This increased popularity has driven manufacturers to create higher-spec SUVs with more luxury and more performance… enter the BMW X3 M40i.

Believe it or not, the X3 has been around for the past 20 years, improved somewhat since then. This 2018 offering from BMW is not only a high-class luxury SUV, but it’s been through the M Performance division, turning it into a performance SUV being able to compete and hold its own against other manufacturers like Porsche and Mercedes.

The one owner X3 M40i has been with the vendor for five years. Ordered precisely how he wanted it, with the individual package for the interior, the well-spec'ed BMW has been a pleasure to own for all of its ~24,161 miles covered.

Exterior

The only real giveaway is the M badge - making the X3 somewhat of a sleeper in terms of what it's really capable of.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the standard 20” diamond cut faced wheels, they are in excellent condition, with just a few minor marks on two rims.

The tyres are matching Pirelli P Zero Run flat, which have a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

Looking around the BMW, the panels align as you would expect, with an equal gap, there doesn't appear to be any dings or dents, and there are no scuffs to the bumpers.

Although it was ordered as an option, we are told that the tow bar has never been used. It is a work of art when unfolding, ready for use at the touch of a button and retracting out of sight when not in use.

Paint

Finished in Sophisto-Grau Brilliant metallic (Dark Graphite Metallic), the paintwork presents itself very well. There is the odd tiny stone chip on the front bumper and the bonnet's leading edge, but nothing out of the ordinary for the mileage covered.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are in excellent condition with no scratches to mention.

The car's rear half has privacy glass, and the BMW was also ordered with a panoramic roof.

Adaptive LED headlights are fitted and have no chips to the lenses; the fog lights are also LED and have no damage.

Interior

Individual colour option leather - the choice was the fantastic Fiona Red and black leather with piano black trim.

Seats and Carpets

The electric and heated sports seats are finished with the individual choice of Fiona Red and black leather. These are in excellent condition, with no signs of wear to the bolsters. The rear seat is also excellent, as are the matching door cards.

The carpets are excellent too and have been kept that way with a set of factory-fit all-weather X3 mats to protect them. Inside the boot is clean and tidy and is fitted with a load liner to match the floor mats, which helps keep the carpet spotless. The roller shelf pulls out and retracts as you would expect.

Dashboard

The black leather dashboard matches the door card tops and has more piano black trim, which is all in excellent condition. The instruments show a reading of ~24,161 miles at the time of our visit, and no warning lights were displayed when the X3 was running.

There is a head-up display directly in front of you to save you from taking your eyes off the road.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the optional multi-function leather steering wheel, this is in excellent condition, having covered just over ~24,000 miles, and there are paddle shifters to the rear if you wish to change gear with these.

The gearstick is in good order, with no signs of excessive scratches to the piano black finish.

Mechanics

3.0 litre turbo develops 355bhp and 369lb-ft of torque, capable of launching you from 0-62mph in just ~4.8 seconds.

Engine and Gearbox

The six-cylinder turbocharged engine fires up without hesitation. Performance comes in quickly and sounds fantastic through the M Performance exhaust system, enhanced even further when in sport mode by opening a flap inside the exhaust to create a far more vocal sound from the M40i.

The automatic eight-speed transmission is silky smooth as it changes effortlessly through the gears, or the paddle shifters can be used for those who prefer the sportier driving style.

Suspension and Brakes

The X3 M Performance suspension is slightly firmer than you would find in a standard X3, but even so, it never feels too harsh. It also has adaptive damping, which, when in sport mode, becomes a little stiffer, reducing body roll and giving a weightier feel to the steering.

The brakes are excellent, as you would expect; when it comes to stopping the ~1885kg SUV, it pays to have big M Performance brakes, which tackle the task perfectly.

The Drive

On the road, the X3 M40i is a wonderful machine; smooth as an SUV should be, but with the added extra performance thanks to it being an M Performance. The X3 is great fun to drive, and it is very easy to get carried away thinking you are in a sports car rather than an SUV.

Electrics and Other

Centre stage is the brilliant 10.3” infotainment screen that allows you to access a host of incredible technology and settings for the M40i. In addition, the audio has been fitted with Harman/Kardon speakers, providing high-quality surround sound.

The switchgear is all in excellent condition and reported to be working correctly.

Most settings can be altered from the main rotary selector in the centre console.
