Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The desirable run-out model of the legendary Golf GTI cabriolet

The VW Golf, an enduring icon among 'hot-hatches', has consistently delighted enthusiasts with its diverse variants. The introduction of the Golf GTI Convertible in 1980, crafted by Karmann, eliminated the need for drivers to compromise between open-air motoring and hatchback comfort. These convertibles seamlessly blended exhilarating drives with an open cabin experience, epitomising versatile enjoyment in any weather. The Golf GTI Rivage, a swansong for the legendary Mk1 GTI Convertible, further elevated the allure of this model. Adorned with Recaro cloth seats, Le Castellet forged alloy wheels, a powered mohair hood, and a five-speed manual gearbox - the Rivage transcended the ordinary.

This car comes to market after ~3 years with our vendor, it has an interesting past too, having been owned for several years by Car SOS star Tim Shaw, who had the exterior restoration carried out whilst it was in his collection.

The car comes with a current MOT valid until 21.09.2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Lois the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It was a great chance to own a vehicle from a celebrity's private collection.

Purchased three years ago after meeting Tim Shaw whilst carrying out some work at his property, Lois and her husband Neil got talking to Tim about cars, as you do, and that ended up in a discussion to buy this lovely 1992 Golf GTI Rivage, which was being let go from the collection.

While the car has been an enormous pleasure to own, Neil and Lois haven’t really used the car in the past three years, as you will see from the MOT history. Quite simply, the car has been used to take for an MOT and, pretty much other than that, it has been driven out of the garage to run and be given a regular clean and polish. The lack of use is the reason for the sale.

Lois will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

A full body kit, power roof and two colour choices were given to the GTI Rivage.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the factory Le Castellet wheels, these are in fantastic condition, having been refurbished when the car was repainted.

The tyres are a matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport 3s, which are in like-new condition and still have the small nobbles you see on new tyres.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

Walking around the GTI, the bodywork looks to be in excellent condition, with no dings or dents spotted, and the panel gaps appear to be visually equal and matching.

The factory colour-coded bodykit fits well, with no distortion to the side sills or wheel arches.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in 'Classic Blue Metallic', the paintwork on the car is excellent, thanks to a refresh whilst in Tim Shaw's ownership. There are a couple of very minor blemishes and a small amount of microblistering on the passenger-side rear bumper, but this is very minor.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windows appear to be in good condition, with no noticeable signs of excessive scratches. Also, the seals look in good order, with no perishing spotted.

A new blue fabric roof was fitted when the car was repainted - this is in excellent condition and operates correctly, rising and lowering.

image

Interior

A lovely cream leather trim graces the interior of the desirable Rivage.

Seats and Carpets

The full leather front and rear seats are in very good condition; there is a tiny amount of discolouration if we're being picky, but nothing that jumps out. Both door cards are in good condition with no damage to mention.

There is a beige carpet fitted, in excellent condition and very clean, showing no signs of age; it could have been replaced at some point.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition, with no damage that we could see.

The instruments are working as you would expect, and the odometer shows that ~156,020 miles have been enjoyed in this classic VW cabriolet.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with a classic four-spoke VW steering wheel, this has minor signs of age, as does the golf ball gear stick.

image

Mechanics

The 1.8-litre GTI engine is a great unit, producing ~112bhp, capable enough for the Mk1 Golf chassis.

Engine and Gearbox

With a flick of the key, the fuel-injected Golf GTI engine fires up without hesitation and comes to a smooth idle, with no issues reported other than it would benefit from a good run.

The five-speed gearbox has a smooth change, and the gears can be easily selected.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the GTI handles as you would expect, a firm feel without being harsh, and no knocks or bangs were heard as we drove through the village, where there were a number of speed humps.

The brakes bring the car to a stop in a straight line, and with a solid feel to the pedal.

image

The Drive

Capturing the charm of an early 90s hot hatch, the Golf GTI Rivage is a fantastic handling car. Albeit slightly heavier than the Mk1 Golf GTI, it doesn’t disappoint on the road.

The rev-happy 1.8-litre fuel-injected engine is enough to keep you entertained for some enthusiastic driving, or you could take the more sedate route and sit back, relax in the leather-trimmed cabin, and enjoy a steady drive with the roof dropped.

image

Electrics and Other

Although we didn't test all the electrics during our visit, Lois told us that all of the switchgear is working correctly.

There is some minor wear on the lettering, and a blank is missing from the dash fascia. A Wharfdale head unit has been fitted, which sits a little proud of the fascia, possibly because it's quite tight and tricky behind there to get the wires out of the way.

image

History and Paperwork

The original handbooks, service book and a large folder compile the history for the classic cabriolet.

The paperwork that comes with the GTI is quite comprehensive; it includes several invoices collected over the years, several old MOT certificates, it has a current MOT valid until 21.09.2026, and the owner's manual and service book, as mentioned above.

As you can imagine, the Rivage model, produced in such low numbers, is becoming very hard to find nowadays, making this one an excellent opportunity for any VW enthusiast.

The exterior has been taken care of whilst in Tim Shaw’s long ownership, and the interior presents very well indeed, leaving you to just drop the roof and enjoy the fast approaching summer months in a head-turning, desirable Golf GTI Rivage.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off or does not have any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.
If you have any questions, no matter how small, please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction.

Hi Lois, nice looking GTI. In the engine bay towards the bulkhead left and right corners, but particularly the left, there is what appears to be a beige colour and what maybe rust. Could you describe what that is and the cause. If it is rust, is it superficial or deep. The engine has done a highish mileage does it use oil? Also are there any oil leaks from the engine or gearbox? Are all gears easily selected? Thanks
