Few Ferraris divide opinion quite like the Dino 308 GT4, but time has been incredibly kind to Bertone’s wedge-shaped V8 grand tourer and prices have been on the rise.

What was once seen as the outlier in Ferrari’s back catalogue is now appreciated for exactly what it is; a characterful, analogue gated-manual Ferrari with unmistakable 1970s styling and a wonderfully mechanical driving experience.

This 1979 example has been with current owner David since 2020 and presents as an honest, usable classic. Finished in the iconic Red over black leather, it offers the raw and engaging feel that makes these early V8 Ferraris so appealing today.

Exterior

The Bertone-penned styling gives the 308 GT4 a completely different presence to its Pininfarina relatives, with sharp lines, compact proportions and unmistakable 1970s design cues.

Wheels and Tyres

The Dino is fitted with a matching set of Michelin tyres with a spec of 205/70R14 all round showing a date code of 2020.

Bodywork

The bodywork presents well overall with good panel fit and strong lines throughout. We noted a small scuff on the passenger-side front arch, alongside stone chipping to the front bumper area.

Paint

The red paintwork still carries a fantastic shine and gives the GT4 plenty of road presence. As expected from a usable classic Ferrari, there are some age-related marks and imperfections visible upon closer inspection.

Glass and Trim

The glass and exterior trim all appear in good order, with the chrome and black detailing presenting nicely.

Importantly, the pop-up headlights are fully operational.

Interior

Inside, the Ferrari retains its wonderfully period cabin design, complete with its angular dashboard, classic switchgear and unmistakably analogue feel.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats remain original in appearance and present well overall, though there are some age-related cracks visible within the leather as expected for a car of this age.

The carpets and interior trim remain tidy and usable.

Dashboard

The dashboard and instrument binnacle present nicely, maintaining the original layout and character of the GT4 interior. The clock read 15,224 at the time of our visit, David told us the clock has been changed in its history, when the mileage was at 24,011 so the actual mileage is 39,235.

Gauges and switchgear retain a pleasingly vintage appearance. David told us the instruments themselves, speedo and tach, require recalibration at this point, as first generation digital items never seem to be accurate.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Ferrari steering wheel and traditional open-gate-style gear selector area deliver exactly the sort of mechanical driving experience buyers look for in a classic Ferrari.

The gearbox itself has a very mechanical feel in operation, exactly as expected from the model.

Mechanics

Mechanically, the Dino appears to be a solid and enjoyable example, prioritising driving character and usability.

Engine and Gearbox

David reports the engine to be strong, with no unwanted noises present.

The gearbox also performs well, offering a satisfyingly mechanical shift action with no concerning noises noted during out visit.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has benefitted from a suspension rebuild at some point in its history.

There is some visible surface rust present on parts of the suspension and roll bars, though everything was reported to function correctly with no unwanted noises noted during our time with the car.

The brakes are also in good working condition.

The Drive

On the road, the GT4 delivers the analogue and engaging experience you would hope for from a late-1970s Ferrari, combining sharp styling with a genuinely mechanical feel from behind the wheel.

Electrics and Other

At the time of the visit we didn't test all the electrical items but David told us, to his knowledge, they all function correctly, including the pop-up headlights.

History and Paperwork

This Dino 308 GT4 appears to have been enjoyed as a usable classic Ferrari, with the focus placed more on driving and ownership enjoyment.

There is limited historical information available with the car but does have its original service book, you can see the services dated and signed but no mileages, the current ownership dates back to 2020. The car presents as an honest example with evidence of ongoing care and maintenance over time, including the previously mentioned suspension rebuild.

The clock was changed when the car was at 24,011 miles so the actual mileage is 39,235 (24,011 + 15,224).

Importantly there's an invoice for work done in 2023 including cambelt change.

We did notice the MOTs from 1992 to 2004 the car has the same mileage, so it either hasn't been used between those years or the clock may have had an issue.

There are some photos to show past bodywork and paintwork carried out.

David gave us a breakdown of what he knows about the car:

This car was sold in the UK originally -by Cooper Car Sales Co., on 28 March 1979. In its original specification it came with factory colour 'Rosso Chiaro' 20-R-190, with a black hide interior and carpets. It was also equipped with air conditioning and the Wide Wheel option.

It was lightly driven until 2008 at which time it passed into the hands of a collector and was taken off its road license as SORN until 2015. At that time it had a full dealer service history as indicated by the service book up through the 31,000 mile service . In 2015 the car was purchased and restored by the new owner. The restoration included a full respray in the original factory 'Cherry Red', recommissioning of the suspension and full service of the engine including cam belts. Pictures and receipts support the process.

He purchased the car in November 2020 by which time the speedometer had been replaced, the combined mileage of the two speedometers totalling circa 32,000 miles.
Since he has owned the car, it has been treated to an upgraded stainless steel exhaust box, new OEM spec Michelin XWX tyres, and most recently a major service which included: replacement of all cam seals; new water pump; new cam belts; re-cored the original alloy radiator; all new cooling system plumbing; new clutch cable, along with other miscellaneous bits including the installation of CMC alloy pedal covers.
He also added a near-period Nakamichi stereo but that has not yet been wired into the car.

As a result of all of this work, the car leaks no fluids of any kind, runs and sounds as it should and is an absolute joy to drive.

Problems David has found include: traditional sticky power windows go up and down but not very efficiently. I have the recommended regulator booster kit ready to install.
In spite of the restoration in 2016, there has developed a bit of small bubbling on the lower right from wing. I am going to have it looked at but it has been taken into account with the price.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check. This highlighted some finance, however we believe it is due to the short VIN number so it is not the car that has finance, we have contacted HPI for clarification. David has also told us he does not have any outstanding finance on the car.
