Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter, which debuted in 1950, the Split Screen was Volkswagen’s answer to the growing demand for practical, multi-purpose vehicles. Its simple yet ingenious design, featuring a rear-mounted air-cooled engine and forward-control layout, offered excellent interior space and versatility.
By the early 1960s, the Split Screen had become a global phenomenon, embraced not only as a dependable workhorse for tradespeople and businesses, but also as a lifestyle vehicle for families and adventurers.
Coming to market from almost 15 years with our vendor, this example is an SO42 variant, known for its distinctive pop-top roof, high-quality wood cabinetry, rock and roll bed, folding table, rear hatch, walk-through layout, and safari windows. The 1967 model year is particularly sought after, as it marked the final year of German split-screen production.
The van has been lowered to allow it to fit into a standard garage while retaining its roof rack. David has fitted a 1641cc air-cooled engine, along with a SCAT C25 camshaft, balanced cooling fan, and twin Weber carburettors. The van comes with a near-12-month MOT, valid until 12.04.2027.
This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Watching the video, engine number can be seen on the engine and recorded on the V5c ? The original chassis number etched in the engine tinware next to the RHS battery ?
Regards
Hi there, I just tried the m-code decoder site and it all worked fine. I put in the numbers from the entire plate and it comes up with all the options that were chosen. The chassis number is there and is correct. You have however made me realise that the old engine number is on the V5c and not the new one. This can be rectified at the point of sale when the V5c is sent off. If it doesn’t sell this week I will do it anyway. I just don’t want the V5c to be tied up at DVLA if the buyer wants to pick the van up this weekend.
Apologies for timing of reply but I’m on nights. Happy for you to have my phone number if you need to chat. Let me know.
Regards
Dave

Here’s a picture of the M Plate that David has supplied to us https://www.tradeclassics.com/auctions/vw/1967-volkswagen-type-2-t1-campervan-split-screen-so42/#gallery4-27
Hi Matt
You raise a good point. I went today to the storage facility and photographed the M Plate. I will ask the team if it is ok to add it to the photographs. In the meantime I checked the information on the M Plate and can confirm it is an SO42 model with USA spec. Production started in October 1966 and completed in 1967 and exported via Calcutta to the USA.
regards
Dave
