Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

A desirable low number produced hand-built British classic.

With just ~258 units produced between 1978 and 1979, it’s safe to say the TVR 3000 S is not only the first true production convertible to come from Blackpool-based TVR but also one of the most early desirable models to own.

Based on the final evolution of the M-Series, the 3000 S convertible replaced the 3000 M coupe and features a lightweight fibreglass body mounted to a tubular backbone chassis with a front-engined Ford Essex 3.0-litre V6 powerhouse which produces approximately ~140bhp and around 170lb-ft of torque, driven through a four-speed manual gearbox straight to the rear wheels.

Coming to market from just over ~5.5 years with our vendor, the 3000 S features a lightweight construction with a V6 engine, laid-back, charming British character that is massively appealing to any classic car enthusiast.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Miguel the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

The sleek lines of the TVR create a stunning classic which looks fantastic and doesn’t fail to turn heads.

Wheels and Tyres

The original alloy wheels present well. There is a small amount of tarnishing to the aluminium, but this could easily be refinished with some elbow grease.

The tyres are a matching set of Nexen SB-802, which have a good amount of tread remaining.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

Created from fibreglass, the bodywork is in very good condition, panel gaps are visually equal and matching, and no damage was spotted to the fibreglass.

We've highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in bright Silver metallic, the TVR was repainted in 2010. The paintwork presents well all over. There are a couple of light marks, but nothing excessive, e.g. a small 1” scratch noted on the passenger side near the roof, which was caused when taking the roof off.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen in the TVR is in good condition, as is the seal. The removable side windows have some light age-related scratches due to them being plastic. The rear plastic window has discoloured but is damage-free.

The fabric roof is in good order and can either be dropped down or fully removed in just a couple of minutes. There is also a tonneau cover which can be fitted when the roof is fully removed.

The lights to the front and rear are in good condition, with no splits or cracks to the lenses.

Interior

A tan leather interior gives a perfect period look to the TVR.

Seats and Carpets

The original seats have been retrimmed in tan leather, which are in excellent condition.

The original carpets are fitted that show signs of age to them.

Inside the boot, there is a fire extinguisher and jack present, along with some custom-made wood pieces that help hold the tonneau cover nice and tight.

Dashboard

The dashboard is trimmed in tan material and presents well.

All of the instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows ~97,458 miles at the time of our visit, since then Miguel has taken the 3000 S for an MOT and the current mileage is ~97,492.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An original three-spoke leather steering wheel is fitted. This has a small amount of patina in keeping with the age of the TVR.

The gear knob is in good order.

A small split was noted to the base of the gear gaiter, but this isn’t really noticeable as it’s at the bottom.

Mechanics

The 3.0-litre V6 is a fantastic choice for the lightweight TVR.

Engine and Gearbox

The TVR fires up nicely and runs with no issues reported by Miguel.

During Miguel’s ownership, he has had a top end engine rebuild and also added an electric cooling fan and high-flow radiator to help keep the V8 cool, as these are renowned to run quite hot.

Also fitted is an electronic ignition system, an electric fuel pump, and a stainless steel exhaust system which runs from the manifolds back.

A four-speed gearbox is fitted to the TVR; the change is precise and the car pulls strongly through each gear.

Suspension and Brakes

Out in the TVR, the ride is firm without being harsh, exactly how you would expect a classic sports car to be, and there were no knocks or bangs heard coming from the suspension.

The front brakes have been upgraded to vented discs and four-pot calipers, giving adequate stopping power to the 70s classic.

The Drive

Driving the 1978 TVR 3000 S convertible is a raw, engaging experience that feels very mechanical by modern standards. The torquey V6 delivers strong low-end pull, while the light weight and direct steering make the car feel quick and alive on twisty roads.

Senses are enhanced even more with the roof off, you’re immersed with engine noise, wind, and road feedback, giving the 3000 S a thrilling, old-school sports-car character that rewards confident, attentive driving.

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear appears to be in good condition, with minimal signs of age.

The car also has the original Pioneer radio cassette head unit in place.

History and Paperwork

The TVR’s comprehensive history file dates back several years.

A folder packed with invoices for various parts purchased and work carried out over the years. There are also several previous MOT certificates showing little but regular use - the 3000 S is MOT and road tax exempt, but Miguel has had a new MOT carried out which is valid until 10.03.2027.

Please note the registration number PXD 938 is not included in the auction but could be negotiated if the lucky winner would like to retain the registration.

Out of just ~258 units produced, this is believed to be one of just ~50 remaining 3000 S left on the road.

If you fancy becoming an owner of a hand-built British classic, then what better choice of car is there than this very low number produced TVR 3000 S.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back, and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions, no matter how small, please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction.
