Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The 50th anniversary edition of one of Great Britain's most loved 4x4s.

Launched in 1994, 24 years after the previous model was released and came just after the takeover from BMW, who had nothing to do with the development of the P38, but they took a keen interest in it. The next-generation Range Rover offered more equipment and luxurious trim and was there to put their mark at the top of the SUV market.

No longer just a 4x4, it was Wolfgang Reitzle, the man in charge of Land Rover, that saw the potential in making the expensive luxury SUV, with various bespoke features such as a full leather interior, different wood trim options and, for the first time and quite mind-blowing at the time, TV screens in the headrests connected to a VHS video player. Some fantastic options brought the total price to over £72,000 for a fully loaded Range Rover. Definitely the top of the SUV market!

This example comes from almost two years with our vendor, with a current MOT valid until 04.06.2027.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Mike the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

The 'Atlantis Blue' paintwork is a reminder that you're driving the special 50th anniversary.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are the original five-spoke alloys, which are generally in good condition with minimal signs of age to the faces.

The tyres are a matching set, which all have plenty of tread remaining.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

Walking around the P38, the Range Rover looks to have had an easy life for an off-road vehicle.

The panels align with equal gaps, and there is just the odd blister, mainly noted under the driver’s side mirror.

There are a couple of tiny dings which could be removed by a paintless dent removal specialist.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to review all media files to assess the car’s condition for yourself.

Paint

Being the 50th anniversary, the P38 is finished in the special colour of 'Atlantis Blue', a stunning colour which comes alive in the sunlight. The paintwork is in very good condition with just the odd age-related marks in a couple of places, which have been touched in.

The images are taken from a range of angles to show the car as you would see it in person, so please take the time to fully assess the high-resolution photos and videos before forming your own opinion of the paintwork.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in good condition, with no apparent scratches noted.

The window seals also appear to be in good order with minimal signs of age.

The headlights are free from any chips or cracks, as are the rear lights. The Range Rover also comes with front and rear light guards, which are in good order.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

Luxury leather and walnut are typical of any special edition Range Rover and never disappoint.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in 'Parchment' coloured leather, the front electric seats are working correctly, and the leather is in good condition with just a small amount of age-related creasing.

The rear seat is in good condition; the rear passengers have the luxury of two drop-down walnut trays, which are in excellent condition, and also a VHS video player and built-in screens in the headrests. All four door cards also appear in good order, with no damage.

Throughout the Range Rover, the carpets are clean and tidy.

Inside the boot, the spare wheel has been replaced to make way for the LPG gas tank.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in great condition with no real signs of age or damage to the plastics or walnut trim.

The instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows that the Range Rover has covered ~134,583 miles, but as mentioned later, there is an invoice for a replacement short engine being fitted in 2007.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original leather and walnut is in good condition with just a small amount of age-related wear.

The gear knob is in good condition with minimal wear.

Mechanics

The HSE V8 is a fantastic powerhouse and perfect for the Range Rover on or off-road.

Engine and Gearbox

The V8 fires up without hesitation and sounds fantastic, with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay. The 4x4 has been fitted with an LPG conversion, but this is something that Mike has never used in his ownership. Looking through the paperwork, the engine received a new short engine in 2007.

The automatic gearbox makes gear changes effortless as the V8 pulls strongly through the range.

Suspension and Brakes

Bringing a smooth ride to the Range Rover is the air suspension. One of the airbags was replaced shortly before Mike took ownership, but since then, he has had the other three replaced, ensuring the 4x4 sits nice and level.

The brakes are said to be in good order; they bring the Range Rover to a stop in a straight line, with no issues reported.

The Drive

Who said driving an off-road 4x4 had to be harsh, bumpy and difficult?

The Range Rover 50th Anniversary takes luxury 4x4s to a new level. Its smooth 4.6-litre V8 delivers a relaxed, refined surge of power, while the electronic air suspension glides over broken roads with remarkable composure. making long journeys feel almost effortless, yet it will still hold its own when taken off-road. It’s certainly easy to see why the Range Rover has long been regarded as one of the world's finest luxury off-roaders.

Electrics and Other

Inside the Range Rover, the switchgear looks to be in good condition and is reported to be working correctly. The windows and sunroof all operate as you would expect; the only thing we did spot was that the air conditioning doesn’t blow cold; it could need a re-gas, but this hasn’t been investigated.

Mike has also had the BECM module refurbished; it is a common unit to fail and controls many of the vehicle's electronics.

There's also a spare wheel and tyre matching the main wheels.

History and Paperwork

Plenty of invoices show the Range Rover has been well cared for over the years.

Part of the reason Mike purchased the Range Rover was the amount of paperwork, composing a nice history file for the desirable model. He has since added to the paperwork with the new control module and also the replacement airbags. In total, he has spent around ~£3,000 over the past two years rectifying small niggles, it comes with a current MOT valid until 04.06.2027.

Possibly the ultimate choice for any P38 enthusiast, the Vogue 50 is the desirable model to own, with the superb colour choice and a full leather/walnut interior. With so few survivors, this car could also have future investment potential if kept in the same condition.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, as well as a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional HPI check that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident or has any outstanding finance. Please note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We’ve summarised our own view of the car based on information provided by the seller; however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video each car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your home. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are also welcomed on all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a suitable time; we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming. If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car, just like at a traditional auction house.
